Fun for the Whole Family at Moving Heels for Meals on Wheels 5K Road Race/Walk

Lace up those sneakers for a good cause!
Old Colony Elder Services’ (OCES) family and dog-friendly “Moving Heels for Meals on Wheels” 5K Road Race/Walk to benefit the Meals on Wheels program will be held Sunday, April 2, 2017 at 9 a.m. All of the money raised supports OCES’ vital Meals on Wheels program.
More than 60 runners and walkers participated in OCES’ Moving Heels for Meals on Wheels 5K last year, and OCES’ would like to double the number of participants this year. Team OCES encourages you to bring your family, friends, colleagues and dogs to run/walk for a good cause.
Costume Contest for Kids and Canines
Children age 12 and under are encouraged to wear a food themed costume (carrot, apple, etc.) that best represents healthy living and nutrition, for a chance to win a special prize provided by Mickey Adventures of Carver.
J. M. Pet Resorts of Brockton is providing a $40 grooming/product gift certificate for the best healthy food dog costume.
Silver Lake Starting Line
The race begins at 9:00 a.m. at Silver Lake Regional High School, 260 Pembroke Street in Kingston, MA 02364. Online registration for the Moving Heels for Meals on Wheels 5K is $25 for adults; $20 for students age 11-18; $15 for children (age 10 and under) and children in carriages ride free.
All participants will receive a swag bag and water will be provided. Register by Tuesday, March 21st to receive a race T-shirt.

How Meals on Wheels Works
As part of their Nutrition Program, OCES delivers 1,600 nutritious meals a day to older adults and individuals with disabilities living within 23 communities in greater Plymouth County. These “Meals on Wheels” are planned by a nutritionist, and with the help of hundreds of volunteers, are delivered either to individual homes or to Community Dining Sites, which provide older adults opportunities for social interaction.
“For many of our most vulnerable older adults and people with disabilities, our Meals on Wheels home delivery is often their only social contact of the day,” explained Nicole Long, CEO. “Despite recent federal and state budget cuts, OCES is committed to this vital program, and our 5K fundraiser will enable us to keep ‘Meals on Wheels’ rolling along.”

Masters Touch, Holliston, MA, Honors 20th Anniversary with Donation to American Cancer Society

Masters Touch Design Build, the award-winning custom home and renovation contractor based in Holliston, MA, honored their 20th anniversary with a $12,500 donation to the American Cancer Society (ACS).

The firm held a combined 20-year anniversary holiday party and Fundraiser for ACS in December. The event, which was held at the Crystal Room in Milford, MA, was a tremendous success with 225 customers, employees, subcontractors, vendors, friends, and family in attendance to celebrate and support this good cause. A dedicated “Team ACS” page was also set up on the American Cancer Society website for online donations.

“Nearly everyone has been touched by cancer in some way. To show our support and make a difference, we formed a team dedicated to supporting the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving work in research, education, advocacy, and patient services,” said Doug Masters, founder of Masters Touch. “We are delighted to support ACS with this contribution in honor of our 20th anniversary.”

Renovations Complete at FitWorx Pembroke

FitWorx, the “non-gym” solution for a healthy lifestyle and weight loss with four locations in Massachusetts, has recently completed renovations of their Pembroke location in the North River Plaza Shopping Center, at 125 Church Street.

FitWorx’ Pembroke club opened in 2013 and was the first of their four locations. Although the size of the space has only been increased by an additional 200 s.f., the layout has been completely redesigned to maximize the space and make it more user friendly for FitCoaches and members.

Updates include a new spa inspired decor and a floor plan that is now similar to their other locations. FitWorx Pembroke now has a soothing, warm color palette, and plenty of room to move about. Tropical plants, natural lighting and carpeting accent the interior. New equipment (six treadmills) has been added.

With eight FitCoaches, the Pembroke club caters to more than 725 members, and expects to grow to more than 800 members by year-end.

“We’re seeing an increasing number of Baby Boomers who are looking to lose weight and are in need of better instruction and programming, but who also want an environment in which they are truly comfortable. FitWorx offers a friendly, inviting and supportive environment. Hull, MA Artist, Priscilla Beadle Shares Fashion Insights

Hull MA artist, Priscilla Beadle, 75 years old, has been creating unique bead jewelry since 1995. As she travels the world in search of beads, Beadle has observed fashion trends worldwide. Though she aims not to be trendy in her creations, Beadle is aware of what people are wearing today.

Venice, Italy, is Beadle’s favorite city for inspiration. “It’s the ultimate feast for the eyes—for unadulterated romanticism,” declares Beadle. When Beadle lived in Paris in the 1960’s, she remembers her French roommate had only three dresses, yet the young woman always looked fascinating. The French woman used accessories of scarves, necklaces, belts, hats, gloves, bracelets and other jewelry.

French women, Beadle believes, are not more attractive than American women, only more stylish. Beadle’s accessory to count on is a short necklace with sterling silver and pearls. A “sunshine cloth” is Beadle’s secret helper to keep sterling silver gleaming.

