Emerson Bearing Announces Special Bearings for Semiconductor & Medical Equipment Industries

October 31, 2018 //  by admin

Severe environments call for special bearings. Emerson Bearing Boston, a bearing company catering to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) markets around the world, offers special bearings for corrosive and electrically charged environments in the semiconductor and medical equipment industries.

Equipment in both the semiconductor and medical industries are subject to stringent cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization procedures which often involve the use of harsh, corrosive chemicals. In these highly corrosive environments, specialized corrosion-resistant bearings are required to ensure proper functioning. Those working on equipment in the semiconductor and medical industries should consider bearings made out of materials such as titanium or AISI 304, AISI 440, or AISI 630 stainless steel.

Electrical current can be incredibly damaging to metal components. For bearings, it can cause a wide range of problems, including fluting in the races, pitting of the ball bearings, and degradation of lubrication. Medical equipment such as magnetic resonance imagers (MRIs), for instance, all involve high-stress environments with a great deal of electrical activity.

Ceramic bearings, as well as ceramic insulated metal bearings, are ideal for highly electrically charged applications. Ceramic materials, with a few rare exceptions, are very poor conductors of electricity; although they can accept large voltages, they are able to dissipate that electricity extremely effectively. The passing electricity causes little to no degradation.

“For highly corrosive environments, standard bearings simply fall short. Corrosion-resistant bearings are required to ensure proper functioning,” explained Steve Katz, president of Emerson Bearing. “In electrically charged environments, utilizing bearings that are poor conductors of electricity is imperative.”

With a sourcing network that spans the globe, Emerson Bearing Boston caters to clients in the semiconductor and medical equipment industries with a wide selection of severe-environment bearings that include: Ball and roller bearings from GMN, KOYO, and others; Cam followers and yoke rollers from Carter, IKO, and others; Rod ends from Durbal and FK; Oil seals from Garlock, Dichtomatik, and Timkens; Mounted units from AMI, IPTCI, and others; Roller chains from Daido, Hitachi, and Drives; and Bushings from IGUS and Oilite.

Katz continued, “When choosing the right type of bearing material for your specific application, the conditions must be kept in mind. Our team of bearing experts can assist in the right bearing selection and equip customers with the knowledge needed to avoid costly pitfalls and downtime.”

Emerson Bearing Boston, a bearing company catering to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) markets around the world, announces an expanded line of Oil Seals, specifically, Bearing Isolators.

Emerson Bearing’s expanded line includes Garlock brand isolator-style oil seals, which areavailable in metal and non-metal materials, feature a single-piece design, and do not place excessive stress on shafts. Isolator-style oil seals provide an ideal solution for severe applicationsand are easier to install than inch measurement oil seals and metric oil seals.

Steve Katz, president of Emerson Bearing explained, “Essentially, oil seals close the spaces between stationary and moving parts in order to reduce the risk of lubricant release. They are used in various manufacturing applications, including those found in automotive manufacturing, engine manufacturing, off-highway jobs, oil refineries, and power transmission.”

Oil seals are critical components that help keep equipment from breaking down, and allow production equipment to better withstand severe environments. Oil seals help ensure consistent, reliable operation without the risk of damage from leaks.

Isolator-style oil seals provide outstanding protection, including high abrasion resistance as well as excellent chemical temperature resistance. For example, Isolators may be used to provide electric motor bearings with an extra layer of protection against contaminants.

Katz continued, “With the wide range of oil seals available on the market, our bearing team can provide the expert guidance needed when searching for the ideal oil seal. No matter how unusual or complex the application, Emerson Bearing will find a solution for the customer’s exact needs.”

Emerson Bearing Boston Rolls Out Extra Precision Bearings and Shares Tips for Optimal Performance

March 29, 2018 //  by admin

Some industrial jobs require precision beyond that provided by standard bearings. Emerson Bearing Boston, a bearing company catering to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) markets around the world, rolls out Extra Precision Bearings and shares tips to ensure their peak performance.

Extra precision bearings allow for extra fine tolerance and precision, and are ideal for applications with stringent requirements for speed (RPM) and guidance accuracy. Emerson Bearing Boston offers extra precision bearings from several top brands, including Barden, GMN, Nachi, NTN, and NSK.

