DirectBuy

DirectBuy offers new levels, terms of membership to reach more families…30-day free membership among the Company’s newest offerings

August 25, 2009 //  by admin

MERRILLVILLE, IN…

By providing direct access to hundreds of brand-name manufacturers, DirectBuy has enabled its members to save thousands upon thousands of dollars. In this economy, those savings become even more important. That’s why the company recently introduced several new membership plans to accommodate a wider range of needs and budgets, so that even more families can experience the benefits of belonging to DirectBuy.

“The very nature of our concept is powerful, in any economy,” said DirectBuy Executive Vice President Bart Fesperman. “What we were seeing was our members faring much better than most families because of their memberships with DirectBuy and the savings they were experiencing. Even with the economy being slow, our members are still able to buy the things they need for their home. Now we hope to be able to share this security with even more families.”

That’s why DirectBuy recently introduced a variety of new membership plans to accommodate consumers’ varying needs and budgets – and response has been overwhelmingly positive.

The first new avenue for a family to experience membership is via DirectBuy’s free 30-day membership program. The free membership gives families an opportunity to spend up to $1,000 at DirectBuy over the course of 30 days – giving them the chance to try DirectBuy firsthand before selecting a longer-term membership.

Families can now also take advantage of two additional tiers of membership, based on their specific needs. In addition to DirectBuy’s standard Gold membership, guests may also select Silver, which gives them access to a select number of manufacturers, or Platinum membership, which includes extra perks such as the ability to shop from the convenience of your home with the help of a Concierge Services Agent, seven days a week.

Finally, DirectBuy recently unveiled new varying terms of membership, from as short as three months up to 10 years. This new flexibility means homeowners can, for the first time, customize DirectBuy membership to fit their specific needs.

“When guests come in to our club, they aren’t deciding any more if DirectBuy membership is right for them,” says DirectBuy of Palm Beaches Franchise Owner Stephen Levin. “Instead, guests are now choosing which membership plan best suits their needs.”

DirectBuy clubs offer members the opportunity to enjoy enormous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, carpeting and flooring, entertainment and outdoor products, and accessories by purchasing from manufacturers and their authorized suppliers at direct insider prices. In addition, DirectBuy clubs boast a team of designers to help members with their purchases, as well as provide access to a roster of hand-selected contractors to help expedite members’ projects.

Consumers interested in becoming members may obtain a Visitor’s Pass to attend an Open House by visiting www.directbuy.com.

Breaking the Digital Barrier

August 13, 2009 //  by admin

Merrillville, IN, August 13, 2009 – With more than 20 million children still without home computer access in the United States, DirectBuy’s corporate headquarters continues to help break the digital barrier.

During the month of July, the DirectBuy corporate campus donated CPUs, monitors, keyboards, printers and funds to the Boys and Girls Club of Northwest Indiana.

The contributions will help facilitate a computer-refurbishing program that is tentatively set to launch during the upcoming school year, providing the receipt of additional funding from a pass through grant from the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Studies show that children with home access to computers are six to eight percent more likely to graduate from high school than those without. “The digital divide continues to create a barrier for young adults entering the work force,” said DirectBuy’s Network Administrator Ken Snedecor. “Information technology is a new prerequisite for success in the labor market and children with little to no exposure will suffer the consequences.”

The refurbishing program will educate children on the inner-workings of a computer. The program will also include instructional activities such as adding additional memory and loading new software programs.

“The best part about the new program is that once the PCs are rebuilt, the children get to take them home for keeps,” said Alison Martin, Vice President of Development and Marketing. “We are thankful for DirectBuy’s continued support of the Boys & Girls Clubs and their willingness to give us such equipment that we can use if to launch the program once funding is received.”

This type of generosity is fairly standard for the DirectBuy corporate office. Throughout the last two years, the corporate campus donated more than 100 CPUs and monitors to Net Literacy, a youth empowered nonprofit organization headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. The donation impacted thousands of individuals in and around the midwest.

DirectBuy also contributes funds to the Boys & Girls Club of Northwest Indiana through quarterly employee casual days, where employees make a minimum donation of $2 to support the charity and dress in jeans for one workday. So far this year, DirectBuy collected and donated more than $2,700 from just two casual days.

