August 13, 2021 //  by admin

Ready for that new luxury car? Hit a hole in one at Type One’s 1st Annual Par For The Cure Golf Tourney at Crosswinds Golf Club in Plymouth, MA and you’ll win a 24-month lease on a Mercedes-Benz thanks to Mercedes-Benz of Hanover, a member of the Prime Automotive Group.

Type One, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Hingham, MA, is raising funds to support type 1 diabetes research and assist those living with the disease by holding their 1st Annual Par For The Cure Golf Tourney at Crosswinds Golf Club on Wednesday, September 15, 2021.

Type One’s golf tourney supports the Type One Cares charity dedicated to building a community to assist those affected by type 1 diabetes with support, education and endowment, so they can live a powerful life beyond the diagnosis. Type One Cares does this while continuing to fund research at the Faustman Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).

“We are so grateful to all of our sponsors and supporters. Mercedes-Benz of Hanover has been supporting Type One’s mission over these many years and we are very fortunate to have them as a Premier Sponsors for the golf tourney, providing this very generous prize,” said Type One’s co-founder, Paul Foti.

Golf, Live & Silent Auction

Par For The Cure Golf Tourney registration opens at 11:00 a.m. with a scramble shotgun start at 1:00 p.m., immediately followed by hors d’oeuvres during cocktail reception at 6:00 p.m. There will be activities on the course as well as a live and silent auction and raffles. Foursomes as well as individual golfers are invited to sign up. Type One is proud to announce Honey Dew will be a Premier Sponsor again this year and is contributing a number of incredible auction items.

Entertainment

Special Guest Speaker

A special guest speaker,  Dr. Denise Faustman, director of the Immunobiology Laboratory at MGH who oversees the Faustman Lab, will talk about discovering and developing new treatments for type 1 diabetes to supporters during the reception.

Over the past decade, Type One has made an incredible impact toward their mission of funding research to cure type 1 diabetes (T1D) and supporting those in need of help to manage their disease through their Renegade Run Obstacle Course Race. This year’s Par For The Cure Golf Tourney takes the place of the annual obstacle course race which had traditionally been held at Wompatuck State Park and Bare Cove Park in Hingham. To date, Type One Renegade Run events have generated over $100,000 in support of research at the Faustman Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).  The Faustman Lab is focused on discovering and developing new treatments for type 1 diabetes, a vaccine for the reversal of long-term type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune diseases. In addition to supporting the Faustman Lab at MGH, Type One donation and fundraising platforms help provide scholarships to local children with type 1 diabetes to attend type 1 diabetes camp, as well as providing qualifying recipients with assistance for diabetes management and treatment. Senior Remodeling Services – New division of The Remodeling Company caters to residential renovations and additions for aging-in-place

August 13, 2021 //  by admin

The Remodeling Company, a full-service residential remodeling firm serving residents in the Greater Boston area, has announced a new division dedicated to Senior Remodeling Services.

The Remodeling Company specializes in residential remodeling using universal design concepts to create functional, inviting spaces that meet the needs of everyday life while also enabling homeowners to age in place. The new division is led by the company’s founder, Gary Moffie, a Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) and Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) who is also certified by National Association of The Remodeling Industry (NARI) as a Universal Design Certified Professional (UDCP).

Growing older can present a variety of mobility, accessibility, dexterity and cognitive issues. Not only might this be true for people actually living in the home, but it also may be the case for other family members or friends who visit. The Remodeling Company helps homeowners create “living spaces for all” to help them remain in their homes for the long term and make their homes accessible for anyone who visits regardless of age or physical ability.

According to Moffie, who is an authority on how to make a home aging friendly, “Essentially, universal design improves the safety and convenience of daily living while also looking aesthetically pleasing. When we talk about wider doors and halls and adding grab bars, most people will think of an institutional setting (hospital; nursing home), but universal design promotes good design as well as the safety.”

One of the central concepts driven home by the Aging in Place model is the prioritization of fall prevention in remodeling layouts. Renovation examples include living, sleeping and bathroom areas all on a first-floor level; wide doorways and hallways to allow for wheelchairs to pass through; level transitions between rooms; non-slip flooring; ample lighting; and at least one no-stair point of entry to the home. Other remodeling design elements that may be incorporated include curbless showers which allow for easy entry and exit; strategically placed handrails; and drawer style dishwasher, microwave, and dinnerware storage systems.

Enhancing visibility to further promote safety is accomplished by installing effective and reliable lighting inside and outside the home. These fixtures can feature motion sensors and timers which are activated when needed and conserve energy when they are not. Natural lighting may be increased by incorporating extra windows and skylights.

The company also considers challenges pertaining to dexterity in every remodel for aging in place. For example, replacing knobs with lever style handles can make opening and closing doors much more comfortable and they look terrific. Installing light switches, microwaves, and dish drawers at lower heights can significantly increase accessibility. Side-by-side refrigerator and freezer units, front facing laundry equipment, and stoves with front controls also allow for less reaching and easier access.

Aesthetics & Advanced Craftsmanship

The Remodeling Company’s renovations for universal design not only increase safety and convenience, they are also attractively designed. Advanced craftsmanship enables them to incorporate these practical elements in the home to complement and preserve its distinct character and style, while providing easy to navigate living spaces for years to come.

Old Colony Elder Services (OCES), the non-profit agency proudly serving older adults and individuals with disabilities throughout greater Plymouth County, has announced a new Supportive Housing  Program in Easton, MA.

OCES has appointed Jessica Parson as OCES’ new Supportive Housing Specialist. She will be based at the Robert J. Keefe community building on Parker Terrace in Easton. Ms. Parson previously worked at OCES as a Care Manager in the Home Care Program.