There are two primary types of extra precision bearings: deep groove bearings and angular contact bearings. They are offered in many sizes, including miniature precision bearings, and are available with various cage types. Extremely versatile and among the most widely used types of bearings, deep groove bearings include full shoulders on each side of the inner and outer ring raceways, allowing for the easy addition of seals or shields. These bearings can handle radial loads, thrust loads, or a combination of both.

Angular contact bearings have one complete ring shoulder; the other ring shoulder is partially or completely removed. This allows them to have a larger ball, which offers greater load capacity and speed capability. Various cage designs are also available to meet specific high-speed requirements. Contact bearings can support thrust loads or a combination of thrust and radial loads. When implemented back-to-back or face-to-face, they can support thrust loads in both directions. Angular contact bearings are available in two types: separable or non-separable. These classifications denote whether the outer ring assembly can be removed from the inner ring. Separable angular contact bearings are especially useful when installing in a blind hole and in applications requiring press fits.

Closures and Cages for Extra Precision Bearings

Bearing closures serve to protect the bearings from internal damage caused by handling. Most bearing assemblies make use of bearing cages to create and maintain uniform ball spacing, reduce torque, and cut down on heat buildup. Extra precision bearings use cages made from stainless steel, bronze, or phenolic as these materials offer higher speeds and better loading capabilities.

“It’s important to understand the exact needs of the application in order to make a proper selection between standard bearings and extra precision bearings,” explained Steve Katz, Emerson Bearing Boston president.

Factors to Consider for Peak Performance

Two of the most important key factors to consider when selecting bearings are preloading and radial internal clearance. These elements should be closely examined to ensure bearings are able to operate efficiently in favorable conditions. The bearings must have the right amount of radial internal clearance, which is the total maximum movement possible for the inner ring in relation to the outer ring. Preloading, on the other hand, involves the removal of internal clearance in a bearing.

Shaft and housing fits are also important factors to keep in mind when employing extra precision bearings. It should also be determined whether extra precision bearings will perform better with grease or oil lubrication.

Katz continued, “It’s imperative to make sure the systems are set up for success before putting extra precision bearings into play. Our team of experts can assist in the right bearing selection for its specific application and requirements in order to equip customers with the knowledge needed to avoid costly pitfalls and downtime.”

Looking for Maintenance-free Bearing Performance? Emerson Bearing Boston Announces Superior Solution for Food Grade Applications

January 1, 2018 //  by admin

Emerson Bearing Boston, a bearing company catering to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) markets around the world, has announced an ideal bearing solution for dairy, meat and seafood processing companies as well as bottling/canning and cosmetic and pharmaceutical production companies.

Emerson Bearing Boston offers stainless steel bearings, solid lube, and seals and slingers that can be used to create unique components that deliver high performance and a long life span while resisting bearing contamination. The company now carries NTN Sentinel Series stainless steel bearings, which are specifically designed for use in food-grade settings, but are also well suited to corrosive environments thanks to their unique seal and slinger design. These bearings can be used in many sectors that involve direct or incidental contact with food. Sentinel bearings are especially well suited to blending, stirring, separating, cooking, drying, packaging, and wrapping applications within these industries.

Difficult-to-maintain or hard-to-access locations can also benefit from these bearings, since they do not require regular maintenance or replacement after initial installation.

Food Grade Lubrication
H1 food-safe solid lube can be used in temperatures ranging from 14°F to 212°F, allowing for use in many food applications. Since it does not come into contact with the high-pressure washdowns that must be done regularly to eliminate contaminants, the H1 solid lube resists these washdowns easily, remaining intact and effective. Plus, the seal and slinger design removes the risk of lubricant leakage that would attract dust and dirt around the bearing.

“In sensitive food-grade applications and corrosive environments, selecting the proper bearings, along with the right lubrication, is critical for ensuring optimal system longevity and reliability,” explained Steve Katz, president. “In these harsh settings, bearings must provide high performance and durability without the need for frequent maintenance or replacement.”

For more information about Emerson Bearing Boston’s solutions for food grade applications, contact Lee Holt, Marketing Specialist, at 866.995.8763 or visit https://www.emersonbearing.com/industries/packagingfood-processing/.