A simple way to look fabulous is to wear jewelry and clothing that make you feel good. Sometimes when considering a necklace, women confide in Beadle, “I’m too short,” or “I’m too chubby,” or “I’m too old” to wear the one they like. Beadle’s advice is to choose pieces that speak to you—it could be a favorite color or stone—and wear them whenever you want. It’s acceptable to wear a favorite necklace with a t-shirt to go shopping, not only with haute couture to a special event.

Beadle sums up her color philosophy in three words: surprising, unexpected, yet related. In general she recommends being freer with color and avoiding ‘matchy-matchy”. Her heroine for how vibrant she wishes to be at age 90 is Iris Apfel, the irreverent American fashion icon and businesswoman who is known for wearing ethnic pieces from around the world.

Beadle’s guilty fashion pleasure is to buy one fabulous necklace during any trip, especially to Europe. When she first began to make necklaces, Beadle only wore her own creations. But after 22 years of jewelry-making, Beadle takes pleasure wearing any necklace that speaks to her. “Yesterday I wore a fun necklace I found in Milan,” Beadle confides, “I’ve received several compliments!”

Creating bead jewelry art since 1993, Priscilla Beadle first found inspiration for her bold, eclectic designs in the bazaars of Tibet and Nepal, in dusty shops in Beijing, on remote Indonesian islands reached by catamaran, in beautiful Bali, and in verdant Indochina—Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Each Beadleful design starts with a centerpiece—add whimsy, color excitement, texture, chunky beads, a fabulous clasp—a collectable necklace is born.

Priscilla Beadle returned to her hometown, Hull MA, in 2011. For 34 years she had lived in California, eleven in the historic mission town of San Luis Obispo. She brought her business, Beadleful, with her and crafted a comfortable studio for her work on the ground floor of her home. Old Colony Elder Services Announces New Development Manager

Madeline (Lynn) Smith has been appointed as the new Development Manager at Old Colony Elder Services (OCES), the non-profit agency proudly serving older adults and individuals with disabilities throughout greater Plymouth County and surrounding communities.

In her role as Development Manager at OCES, Ms. Smith will be responsible for securing additional grants to increase financial support for the agency as well as implementing and maintaining a comprehensive development plan with marketing strategies that strengthen community awareness of OCES’ programs and resources.

Ms. Smith has more than 20 years of business development and marketing experience and holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and Economics from Emmanuel College in Boston. Previous to OCES, Ms. Smith spearheaded a grant funded Community Engagement Project for the City of Brockton, establishing the Keith Park Neighborhood Association, Frederick Douglass Neighborhood Association, and Edgar Park Neighborhood Association, while also creating an appreciation and pride of place in downtown Brockton. For four years prior to that, she was Senior Vice President of Community and Business Relations and Marketing at Start Community Bank in New Haven, CT. Her vast experience includes serving as Senior Vice President in the Institutional Banking Division at First Trade Union Bank in Boston, and as Executive Vice President in the Municipal Finance Division at United States Trust Company in Boston.

Ms. Smith was the 2015 recipient of the Lee Harmon UNITY in the Community Service Award (Brockton, MA) as well as a 2012 recipient of the Nonprofit Partnership Award from the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce for her efforts in financial literacy community outreach. She has served on a number of local committees including the Downtown Brockton Parade Committee and the Brockton Downtown Action Strategy Partnership, and serves as the treasurer of Campello Main Streets and president of the Frederick Douglass Neighborhood Association.

Originally from Boston, Ms. Smith has been a resident of Brockton for the past thirty-two years.

Talking Information Center’s Boston Studio at MCB Now Open

Talking Information Center (TIC), the award-winning, nonprofit reading service based in Marshfield, MA, which broadcasts 24 hours a day to visually impaired and otherwise print impaired listeners throughout Massachusetts, recently announced the opening of a second studio in Boston.

TIC is proud to announce that their Boston studio, located at the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind (MCB), 600 Washington Street, Boston, is now in operation. The new location serves as a direct link to their Marshfield studio and provides a more convenient location for state officials and other guests who would otherwise have to commute to Marshfield.

“We are thrilled to be able to record interviews in our Boston studio as it better facilitates scheduling of our guests who are located in town,” noted James Bunnell, Executive Director of TIC. “Our Boston studio may be used to advocate for different agencies, as it enables MCB and others to reach the community.”

In addition to their Boston and Marshfield studios, TIC has affiliates in Mashpee, Pittsfield, Lowell, Springfield, and Worcester broadcasting their diverse programs 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

The Hub of the Massachusetts Reading Network

TIC is a proud member of the International Association of Audible Information Services (IAAIS), and is the hub of the Massachusetts Reading Network, broadcasting to all of Massachusetts as well as southern New Hampshire and Connecticut. TIC operates with the help of more than 600 volunteers statewide, broadcasting newspapers, magazines, books, special consumer information, medical and stock market updates, jobs, sports, supermarket specials, voting guides, community newspapers, and television programs. TIC also offers cultural programming such as old-time radio drama, theater, and poetry. Two of TIC’s newest shows include Veterans Voice Radio and Veterans Voice Story Hour, which are specifically geared toward military veterans and their families.

