On the evening of Thursday, August 31, 2023, just in time for the start of a new school year, four major bridges in Massachusetts, the Zakim Bridge and Longfellow Bridge in Boston, the Fore River Bridge in Quincy/Weymouth, and the Burns Bridge in Worcester, will light up blue in honor of Massachusetts Boys & Girls Clubs and the over 75,000 children and teens that they serve. The bridges will light up 45 minutes before sunset and will turn off at sunrise.
For over 100 years Boys & Girls Clubs in Massachusetts have been providing safe and affordable out of school time programs for thousands of children. When school is out, the Boys & Girls Clubs are there to answer the call and as we head back to a new school year, Clubs will continue to serve the youth of our Commonwealth. The light on the bridges, is a reflection of the light Clubs bring into our children’s lives every day. The bridge lighting is part of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s Bridge lighting initiative.
The Massachusetts Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs is a group of 40 independent Boys & Girls Club organizations operating throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The Alliance was formed in 2000 for the purpose of seeking and sharing financial and program opportunities to help better serve Massachusetts children and teens. Through collaboration and cooperation, the Alliance helps to ensure that great futures start right here in the Bay State. To find out more please visit the website at: www.massalliancebgc.org
