Coffee Milk, grass-fed beef, locally caught seafood, farm boxes and preservative-free pet food are just some examples of the local flavor delivered by the modern milkmen at Crescent Ridge Dairy.

July 3, 2019 //  by admin

Eating in America has evolved exponentially since WWII, when scarcity sparked major innovations in transportation and storage. Advances in the food industry like canning, monoculture (growing one crop) and genetic modification have helped to fill the shelves of our local markets with low cost meals. Though the industrialization of food has largely been a success, many feel that mass-produced edibles sacrifice the health of consumers and the environment. Beyond that: they just don’t taste as good.

In an effort to address these concerns, more consumers are gravitating toward foods that are locally sourced and naturally produced. Crescent Ridge Dairy, located in Sharon, MA, is helping families throughout the region reclaim their dinner tables by expanding their existing home milk delivery system to include more unique dairy products as well as other groceries from small regional entities.

One such addition to Crescent Ridge’s home delivery catalog is the regional favorite, coffee milk. Coffee flavored syrup with milk was first served commercial at drug stores and soda fountains in Rhode Island nearly a century ago. The drink became so popular that companies in New Bedford, Massachusetts and Warwick Rhode Island began full-scale production of the syrup for New Englanders to mix their own coffee milk at home. Crescent Ridge takes this tradition a step further by premixing their own classic-style coffee syrup with their famous fresh milk and packaging it in glass bottles for optimal taste. One sip of this beverage has the ability to transport you to a simpler time.

Before industrialized food, people ate what they or their neighbors could grow, raise and preserve in their locality. The fruits, vegetables, and livestock they ate corresponded with the seasons of the year. Though limited selection required some additional creativity in the kitchen, families had meals that tasted better and were better for them due to minimal preservatives, hormones and shipping time. For houses on the routes of Crescent Ridge Milkmen, this part of The American Dream is still a reality. Of course, today, they can supplement their pantries with modern amenities as well.

In addition to the fresh dairy products, grass-fed beef, and humanely raised pork that comes from Crescent Ridge’s own Sharon farm, the brand has teamed up with other like-minded companies in the region to expand their catalogue to include cage-free eggs, artisan breads and much more. One partner is Red’s Best Seafood, who’s QR code labeled products allow consumers to learn about one of the fishermen who helped bring that specific species from the sea, to Boston Harbor and eventually, your home. Another is their Sharon neighbor, Ward’s Berry Farm, who’s offerings include a ‘Farmer’s Choice Box’ which contents represent the best seasonal produce of that particular week.  Whole Life Pet brings farm to under-the-table with their line of pet treats made with 100% human grade ingredients and natural preserving techniques.

The Crescent Ridge Story

Malby and Mildred Parrish started Crescent Ridge in 1932 when they purchased the 44-acre plot farmland on Sharon’s historic Bay Road and made it suitable to grow crops and raise cows for milk. Back then, Malby was able to make his rounds delivering fresh dairy to the community with just one dependable 1928 Chevrolet truck. In less than 10 years, the operation had achieved enough success to justify the installation of a modern pasteurization and bottling plant. By 1953 Crescent Ridge controlled a fleet of milk trucks that served not only families in Sharon, but the neighboring towns of Canton, Stoughton, Norwood, Walpole and Westwood, Massachusetts as well.

Crescent Ridge opened their first Dairy Bar on their original plot of land in 1968. Its popularity has only grown since then, with the ice cream it serves winning the reputation of the best in New England amongst locals and seasoned travelers alike. Years later, National Geographic would name it one of The 10 Best Ice Creams in the World. More recently, Crescent Ridge was named 2019 Best of Boston, Best Ice Cream.

This expansion and the loyal following Crescent Ridge helped the brand weather the troubled economic climate of the 1970 and prosper into the 1980’s. By the early 1990’s Crescent Ridge began expanding its menu starting with fresh squeezed orange juice.

