MARSHFIELD, MA … The Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield located at 37 Proprietors Drive, has announced the addition of a new street hockey rink and synthetic turf field. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on October 18.

Dawn and Mark Warsofsky, Marshfield residents and long-time supporters of the Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield, want to positively impact children and teens in the community by providing outdoor resources for social interaction and physical activity. “Our family is blessed to be able to support The Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield in their mission and watch the impact that our contributions have for so many local children and their families.” A significant donation from the Warsofsky Family Foundation was made for this project.

Construction by R.A.D. Sports of Rockland MA is underway on the 45’ wide by 90’ long street hockey rink and 54,000 sf synthetic turf field.  The rink may be used as an ice-skating rink in the winter and the turf field offers the community year-round opportunities for sports and events.

“The Warsofsky’s are an amazing family and have been very generous to the Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield as well as to other organizations,” said Jim Bunnell, CEO of Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield. “We are extremely grateful for their ongoing support.”

The Warsofsky family is well-known in the hockey world. David Warsofsky has played for a number of teams over the years including the Boston Bruins and he was a member of the 2022 U.S. Olympic Men’s Hockey Team. Ryan Warsofsky is the head coach of the San Jose Sharks.

Warsofsky Family Foundation
Long-standing supporters of the Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield, the Warsofsky’s passion for providing unique out of school opportunities for the children of the South Shore has created a partnership unlike any other in Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield’s history. Summer Camp Warsofsky, the Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield’s new summer camp launched in 2024 provides fun-filled adventures in a wellness driven environment. The summer camp is a traditional camp environment that is welcoming and accessible to all.

Earlier this year, the Warsofsky Family Foundation met the transportation needs of the Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield with the donation of a 77-seat school bus. The Warsofsky Teen Center at the Club was established several years ago.

New Hot Shots scholarship at the Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield

May 13, 2024 //  by admin

Amanda O’Connell

MARSHFIELD, MA… Hot Shots, the popular sports programs for girls and boys ages 2 to 6 years old at the Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield, has announced a new scholarship — the Amanda O’Connell Scholarship.

Created in memory of the beloved Hot Shots coach, the Amanda O’Connell Scholarship provides scholarships to families in financial need who otherwise would not be able to afford to send their child to Hot Shots.

Some of Amanda O’Connell’s happiest memories involved being a Hot Shots coach — squatting on the gym floor, looking into a little four-year-old’s tear-filled eyes, and telling the child that she believed in her. Amanda would then say, “I bet that if we try it again together, you’ll be able to do it!” And, sure enough, the tyke would succeed! Tears would be replaced by squeals of happiness and, more often than not, the child would jump for joy!

Amanda did this kind of empathetic mentoring over and over again with hundreds of little children during her seven-year career as a Hot Shots coach. Amanda knew how important those little moments are in building a child’s self-confidence and self-esteem because when Amanda was a four-year-old Hot Shots camper herself, she received those special votes of confidence from the coaches.

So, when Amanda tragically passed away in the summer of 2023 at the age of just 30, her family couldn’t think of a better way to keep her memory alive than to create a Hot Shots scholarship in her name to help little kids have the Hot Shots experience who might not otherwise be able to afford it.

“Amanda embodied the spirit and mission of Hot Shots, a unique youth development program that uses joyful, fun, silly games with 100 percent parent participation to build a child’s self-esteem, parental bonds, love of reading, and athletic skills,” said Hot Shots founder and director John Wilpers. “Amanda brought sunshine into every room she entered along with a can-do spirit that was infectious. Little girls looked up to her and blossomed with her encouragement.”

“She put smiles on the faces of the Hot Shots campers and encouraged them to not be afraid of trying new things,” said her sister Lindsey O’Connell. “She would want little Hot Shots kids today to have the same uplifting experiences she had as a Hot Shots camper, and learn how to share their light with the world.”

“The Amanda O’Connell scholarship will be a special way of continuing Amanda’s positive impact on little children for years to come,” said Wilpers.

If you have a boy or girl between the ages of 2-6 and would like him or her to have the Hot Shots experience, visit the Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield (bgcmarshfield.org) or email Mr. Wilpers at john@bgcmarshfield.org or text him at 617-688-0137.

Hot Shots Now Open to Boys Ages 2-7. New Creativity Club winter program for young boys and girls begins January 21st.

January 8, 2024 //  by admin

MARSHFIELD, MA… The idea of tots, pre-K, and kindergarten kids learning Irish Step dance, sculpting, drumming, painting and acro-dancing seems far-fetched. But at the Hot Shots Creativity Club this winter, that’s exactly what the 2-7 year-olds will be doing.

The new program at the Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield features instructors from five major South Shore arts organizations: the South Shore Art Center, the South Shore Conservatory, the Pembroke School of Performing Arts, the Dunleavy Boyle Academy of Irish Dance, and the Jesse Stiglich Music School. They are assisted by a team of middle and high school coaches.

Program Now Open to Boys
With the launch of the winter Hot Shots Creativity Club, director John Wilpers said it was finally time to invite boys to join the fun and learning. After almost 30 years and 5,000 girl graduates, Hot Shots is now open to boys ages 2-7.

For years, parents of young boys have been asking for a Hot Shots program for boys. They heard about the program’s dedication to building tots’ and pre-K girls’ self-esteem, athletic skills, love of reading, parental bonds, and public speaking skills, and they wanted it for their sons.

