They want to be sure that they get the assets that they are buying free and clear of any liabilities left over from the seller.”

Essentially, Sigman Law provides “soup to nuts” legal services to the Buyer/Seller involved in the restaurant transaction. Sigman Law represents Buyers/Sellers under a flat fee rate.

Putting green practices into practice…Tarlow Breed Hart & Rodgers P.C. accepted into Sustainable Business Leader Program; becomes a “leader” in sustainable business practices initiative.

February 3, 2010 //  by admin

BOSTON, MASS.

Despite the explosion in the use of digital information, the legal industry continues to consume too much paper. As a profession, far too many lawyers believe that more words are better and that everything must be printed multiple times just in case. In an effort to change this behavior and reduce its carbon footprint, Boston-based Tarlow Breed Hart & Rodgers, P.C. (TBHR) recently implemented a sustainability program developed with Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) and Mass Department of Environmental (DEP)’s Sustainable Business Leader Program (SBLP).

TBHR’s program was developed as a result of SBLP’s comprehensive audit, which focused on six key areas: waste reduction, water and energy conservation, transportation solutions and pollution prevention.  The Firm created a “Green Team” of attorneys and staff to develop achievable changes to challenge all personnel to take a moment to think before they consume.

Says Michael Radin, an attorney with the Firm and Green Team member, “Our firm culture is rooted in an appreciation of the interdependencies of what each of us does.  If we want to have a good tomorrow, each of us needs to act for it today.”

“When the program opened to us, we jumped on the opportunity,” says Jennifer A. Civitella Hilario, an associate who like many of her co-workers tries in her personal life to reuse, recycle and reduce waste.  “Applying my own personal conservation practices at the office helps me to get an entire organization to consume less – I am thrilled.”

Some of the steps THBR has taken include electrical energy management and water and kitchen paper use reduction. “I much prefer using a mug given to us by one of our clients,” adds Radin

“What’s been an enlightening part about this process is the need to educate others on the lots of little things we can do that together have a huge impact,” said Civitella Hilario.  “Thanks to SBLP and our Green Team, we’re a greener company and have a group in place actively looking for ways to improve the efficiency of our energy use.”

As part of the SLBP audit, TBHR engaged with its landlord Boston Properties which itself has a team of professionals working to get tenants focused on ways to be more efficient and less wasteful.  “Working with Boston Properties was fabulous – they really reached out to us and together we are planning to approach our entire building to get other tenants involved,” adds Civitella Hilario.

The SBLP was formed in 2008 via collaboration between the DEP and the BRA. SLBP has worked with more than 60 businesses to become sustainable leaders in the community.  Each business completes SBLP’s rigorous assessment and receives personalized technical assistance over a six-month period before becoming eligible for the Sustainable Business Leader status.

For more information on the SBLP, visit http://www.sustainablebusinessleader.org.

Never too old to adopt…Tarlow Breed Hart & Rodgers P.C. helps play Santa for New England Center for Homeless Veterans’s “Adopt a Vet” program.

January 18, 2010 //  by admin

BOSTON, MASS.

We all have our wish list when it comes to gifts we’d like to receive for Christmas. The residents of the New England Center for Homeless Veterans, located at 17 Court Street in Boston, are no different—only that list contains some of life’s necessities, like warm clothing for the winter. As part of the Center’s “Adopt-a-Vet” program, Boston-based Tarlow Breed Hart & Rodgers, P.C. (TBHR) helped make the wishes of two dozen homeless veterans come true.

The Adopt-a-Vet program involves each resident drafting a list of items he or she would like to receive for Christmas. Donors are then asked to purchase and wrap gifts from that list to be given to the residents for Christmas. More than 20 members of TBHR’s staff contributed gifts to this year’s program, enabling TBHR adopted shelter residents to check off every item on their wish lists.

“This is such a worthwhile program on so many levels. When our car pulled up, the Shelter volunteers were ecstatic!” said Jennifer A. Civitella Hilario, a lawyer at TBHR who volunteers her time at the Center and who coordinates the firm’s participation.  “What makes it even more worthwhile is that the donations and contributions from our firm and other companies and individuals made it possible for every veteran who participated to receive most of the items on their lists.”