Mark Parrish became the third generation to operate the family business in 1998. This same year, he made significant investments into Crescent Ridge’s infrastructure by expanding their warehouse, freezer and lab space and making updates to their milk plant. Mark continues to innovate and grow the Crescent Ridge brand. Their products can now be found on the shelves of major stores like Stop & Shop, Whole Foods, Shaws / Star Market, Roche Bros, Big Y and others. He has teamed up with other local businesses and diversified his own operation to feature fresh seafood, grass-fed beef, pork, chicken, produce, maple syrup and other artisan products in their catalogue.

Crescent Ridge’s farm and ice cream dairy bar are located at 355 Bay Road, Sharon MA 02067. A second dairy bar location is Boston Public Market, 100 Hanover Street, Boston. For more information, call (781) 784-2740 or visit crescentridge.com.

More than 150 Marched Against Elder Abuse in Brockton & Plymouth

June 28, 2019 //  by admin

March Against Elder Abuse along Plymouth waterfront on June 20th

In an effort to raise awareness of elder abuse, Old Colony Elder Services (OCES), the non-profit agency proudly serving older adults and individuals with disabilities throughout greater Plymouth County, held “March Against Elder Abuse” events in Brockton and Plymouth.

June 15th was World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), launched by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations. In recognition of the day, more than 150 community supporters, including civic leaders and health workers, joined OCES and the Brockton Council on Aging (COA) and Plymouth Center for Active Living in March Against Elder Abuse events.

Brockton March

OCES, the Brockton COA and participants walked in the March Against Elder Abuse along Main Street on June 13, 2019. The March began at the Brockton COA and looped around the COA and back. This March was in honor of Pat Foley, a longtime employee of OCES, volunteer and advocate who passed away this past December. After the march, participants gathered at the Brockton COA for a luncheon. Guest speakers Teresa Kourtz, Director of Protective Services at OCES, and Janice Fitzgerald, Director of Brockton COA presented the “Pat Foley Advocacy Award” to Pat’s Foley’s family which was accepted by Bob Foley. Tobias T. Cowans, representing Brockton Mayor Bill Carpenter, gave the proclamation for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Sheriff McDonald spoke on behalf of the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department to bring attention to the local concerns regarding elder abuse and to express his gratitude to all who play a role in protecting our elders. Community activists Senator Michael Brady, Representative Gerry Cassidy, and Representative Michelle DuBois, who have supported efforts around this issue, were recognized.

Sponsors of the Brockton March included Baypointe, HarborOne, Harbor Health Elder Service Plan, Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department, Plymouth County District Attorney, Westside Pizza and the Brockton Council on Aging.

Plymouth March

OCES, the Center for Active Living and participants walked in the March Against Elder Abuse along the Plymouth waterfront on June 20, 2019. Participants were transported to Pilgrim Memorial State Park to walk, then transported back to the Center for Active Living for a lunch and a special ceremony. Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz spoke at the ceremony about elder abuse. Community activists Plymouth Police Chief Michael Botieri and DA Timothy Cruz who have supported efforts around this issue were recognized.

Sponsors of the Plymouth March included Baypointe, HarborOne, Harbor Health Elder Service Plan, Friends of the Plymouth Council on Aging, A&A Metro Transportation, NaviCare, Bills Pizza, Gatra, Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department, Plymouth County District Attorney and the Plymouth Center for Active Living.

“World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is an opportunity to increase awareness about abuse, neglect, and exploitation of older adults,” said Teresa Kourtz, Director of Protective Services at OCES. “Let’s all work together to make a difference.”

Recognizing Elder Abuse

The Executive Office of Elder Affairs received 34,216 reports state-wide in fiscal year 2018. Elder abuse includes financial exploitation, emotional, physical, and sexual abuse or neglect. Common risk factors are social isolation, poor physical health and dementia.