All the classes feature 100 percent parent participation, a weekly story time, five books to take home every Sunday, and public speaking (kids introducing themselves) — all aimed at learning, having fun, and building each child’s parental bonds, love of reading, and self-esteem.

The Creativity Club will run for 10 Sundays, from January 21 through March 24, 2024 (including both weekends of the February vacation week) at the Boys & Girls Club at 37 Proprietors Drive in Marshfield.

Each Sunday has a theme:

Jan. 21: Polar bear sculpting
Jan. 28: Acro-Dance
Feb. 4: Ballet
Feb. 11: Hip-Hop
Feb. 18: Making music with shakers, scarves and snuggle dust
Feb. 25: Painting kitty portraits with rhinestone collars
Mar. 3: Drumming
Mar. 10: Irish Step Dancing
Mar. 17: A kiddy orchestra
Mar. 24: Graduation

There are three sessions each Sunday: 9, 10 and 11 AM. Each session is open to all ages.

All children ages 2-7 from any town on the South Shore may enroll.

Registration is at the Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield website (bgcmarshfield.org).  More information can be obtained by emailing Wilpers at john@bgcmarshfield.org or texting/calling him at 617-688-0137.

MARSHFIELD, MA … Cruising through Briteway’s Haunted Car Wash in Marshfield just prior to Halloween has become a thrilling tradition for many South Shore families. But, what some may not realize is that the frightfully fun event supports a significant number of families in need.

More than 420 cars cruised through the Haunted Car Wash this year, raising over $10,500 in proceeds. Briteway generously matched that amount and then some – donating a total of $21,668 to the Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield in support of their scholarship program which helps families in need.

Scholarships are granted for the Club’s Before School and After School programs which offer homework help, mentoring, guidance, club activities, sports and recreational activities, breakfast and snacks. This year’s Haunted Car Wash theme was a haunted campground known as “Camp Scream” which had an elaborately decorated set based on old fashioned horror films complete with ghouls and other costumed characters approaching the vehicles. The event was held October 27 and 28, 2023 and was sponsored by Tiny & Sons Glass.

Bunnell continued, “Thank you to our sponsors as well as the dozens of volunteers who did a terrific job setting the stage and portraying spooky characters to provide South Shore families with an outstanding experience.”

Registration Now Open for Hot Shots Soccer for Girls.  A youth soccer program using tutus, 100% parent participation, and story times enters 28th season.

September 5, 2023 //  by admin

SQUIRT-GUN SOCCER: One of the many fun games at Hot Shots Soccer for Girls is the squirt gun dribbling drill. Girls dribble, chased by their squirt-gun-toting parents, and then the tables are turned! Here, Marshfield’s Jared Bell has managed to lose the ball while getting soaked by his daughter, Cadence. (John Wilpers photo)

MARSHFIELD, MA… Since 1996, Hot Shots Soccer for girls has stood out from youth sports program anywhere with 100 percent parent participation, story times, books to take home every week, public speaking for tots, and soccer “drills” that use tutus, puppets, parachutes, and squirt guns.

One of the most unusual aspects of Hot Shots is that parents aren’t just taxi drivers who observe from the sidelines, but participate in every activity, putting on tutus, becoming horsies, being butterflies, etc. These fun games build lasting memories and bonds.

The aim of the program is to build girls’ self-esteem, parental bonds, love of reading, athletic skills, and public speaking abilities while having lots of silly fun.

Open to South Shore girls ages 2-7, Hot Shots is conducted in a supportive, non-competitive, fun-filled environment. Since 1996, more than 5,000 girls have graduated.

There is no competition. The only “competition” is within each girl. The coaches challenge each girl weekly to push herself to try something new.

Hot Shots also strives to build a sense of self-esteem and being special. Every session, we ask girls to speak to the 30-40 kids and grown-ups, introducing themselves by telling everyone their favorite things and why they are a special person.

Hot Shots builds girls’ love of reading with a story time every week, and sends every girl home with a bag full of five books to read.

To create a supportive culture, we use strong female role models as coaches, including high school and middle school girls, many of whom are top-level soccer players but many of whom are also dancers, artists, etc. The common denominator is that they all love helping young girls.

Surveys prove the value of the Hot Shots experience. Of the parents surveyed, 98 percent said their girls became more self-confident; 98 percent became more at ease in social settings; 94 percent became more willing to try new things; 92 percent became more independent; and 92 percent became more fond of books and reading.

To join the fun, register at bgcmarshfield.org. The season is 10 Sundays, September 10 – November 12, 2023 at the Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield at 37 Proprietors Drive, Marshfield, MA. Sessions are at 9, 10, and 11 a.m. Registration is open to girls ages 2-7. The fee is $195 (scholarships available). For questions, text/call John Wilpers, 617-688-0137, or email john@bgcmarshfield.org.

For over 100 years Boys & Girls Clubs in Massachusetts have been providing safe and affordable out of school time programs for thousands of children.  When school is out, the Boys & Girls Clubs are there to answer the call and as we head back to a new school year, Clubs will continue to serve the youth of our Commonwealth.  The light on the bridges, is a reflection of the light Clubs bring into our children’s lives every day. The bridge lighting is part of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s Bridge lighting initiative.

The Massachusetts Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs is a group of 40 independent Boys & Girls Club organizations operating throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The Alliance was formed in 2000 for the purpose of seeking and sharing financial and program opportunities to help better serve Massachusetts children and teens.  Through collaboration and cooperation, the Alliance helps to ensure that great futures start right here in the Bay State.