Items contributed to the Adopt-a-Vet program include:

  • winter coats
  • gloves, hats, waterproof boots
  • sweaters, shirts, jeans
  • gift cards to Walgreens, McDonalds, Starbucks
  • notebooks, journals
  • books
  • MBTA’s Charlie Cards

December 28, 2009 //  by admin

BOSTON, MASS.

As part of the Massachusetts Super Lawyers segment in its November 2009 issue, Boston Magazine recognized five associates from Boston-based Tarlow Breed Hart & Rodgers, P.C. (TBHR) as “Rising Stars”.  Those selected include: Jennifer A. Civitella Hilario, of Somerville, previously named in 2008; Michael Dominick, of Boston; John D. Breed III, a member of the firm’s management committee. “So, while I know it’s personally gratifying to Jennifer, Michael, John, Terry and Emily to achieve this honor, the partners take even more pride and satisfaction in their selection because we’re not only thrilled for our co-workers, we’re growing future leaders of our firm.”

(TBHR) in the 2009 Super Lawyers section.  Those selected include TBHR Members: Edward D. Tarlow, of Concord; Richard P. Breed III, of Marblehead; Jeffrey P. Hart, of Medfield; William R. Rodgers, of Newton; Albert A. DeNapoli, of Walpole; Mark S. Furman, of Needham; Robert J. Kerwin, of West Roxbury; and Geoffrey E. Super Lawyers selections are based on a statewide survey of more than 37,000 attorneys. Candidates are then evaluated based on peer recognition and professional achievement and then grouped and ranked by practice area.  Those with the highest point totals are selected. The final Super Lawyers represent the top five percent of the attorneys in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Tarlow Breed Hart & Rodgers P.C.’s Christopher Hunt presents at IT conference.

October 7, 2009 //  by admin

BOSTON, MASS.

Christopher Hunt, director of information technology at Boston-based Tarlow Breed Hart & Rodgers, P.C. (TBHR), recently presented at the International Legal Technology Association (ILTA) 2009 Annual conference, held at the Gaylord National Resort in Maryland from August 23-27, 2009.

Hunt spoke at the session entitled “Mobile Device Management: Can You Afford (Not) to Go It Alone?” as part of the Mobile, Remote & Wireless Technologies Peer Group track of the conference. He was one of three speakers on the panel for the session and acted as moderator, leading the discussion and also presenting information specific to TBHR.

“The utilization of wireless technology is critical for most businesses nowadays but even more so for law firms, as our attorneys spend quite a bit of time outside the office but still need to be connected and accessible,” said Hunt. “Attending and presenting at the ILTA was a great opportunity to not only share my expertise but to learn more about how other firms utilize wireless technologies and how they enforce policies and procedures towards the use of those technologies.”

Established more than three decades ago, ILTA provides its members—consisting of IT professionals employed by in-house legal departments or law firms–educational content and peer-to-peer networking opportunities. This includes events like the annual conference, webinars, teleconferences, seminars, regional and international events, white papers and much more.

A graduate of Northeastern University, Hunt began with TBHR in 1995. As part of his role as director of information technology, his responsibilities include utilizing the firm’s IT for litigation support, marketing support and facilities management.

Hunt resides in Lowell, Massachusetts with his wife Jodi and his stepson Brendon.

The unkindest cut…How employers can take the sting out of employee pay cuts.

June 15, 2009 //  by admin

BOSTON, MASS…

As an employee, it’s a choice you never want to have to make: take a pay cut or possibly lose your job. For employers, the impact can be even more severe. Not only does asking your workers to take a pay cut put a serious damper on morale in the present, it can permanently alter how your employees feel about the company—even if things do turn around.

Boston-based Tarlow, Breed, Hart & Rodgers, P.C., advises a number of businesses small and large as part of its corporate law practice. When it comes to pay cuts, the Firm offers some suggestions for companies looking for a silver lining for this very dark cloud.

“It’s an incredibly difficult thing for an employer to ask their employees to take a cut in pay. First, it’s an admission that your company is not doing well, which is a tough pill for any business owner to swallow. More importantly, a pay cut will negatively impact the lives of people you work closely with day and day out, in some cases, for many years. Despite what some might think, most owners do care about their workers and asking anybody to take a cut in pay not based on the employee’s performance is difficult,” said William Rodgers, a member of TBHR.