TIC programming may be accessed several ways: via live audio stream at http://www.ticnetwork.org; by utilizing a specially tuned radio receiver; through AudioNow by calling 712-832-7025 from a home or cell phone; or by smartphone app. Listeners with smartphones may download the free TIC app by typing “Talking Information Center” in Apple or in the Google Play store for Android devices.

In 1977, Ed Perry, the founder of radio station WATD-FM in Marshfield, MA, donated his Subsidiary Carrier Authorization signal for use as the first radio reading service in New England. Operating similarly to other broadcast networks, TIC has affiliates throughout the state of Massachusetts that provide inserts of local news and information that is of interest to listeners in their area. Jim Mileski of Old Colony Elder Services Retires After 38 Years

Old Colony Elder Services (OCES), the non-profit agency proudly serving older adults and individuals with disabilities throughout greater Plymouth County and surrounding communities, announced that Jim Mileski has recently retired after 38 years of dedicated service.

Mr. Mileski began his career at OCES on December 5, 1978 when he joined 25 co-workers at the agency. He was hired as a Case Manager, but shortly after, in fulfillment of an agency need, Mr. Mileski was asked to oversee multiple OCES contracts with service providers. He accepted that challenge and served in the capacity of Contracts Manager until his retirement.

In January, OCES’ Board of Directors recognized Mr. Mileski for his 38 years of dedicated service and contributions as a valued employee. A retirement party for Mr. Mileski was held at OCES’ Brockton office on Main Street. While Mr. Mileski knew about the party, he did not know that he would be presented with a professional chef’s hat as a part of the festivities, as a nod to his passion for baking and sharing of his delicious creations with his colleagues.

Brenda Correia, Coordinator for Elder Community Support Programs at the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ Executive Office of Elder Affairs (EOEA) attended Mr. Mileski’s retirement party and presented him with a Certificate of Excellence on behalf of EOEA for his 38 years of dedicated service in the community.

“Jim came on board in our early days, just four years after our founding, and has been an integral part of our team ever since,” explained Nicole Long, CEO. “Jim’s efforts have truly contributed to our success, and we thank him for his dedication to OCES for the past 38 years. Congratulations Jim, and we wish you a very happy and healthy retirement!”

FitWorx Promotes Sara Fuller, DPT

FitWorx, the “non-gym” solution for a healthy lifestyle and weight loss with four locations in Massachusetts, has promoted Sara Fuller, DPT to Corporate Outreach Director and General Manager of the Pembroke location.

Fuller, who is a physical therapist, has been with FitWorx for two and a half years, previously holding the position of manager at the Pembroke location. In her expanded role, Fuller will be responsible for all corporate outreach, and oversee operations and all staff at the Pembroke location. Additionally, Fuller has been named to FitWorx’ Advisory Board, where she will serve as an expert advisor to senior management and FitWorx FitCoaches with regard to program development, medical evaluations, nutrition and fitness.

Fuller holds a Doctor of Physical Therapy from Simmons College in Boston, and is Athletic Trainer Certified. She is also Nutrition Certified from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). She is a member of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce. For seven years prior to FitWorx, Fuller worked as a physical therapist in the neurology department of the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC.

“Helping individuals realize that attaining a healthier lifestyle is possible, and then working with them every step of the way towards success is incredibly rewarding,” explained Fuller.

She continued, “Previous to FitWorx, my role was to rehabilitate a patient post surgery or post injury over a prescribed period of time with the goal of returning him or her to functional independence and his/her previous level of activity,” said Fuller. “I am very passionate about preventative work and helping individuals over the long-term. I believe that independence is optimal function, and FitWorx is where I can help individuals the most.”

As part of Fuller’s corporate outreach, she strives to connect with local physicians and healthcare professionals in creating greater awareness among their patients of FitWorx’ proven approaches to weight loss and fitness.

Apollo Safety Launches a Dedicated Waste Management Division

Apollo Safety, Inc., providers of gas detection products and services for universities, hospitals, government operations and other organizations, recently announced the formation of a special division to serve waste management facilities throughout New England.

Focused on prevention, Apollo Safety has created a dedicated Waste Management Division to provide gas detection equipment, maintenance and monitoring services to this growing niche market. The new division caters to waste management facilities, including transfer stations and construction and demolition debris recycling facilities.

“Gas detection systems at waste disposal and recycling facilities are imperative for employee and public safety. The systems alarm at the first sign of trouble – such as carbon monoxide or other hazardous gas,” explained John V. Carvalho III, president of Apollo Safety.

Apollo Safety implemented a gas detection monitoring system at New Bedford Waste Services, the largest enclosed construction and demolition debris recycling facility in New England.