Employees like Field Sales Representative Tanja Zoellner look forward to each donation. “I’m really happy that we are given an outlet to donate each quarter,” said Zoellner. “Though individually we might not be able to make a huge difference, collectively we are very powerful. I look forward to donating again!”

High Five! DirectBuy of Ottawa owners celebrate five-year milestone.

August 6, 2009 //  by admin

GLOUCESTER, ONTARIO…

Five years ago, when Frank Andrée and Chantal Lapalme purchased the DirectBuy of Ottawa club, they had a mission: to show consumers in the greater Ottawa area a brand new way to save on home improvement projects, home furnishings and accessories. After just a few short years, Andrée and Lapalme led the Ottawa club to top honors for sales, service and merchandise volume.

In late 2008, Lise and Regis Girard joined the ownership team and continued the winning tradition, ranking number two in Merchandise Sales for 2009 among Canadian DirectBuys—including a top ranking for merchandise sales among Canadian clubs for the month of May.  Additionally, Ottawa has ranked in the top 5 for all clubs for membership sales in each of the past 6 months.

“The growth we’ve experienced since we opened our doors five years ago is a little hard to fathom. Not only have we grown in terms of the number of our members, but also in the number of manufacturers who want to sell their products through DirectBuy,” said Regis Girard, co-owner of DirectBuy of Ottawa. “In finishing first in merchandise sales for May, I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate our anniversary. Frankly, I’m even more excited about the next five years.”

As the leading members-only home improvement and home furnishings club, DirectBuy of Ottawa offers direct insider pricing on products ranging from light fixtures to televisions to kitchen cabinets, all from more than 500 manufacturers and their authorized suppliers. DirectBuy also offers design services to its members, as well as a listing of local contractors who offer installation services to DirectBuy members, many times at a discounted rate.

“Our five years in business have not only given us the opportunity to help families create the home of their dreams, but to also establish ourselves as part of the local business community and as a contributor to local charities,” said Girard. “We look forward to further cultivating those relationships with our customers and the community as we build toward even bigger and better things in the years to come.”

DirectBuy of Ottawa has helped consumers enjoy enormous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products, and accessories, by providing an avenue to purchase directly from the manufacturer. Conveniently located at 1392 Cyrville, Road in Gloucester, Ontario, DirectBuy offers consumers a comfortable, country-club setting, where they finally have the financial control of buying direct.

DirectBuy promotes achievement through technology.

June 2, 2009 //  by admin

MERRILLVILLE, IN…

DirectBuy, the home improvement and furnishings club with direct insider prices, recently donated computer equipment to PATINS (Promoting Achievement through Technology and INstruction for all Students) Project. DirectBuy’s donation will help provide computer access to Indiana K-12 public students who are disabled and/or disadvantaged.

“We’re thankful that DirectBuy provided us with much needed computer equipment,” says Walt Daigle, Manager of the Refurbished Computer Program for PATINS Project. “DirectBuy’s contribution will eventually help hundreds of students in underprivileged schools.”

This type of generosity is fairly standard for DirectBuy Corporate. Last year, the corporate campus donated more than 100 CPU’s and monitors to Net Literacy, a youth empowered nonprofit organization headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. The donation impacted thousands of individuals in and around the Midwest. Although this year’s donation wasn’t as sizeable, the effects of the contribution will be felt across the state of Indiana.

“We hope our donation will help impact the lives of students for years to come,” said Senior Director of MIS Donna Vaughan. “Every student should have access to computer technology. We are thrilled that our computer equipment will provide this opportunity to disadvantaged and disabled children.”

What you don’t know about retail markups does cost you…

May 22, 2009 //  by admin

MERRILLVILLE, IN …

These tough economic times have families and homeowners reevaluating budgets and looking for ways to reduce spending. One area a family’s internal audit might not take into consideration is how much more they spend by purchasing items they need at retail prices.

According to information from the 2007 U.S. Census, consumer retail markups range from 46.6 percent at furniture and home furnishing stores to 38 percent at department stores, and from 33.5 percent at building supplies and materials stores to 28 percent at electronics and computer software stores.