So, how do you soften the blow of asking your workers to take a pay cut?

“There really is no way to make a good situation out of asking your staff to take a pay cut. The best you can hope for is to make it less bad,” said Rodgers.

And how do you accomplish that? For starters:

·         Make pay cuts a last resort – exhaust every possibility before even entertaining the idea of pay cuts. If there’s a way around pay cuts, take it.

·         Give something back – perhaps it’s a shorter work day on Fridays (9 to 4 instead of 9 to 5); maybe a more casual dress code; how about an additional sick day or personal day? Giving something back lets employees know that the ownership does appreciate their sacrifice.

·         Deliver the news in person – this might not always be possible. If it is, do it. And remember to apologize. It’s important for employees to know that this is difficult for everybody and you genuinely feel bad about it.

·         Be forthcoming with news – if the pay cuts are temporary, provide employees with regular status reports on how the company is doing.

·         Do not make promises you cannot keep – stating pay cuts are only temporary is one thing, putting a date on when salaries will be reinstituted is foolish unless you are 100 percent certain it can happen.

Chances are, no matter what measures ownership takes, some employees will take the news worse than others. Some may even seek legal action. Having clearly stated policies in your employee handbooks regarding possible wage reductions and associated issues—e.g. switch from salary to a reduced salary and commission—can alleviate confusion and minimize the risk of potential litigation.

“When it comes to asking your employees to take a pay cut, nobody wins. By dealing with the situation with sensitivity, compassion and honesty you can minimize the bad feelings and that can go a long way with the employees who are still on board after the smoke clears from this recession,” said Rodgers.

Tarlow Breed Hart & Rodgers P.C.’s Hunt receives honorable mention for Mass. Lawyer’s Weekly’s Unsung Hero Award.

October 30, 2008 //  by admin

BOSTON, MASS.

Christopher Hunt, director of information technology at Boston-based Tarlow Breed Hart & Rodgers, P.C. (TBHR), received an honorable mention in the IT category of Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly’s ‘Unsung Heroes’ for 2008.Chris was one of the finalists in the IT category and was honored at an awards reception held at the Boston Convention Center on October 23.

Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly awards the Unsung Hero honor to someone who has demonstrated outstanding qualities and shown an extra effort in helping his or her company, or someone who has an amazing ability to encourage others.  The Unsung Hero Award also recognizes those who perform internal corporate citizenship and cultivate pride within their companies, and whose exceptional efforts should not go unnoticed or unrewarded.  According to TBHR, Hunt fits these criteria to a “T”.

“Chris is an extremely important part of our operation,” said Jeffrey P. Hart, a partner at TBHR.  “He keeps the computer systems and other IT running smoothly for a 50+ person office, which is a feat unto itself. When you consider the gravity of information we deal with as attorneys, and also factor in the crazy hours we keep, his efforts are even more impressive.  Chris is truly deserving of this recognition.”

Hunt began with the firm in 1995 through the co-operative education program at Northeastern University.  A criminal justice major, he oversaw office services as part of his co-op job, but also demonstrated an aptitude for diagnosing and fixing computers. TBHR quickly recognized these talents – so much so, they hired him to head up their IT efforts upon his graduation.  His role has evolved to encompass not only the firm’s IT needs, but includes litigation support, marketing support and managing the firm’s facilities and records.

“During his time with the firm, Chris successfully implemented two major upgrades of our servers and networking equipment. He also supervised the 2004 relocation of our office from the Financial District to our current location at 101 Huntington Avenue in the Back Bay, working tirelessly to ensure a seamless transition during this significant undertaking,” said Hart.  “Chris is highly thought of by everyone at the firm. As our IT Director, he is an integral part of our team. We are pleased that he has remained with us through the years and that we have had the opportunity to grow together.”

Hunt holds a bachelor’s of science in criminal justice from Northeastern University and is a member of the International Legal Technology Association (ILTA), the leading organization for IT professionals in the legal industry.  Hunt currently resides in Lowell with his wife, Jodi, and his stepson, Brendon.
