South Shore Skin Center and Spa Providers to Conduct Free Skin Cancer Screening in Plymouth

May 9, 2012 //  by admin

May is National Melanoma/Skin Cancer Awareness Month and three dermatologists and a physician assistant from South Shore Skin Center and Spa will be on site at the free Skin Cancer Screening Clinic on Thursday, May 17, 2012 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Jordan Hospital Club Cancer Center, 275 Sandwich Street in Plymouth.

Ramzi W. Saad M.D., Barry M. Austin, M.D. and Navid Bouzari, M.D., Board Certified Dermatologists along with Vanessa Rando, PA, will conduct skin cancer screenings, which includes an assessment of sun spots and moles. They will also provide patients with sun safety and melanoma prevention tips.

This free screening is supported by the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Cancer Society. It is open to the public. Call to register (508) 732-4940.

Last May, South Shore Skin Center and Spa dermatologists spotted several potential cases of melanoma during their free Skin Cancer Screening Clinic held at their Plymouth practice. That event was a collaboration of Jordan Hospital Club Cancer Center and South Shore Skin Center and Spa and supported by the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Cancer Society.

According to Richard F. Eisen, M.D. Board Certified Dermatologist and Founding Physician/Director of South Shore Skin Center and Spa, “Melanoma is rising rapidly in New England and in particular in the South Shore area. At last year’s screening, among the 100 who attended, we diagnosed one severe case of melanoma and three potential new melanoma cases which were confirmed after biopsy.”

Recent data has shown that melanoma is the number one cancer in young, white American women. South Shore Skin Center and Spa’s physicians remind adults and children to follow these important measures in the prevention of skin cancer:

Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
Avoid sunlamps and tanning beds.
Use ample amounts of sunscreen or sunblock with an SPF of 30 or higher every day, even if it is cloudy.
Wear protective clothing and large framed or wrap-around sunglasses to protect the eye area.
Have your skin checked by a dermatologist regularly.
Note any moles or other spots on the skin that have changed. Have them checked by a physician as soon as possible.

South Shore Skin Center and Spa’s Recent Skin Cancer Screening Clinic Reveals Potential New Cases of Melanoma

July 12, 2011 //  by admin

During National Melanoma/Skin Cancer Awareness Month (May), the dermatologists at South Shore Skin Center and Spa spotted several potential cases of melanoma during their free Skin Cancer Screening clinic held at their Plymouth practice.

According to Dr. Richard F. Eisen, Board Certified Dermatologist and Founding Physician/Director of South Shore Skin Center, who took part in the screenings that evening, “Melanoma is rising rapidly in New England and in particular in the South Shore area. At our recent screening, we diagnosed one severe case of melanoma and three potential new melanoma cases which may be confirmed cases after biopsy.”

100 people from the South Shore and Plymouth areas attended the free screening evening. The event was a collaboration between Jordan Hospital Club Cancer Center and South Shore Skin Center and Spa and supported by the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Cancer Society.

Many who attended had fair skin and/or had never had their skin checked before.

South Shore Skin Center and Spa providers who were screening patients along with Dr. Eisen included Dr. Ramzi W. Saad (partner at South Shore Skin Center and organizer of the annual screening event), Dr. Emily P. Tierney, Dr. Barry M. Austin, Dr. William W. Stocker, Jessica L. Bahros PA-C, Elizabeth J. McLeish PA-C and Vanessa H. Pollard PA-C. Maryellen Maguire-Eisen, RN, MSN, Executive Director of the Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation was also on hand with the Glow Vista Skin Analyzer taking high definition profile photos which showed attendees the extent of their skin’s UV damage.

“New England has the highest concentration of melanoma cases in the United States. It is the most common cancer in young white women ages 25-29 and second only to breast cancer in women ages 30-34. This is the first time we have seen such a significant number of cases at a screening of 100 people. It is an indication of just how common and serious skin cancers are. It cannot be stressed enough – the way to minimize melanoma mortality is to protect the skin from UVA and UVB rays, to carefully perform monthly self-skin examinations and to obtain a skin cancer screening annually,” noted Dr. Saad.

South Shore Skin Center and Spa tips for preventing skin cancer:
Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
Avoid sunlamps and tanning beds.
Use ample amounts of sunscreen with a minimum SPF 30 every day, even if it is cloudy.
Wear protective clothing and large framed or wrap-around sunglasses to protect the eye area.
Have your skin checked by a dermatologist regularly.
Note any moles or other spots on the skin that have changed. Have them checked by a physician as soon as possible.

South Shore Skin Center & Spa Dermatologists Weigh in on New Melanoma Drug

April 7, 2011 //  by admin

Last week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared the first drug to prolong survival of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. The physicians at South Shore Skin Center and Spa, one of the most progressive practices for medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology in Massachusetts, weigh in on what it means to patients with melanoma.

“The breakthrough cancer medication from Bristol-Myers Squibb is Yervoy and it is specifically for patients with late-stage or metastatic melanoma. This is an exciting new weapon in the fight against skin cancer. We have two drugs out there that are used in the treatment of stage 3 and stage 4 melanoma – Interferon (which was approved a decade ago) and Dacarbazine. Yervoy is the first medication shown to prolong survival,” explained Dr. Ramzi Saad, M.D., dermatologist at South Shore Skin Center and Spa.

He continued, “ Yervoy is going to be a promising option for many. It prolongs life by six and a half months or more. The big issue is the significant side effect profile. But, Yervoy will undergo further rigorous testing to define it’s optimal use on melanoma patients.”

Over the past two years, South Shore Skin Center and Spa has seen a significant increase in the number of South Shore and Cape Cod patients at their practice being diagnosed with stage 1 and stage 2 melanoma. The doctors at South Shore Skin Center and Spa believe that one of the potential directions that may be taken with Yervoy is that it could be given to patients in the earlier stages (stage 1 or stage 2 melanoma) for protective results as well as for greater results in prolonging survival.

According to South Shore Skin Center and Spa’s dermatologists, early detection is imperative in the prevention and treatment of melanoma. If undetected and untreated, melanoma can quickly spread to the major organs and lymph nodes.

“Skin cancer is primarily caused by prolonged exposure to Ultraviolet A (UVA) and Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays from the sun or from tanning booths. UVA and UVB rays are present in tanning booths as well as on cloudy days and exposed skin is left vulnerable without sunblock or sunscreen. We’re all exposed to these rays every day, each time we go outdoors and the repeated exposure builds over time,” noted Dr. Richard Eisen, M.D. Dermatologist at South Shore Skin Center and Spa.

Protecting Against Skin Cancer

South Shore Skin Center’s physicians remind adults and children to follow these important measures in the prevention of skin cancer:

Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.

Avoid sunlamps and tanning beds.

Use ample amounts of sunscreen or sunblock with an SPF of 30 or higher every day, even if it is cloudy.

Wear protective clothing and large framed or wrap-around sunglasses to protect the eye area.

Have your skin checked by a dermatologist regularly.

Note any moles or other spots on the skin that have changed. Have them checked by physician as soon as possible.

For concerns about the skin, contact South Shore Skin Center’s Cohasset (781) 383-3340 or Plymouth dermatology office (508) 747-0711.