OCES Protective Services Program staff works with older adults or their designees to prevent, eliminate or remedy situations involving emotional, physical or sexual abuse, neglect by a caregiver, financial exploitation and/or self–neglect. When there is a report made to the Elder Abuse Hotline (1-800-922-2275), and the elder resides in our catchment area, OCES will receive the report and determine if further investigation is necessary by a Protective Services Worker.

If you need help or information, call OCES Protective Services at 508-584-1561.

Can we stay out late, kick our shoes off and take the summer off?

June 27, 2019 //  by admin

Often times the client asking the question has a summer home on Nantucket or the Jersey Shore or Bar Harbor. Their mindset is that EVERYONE takes the summer off.

We often respond with our own questions.

Do you want to keep your light on? Do you want the phone to ring? Do you want traffic to your website? Do you want to make bank deposits?

A bit brash, but reasonable follow up questions.

Yes, audiences for all media channels decreases in the summer. Thank God people are actually taking some time to embrace the warmth. Yes, people are going to the beach, getting on a boat, hopping on a bike, pitching a tent, taking a hike.

People are spending less time culling the news, kibitzing on social media and obsessing with podcasts.

BUT enough of them are paying attention and are continuing BUYING patterns.

No, of course, we don’t recommend that you rollout a new service or product in the summer. Unless you want a soft trial.

Research from the Journal of Consumer Psychology has shown that warm temperatures strengthen the concept of social closeness, activate feelings of emotional warmth, and increase product valuation—meaning your customers are more likely to buy from you during the summer months if you engage them with the right message.

Although, summer is rarely the peak season for most (unless you are in the hospitality world and in a tourist community), marketing should and must continue.

Let us know if you’d like to visit lovely Plymouth for a lobstahhh roll or a quick audit of your PR/Marketing plans.

Emerson Bearing Boston Offers Secondary Sealing System for Type E Units

June 18, 2019 //  by admin

Emerson Bearing Boston, a bearing company catering to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) markets around the world, now offers a secondary sealing system for Type E Housed Units which better withstands harsh environments, protects against contamination and moisture, and provides improved life.

Machine tool applications require bearings that are designed for rigid, high speed, high precision machine tool spindles. Type E Units provide a combination of high radial and thrust loads. For extra protection and to increase uptime in severely contaminated and wet environments, Emerson Bearing has expanded their line to include the multi-point sealing system – the TIMKEN® Type E Tapered Roller Bearing Housed Unit Secondary Sealing System.

The system has a rugged cover that protects against contamination (particularly in industries where particulates are an issue) and upgraded abrasion-resistant, triple-barrier internal seal for harsh and/or dirty applications. Type E Secondary Sealing Systems are available in the full range of units from 13/16” to 5” and 35 mm to 100 mm.

“The Type E Mounted Unit is widely used in heavy duty applications and the add-on of a secondary seal has broadened the range of applications where customers can get improved life,” explained Steve Katz, president. “At Emerson Bearing, Type E units are among our top sellers for their cost-effective, efficient design.”

Type E Pillow Blocks and More

At Emerson Bearing, we offer various types of mounting units well-suited to a range of heavy-duty applications. Pillow block mounted units are ideal for smaller loads and less rigorous applications. Flange block mounted units are held in place by two or four bolts, and it is the four-bolt design that can take larger loads and is typically employed for heavy-duty applications. Hanger blocks are almost always used for conveyor belts, and are made of well-lubricated split roller bearings that are housed together and can be hung from a conveyor.

Machine Tool Division

Bob Piracini, Senior Marketing Specialist leads Emerson Bearing’s Machine Tool division. Emerson Bearing’s knowledgeable Machine Tool team assists clients in determining which bearing technologies would be most suitable by taking into consideration the specifications, recommendations, maintenance strategies, fatigue life and wear resistance of the bearing in relation to the application.

Katz continued, “We have a sourcing network that spans the globe, and our experts can assist in the selection of the right bearing for its specific application and requirements to ensure superior performance and avoid costly pitfalls and downtime.”

For more information about the secondary sealing system available through Emerson Bearing, visit www.emersonbearing.com.