“When it comes to retail markups, many consumers don’t even realize what they are spending. And if they do, they often feel helpless. They don’t know there are alternative options to retail stores, so they opt to spend less rather than spend more wisely,” said Sara Shragal, of DirectBuy, the leading home improvement and furnishings club with direct insider prices. “You can’t stop shopping altogether. If you’re a homeowner, particularly if you purchased your home in the past few years, it’s difficult to spend less because you run the risk of your home running into disrepair and lowering the property value.”

In fact, according to the National Association of Home Builders website, www.homeeconomics.com, families spend $12,332 during the first year after buying a home built in 2004 or later; and $8,927 if the home was built before 2004. For a non-moving owner, that figure was $4,420.

Even further evidence that homeowners are still investing in their properties comes from the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies. In a recent report, the Joint Center projected that U.S. homeowners will spend $134.1 billion on home improvements in the third quarter 2009 and $137.2 billion in the fourth quarter 2009.

So, if consumers are still going to spend on home improvement, how do they escape costly retail markups?

“At our clubs across the U.S. and Canada, we enable our members to buy directly from the manufacturers. That eliminates the markup and gives them optimal value for their dollar,” said Shragal. “That’s why member sales are up at many of our clubs because, even in this difficult economy, people know they have to reinvest in their homes and want to get the maximum bang for their buck.”

DirectBuy clubs offer members the opportunity to save on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products and accessories. In addition, DirectBuy clubs boast teams of specialists and access to designers to help members with their purchases, as well as exclusive access to a roster of hand-selected contractors to expedite those projects.

Consumers interested in becoming members may obtain a Visitor’s Pass to attend an Open House by visiting www.directbuy.com.

From One Club to Another-DirectBuy Supports Boys & Girls Clubs…Donning Denim Makes a Difference for Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana

May 19, 2009 //  by admin

DirectBuy's Patti Titus with children from the Merrillville Boys & Girls Club
DirectBuy

Merrillville, IN (May 19, 2009) –

Visitors walking in and out of the DirectBuy Corporate Headquarters in Merrillville were a little surprised to see employees so casually dressed on Friday, April 10, 2009. Wearing denim is not acceptable work attire for employees, but what visitors did not know was that DirectBuy employees were donning denim for a great cause. As part of a new corporate giving program, employees were given the opportunity to wear jeans to work in exchange for making a minimum $2 donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana (BGCNWI). As a result, DirectBuy raised $1000 for Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana.

The donation provided by DirectBuy helps Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana to continue offering services to area youth. “Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana is able to provide its programs and services because of the generosity of donors and volunteers, such as the employees of DirectBuy,” says Greg Reinholt, development manager, Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana.

DirectBuy’s Patti Titus, senior director of merchandise services, and Sara Shragal, public relations manager, visited the Boys & Girls Club in Merrillville on April 21, 2009 to present the $1000 check and meet the children and volunteers who will benefit from the donation. During their visit, Titus and Shragal toured the facility and stayed to lend a hand with math worksheets.

At the Boys & Girls Clubs, homework is a top priority, followed by educational learning activities, computer education, physical fitness and games room activities. The Club also teaches classes about leadership, and making good choices.

“The DirectBuy concept really goes hand-in-hand with the values of the Boys & Girls Clubs,” says Titus. “Both programs are focused on helping families achieve a better quality of life.”

Giving back to the community has become a regular activity for DirectBuy clubs across North America. At the corporate office, employees give to the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Foundation each year, but with the new corporate giving program in place, DirectBuy plans on making a donation each quarter of the year.

For the employees at DirectBuy, like merchandise specialist, Pattie Jakubielski, the new program is a welcome addition. “It was definitely fun to see co-workers wearing their favorite pair of jeans,” said Jakubielski. “But the best part is that the donations are helping local youth.”

Curb appeal still holds appeal for homeowners…DirectBuy helps consumers with home improvement projects that deliver the most ROI.

May 12, 2009 //  by admin

MERRILLVILLE, IN …

One of the central motivations of taking on a large remodel or home improvement project is to increase the resale value of your home. Yet in a soft real estate market, is that still the case? If so, which home improvement projects actually “pay for themselves” or increase the value of your home the most? DirectBuy, the leading home improvement and furnishings club with direct insider prices, offers some insights into the home improvement projects that deliver the most return on investment (ROI).