Ms. Parson has already planned an ice cream social, sponsored by Senior Whole Health, for supportive housing residents. Additionally, the Easton Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will be starting wellness checks with residents every other week.

The goal of supportive housing is to integrate community resources, information, and services for the individuals who reside at a particular local housing authority site, and essentially to enrich the lives of those residents.

“Supportive Housing Programs are designed to create a community environment which allows residents to age in their community,” explained Elizabeth Weiner, OCES’ Housing Programs Manager who oversees this program along with all of OCES’ other supportive and congregate housing programs. “OCES works with the housing authority in Easton to support both the residents and housing management.”

Through the Supportive Housing Program, a specialist from OCES’ housing team conducts an assessment to determine the specific needs of  residents residing within the Easton Housing Authority. All residents at these sites are eligible for information and referral services, case management assistance, and access to social or educational programs. Emerson Bearing Boston announces dedicated division and expert staff to serve recreational niche market

July 30, 2021 //  by admin

Bearings are a critical component within the recreational industry. Boston-based  Emerson Bearing, a bearing company catering to niche markets nationwide and the sister company of Action Bearing which serves the New England market, announces expert staff dedicated to accommodating the unique bearing needs of recreational vehicles, devices and equipment.

Amusement park rides, golf carts and go-karts, recreational vehicles (RVs), fitness equipment, fishing gear, and ski area equipment require specific types of highly durable bearings that can withstand extreme conditions such as high impact forces, heavy moisture, and abrasion.

Recreational bearing experts

Emerson Bearing provides precise, reliable bearings for everything from go-karts to fishing reels. The company has announced three dedicated staff members who are bearing experts in specific recreational markets:

Richard Furtado oversees Amusement Parks and Golf Carts/Go Karts, Joe Falvey oversees Fitness and Fishing Reels, and Rick Piracini oversees Ski Area Maintenance.

Reliable bearings play a critical role in the safety of various recreational activities. Roller bearings are highly versatile, which makes them well-suited for use in most recreational applications. Depending on the type of roller bearing, they can be used to reduce friction, support radial and axial loads, and cut down on maintenance, repair, and labor needs.

Common recreational equipment and bearings solutions

Amusement Parks – from roller coasters and portable rides to carousels and more, bearings are used in various amusement park attractions. Because these rides are used regularly, day after day, their bearings have to be extremely reliable, as failure can cause injury to people. Ball Bearings help reduce friction, decreasing the risk of wear and tear as well as the financial and temporal costs of maintenance. These qualities make them suitable for use in amusement park rides as well as fitness equipment.

Fitness Equipment – the fitness industry is always experiencing new advancements in equipment. However, regardless of the equipment type, a bearing failure can lead to serious injury. For this reason, it’s essential to choose high-quality bearings that are long-lasting while offering a good price-to-performance ratio.

Golf carts and go-karts are an easy, economical, and environmentally friendly way of getting around environments such as golf courses, country clubs, and more. Many of these carts are used outside; therefore, bearings must be able to withstand a range of weather conditions, including extreme heat, rain, snow, and freezing temperatures. Common solutions include mounted units with triple-lip seals and ball bearings with full contact sealing.

Fishing Reels are cylindrical devices attached to the fishing rods that are used to wind and stow the fishing line. A bearing is a common component of fishing reels. Both its design and the material can affect the performance of the reel. Ceramic bearings are used to keep fishing reels functioning optimally.

Ski Areas – dependability and safety are essential when it comes to bearings used on ski lifts, groomers, and bull-wheels. These bearings have to be able to handle heavy loads and regular use as well as low temperatures and high altitudes. Mounted units are suitable for light-duty and heavy-duty applications, making them ideal for use in skiing environments. Oil seals are particularly essential to the operation of carts and sheave wheels on ski lifts.

To learn more about Emerson’s bearing solutions for the recreational industry, or to request a quote or speak to one of Emerson’s recreational bearing experts, visit EmersonBearing.com or contact 800-225-4587.

The voice of working people reverberates on the new “South Coast Working” podcast launched by the Arnold M Dubin / UMass Dartmouth Labor Education Center.

July 21, 2021 //  by admin

“South Coast Working” is a new podcast and promotes the voice of working people and those who continue to build the South Coast each and every day.  From the docks to the mills to the classrooms to the roadways, working people add a voice and life to the region.

This podcast is developed by the Arnold M Dubin / UMass Dartmouth Labor Education Center.

The first episodes can be discovered at  https://tinyurl.com/communterrail.

South Coast Working was born from the inspiration and motivation of students, staff and faculty of Arnold M. Dubin Labor Education Center, UMass Dartmouth, as well as the adult children and grandchildren for which the Center was named, in order to spread awareness about the challenges facing and opportunities available to members of the workforce in and around South Coast Massachusetts. Through passionate collaboration, it was determined that a podcast would be the most effective and accessible medium to achieve this goal.

The first episode chronicles the long-awaited arrival of commuter rail line infrastructure that will connect New Bedford with Boston – and all of the economic advantages it offers. Recently graduated student journalist, Liz Anusauskas spoke with prominent commuter leaders Siggy Meilus, founder of UMass Dartmouth’s transportation advocacy organization, Bus Riders United and Eric Carvalho, president of Fall River’s Amalgamated Transit Union Local 174. “Our new podcast is intended to inform, entertain and uplift workers from all walks of life and throughout the South Coast,” noted Kim Wilson, Director of UMass Dartmouth’s Arnold M. Dubin Labor Education Center.  “The podcast format is a perfect venue for us to fully explore labor issues and have our audience enjoy and listen when and where they can.  We are excited about our first few episodes and strongly encourage the community to provide suggestions and directions of where the next segments might go.”