“You’d think because of the soft real estate market that the likelihood of homeowners taking on remodels would go down. It’s actually quite the opposite. According to the Spring 2009 RemodelorMove Remodeling Sentiment Report, a semi-annual survey of 5,000 U.S homeowners,68 percent of homeowners will remodel in 2009,” said Sara Shragal, of DirectBuy.

So which home improvements projects have the best chance of recouping the homeowner’s investment? According to Remodeling magazine’s 2008 report, the home improvement projects you’re most likely to recover construction costs in a resale are:

●        Minor kitchen remodel (e.g. new cabinets) – 79.5% cost recouped

●        Major kitchen remodel – 76% recouped

●        Deck addition (wood)– 81.8% cost recouped

●        Bathroom remodel – 78.3% cost recouped

●        Siding replacement (vinyl) – 80.7% cost recouped

●        Window replacement (vinyl) – 79.5% cost recouped

●        Attic to bedroom remodel – 73.8% cost recouped

These numbers reflect a national average, with some home improvement projects coming in higher or lower in different parts of the country (e.g. in Chicago, siding replacement will recoup more than the national average; most likely the higher value of siding in a colder climate).

“What’s interesting about this report is even though home prices have fallen about seven percent nationally, the decline in value of remodeling projects has been under four percent. So, besides getting to enjoy the benefits of your remodel project while you’re living in your home, you are still getting good value comparatively,” said Shragal.

By enabling its members to buy directly from manufacturers at wholesale prices, DirectBuy gives consumers an even greater chance to recoup construction costs at the time of sale. Taking it one step further, DirectBuy also provides members with connections to contractors providing installation services, generally at a discounted rate between five and 20 percent, to improve even further the likelihood of recovering construction costs.

Let the sun shine in… but not too much. Window treatments preserve furnishings and maximize cooling efforts.

April 23, 2009 //  by admin

OTTAWA, ON…

After a long winter, your natural instinct is to open up your windows and let the warm sunshine soak into every nook and cranny of your home. Yet before you get too crazy opening up windows and curtains, you should take into account the effect sunshine can have on your furniture and your energy costs.

DirectBuy, the leading home improvement and furnishings club with direct insider prices, offers some tips on giving your windows the treatment to get ready for the warmer spring and summer weather.

“For starters, direct sunlight on your furniture can do more harm than good. Light colors reflect sunlight and dark colors absorb it, so you may want to move some things around in the spring when your shades and blinds are drawn a bit more with the nicer weather,” said Frank Andree, owner of DirectBuy of Ottowa.

While protecting your furniture and rugs from the destructiveness of too much sun is an important consideration in selecting your window treatments, just as important is planning to maximize energy efficiency. Many of the same methods you use in the winter to keep cold air out, you can also use in the summer to keep cool air in.

If installing new double pane windows isn’t in your budget, you can still help halt energy loss (and gain, in the summer) by first caulking, sealing and adding weather stripping to your windows and doors. Then, spend some time researching not just what types of window coverings help block heat from coming in while holding your cool air inside, but also the various window films available for those purposes.

Cellular and honeycomb shades make use of pleated fabrics which can help stop heat from coming into your home. Outdoor window treatments, like shutters and awnings, can also make an impact on your energy bills if fitted properly. Window films can help insulate your windows, preventing heat and cold from affecting your interior temperature, and are a fairly easy project for even the most inexperienced do-it-yourselfer.

And let’s not forget,  aside from functionality, window treatments present some stylish, economical options for sprucing up your living areas without the headache of a major remodel. Some window treatments to consider for both shade and style include:

·                    Wood and faux wood blinds

·                    Roman shades

·                    Plantation shutters

·                    Vinyl blinds and mini blinds – great for high humidity areas (e.g. kitchens, baths)

·                    Curtains or drapes (can be customized to match your existing upholstery)

·                    Cornices, valences, and swags

“By giving your windows an aesthetic and functional makeover in the spring, you can create a nice, new seasonal look and improve your home’s efficiency,” said Andree.
