South Coast Improvement, Co. begins final phase of Brookdale Pocasset Bay renovation

May 18, 2016 //  by admin

South Coast Improvement Company (SCI), a design-build general contractor serving New England and the Mid-Atlantic states, recently began the final phase of an exterior renovation at Brookdale Pocasset Bay Assisted Living facility located at 12 Old Pocasset Lane in Johnston, Rhode Island.

The project, which began earlier this year, features renovations to the exterior envelope. This includes new siding, new sheeting, new epoxy on the decks, new paving, new sidewalks and new windows throughout. The anticipated completion date is later in May. The total cost of the renovation is $1.6 million.

“We’re thrilled to head into the home stretch of this important exterior project for Brookdale Pocasset Bay,” said Tom Quinlan, president of South Coast Improvement Company. “What’s most gratifying about this project is that our company did the interior renovation last fall. It’s kind of nice to see the entire renovation unfold.”

Last September, South Coast Improvement Company completed a renovation of common areas spaces on the first floor of the facility. That included renovations of two kitchens, two dining areas, a hair salon, and the public restrooms, as well as new carpeting and paint throughout. The entire renovation cost was $541,000.

“One of the challenges of renovating an occupied building is keeping the impact on day-to-day operations and activities to a minimum,” said Quinlan. , president of South Coast Improvement Company. “By developing a process and through coordination with staff, we can take on renovation projects like these—interior or exterior—and have minimal impact on residents and day-to-day activities.”

Brookdale Pocasset Bay is owned by Brookdale Senior Living Solutions. Brookdale Senior Living Solutions offers assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care, independent Living and Continuing Care Retirement Communities across the U.S. For more information, visit www.brookdale.com.

VoiceNation Announces Innovative Appointment Setting Feature

May 16, 2016 //  by admin

VoiceNation bg-logoVoiceNation, the industry leader in live answering and virtual receptionist services, has recently launched an innovative Appointment Setting feature for new and existing Call Center customers.

VoiceNation’s new feature is ideal for salons, spas, auto service centers and other businesses that schedule appointments for their customers. Now, VoiceNation’s call center clients can further increase their efficiency by having VoiceNation accept calls, take messages and set calendar appointments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

One-Stop-Shop Answering Service & Appointment Setting

VoiceNation’s developers have built a custom, user-friendly calendar application that gives live answering clients complete control over their system. Key features include 24/7 online access for calendar updates and instant notification to email/text for new appointments. Appointment Setting is easy to set up and manage right from the VoiceNation dashboard.

“Our trained operators efficiently handle the time-consuming but necessary task of scheduling appointments, thereby increasing billable hours and enabling business owners to concentrate on the provision of services,” explained Jay Reeder, VoiceNation CEO.

This exciting new feature helps eliminate the service provider’s anxiety over double-booking or missing appointments, or constantly being interrupted to schedule appointments. VoiceNation’s thoroughly trained operators capably handle appointment setting so business owners and their staff can focus on taking care of the customers in their office or store at that moment.

The Appointment Setting feature costs $9.95 a month, in addition to the monthly VoiceNation plan cost.

Reeder continued, “What differentiates VoiceNation’s Appointment Setting feature from competitors is that we offer a less expensive, superior one-stop solution that is directly tied into our answering service and not outsourced to third party providers.”

Plymouth, MA School Superintendent and team to share health and wellness message with students on bike trip from DC to America’s Hometown.

photo of Dr. Gary Maestas

May 16, 2016 //  by admin

photo of Dr. Gary Maestas
Plymouth Superintendent Gary Maestas, Ed.D. on the first DreamRide back in 2011. Dr. Maestas and a group of DREAMRIDERS will embark on DREAMRIDE2 in an effort to raise $100,000 for the Plymouth Education Foundation and to share a health and wellness message to students along the course and back home in Plymouth, MA.

PLYMOUTH, MA…

Can the sequel be better than the original? Plymouth Superintendent Gary Maestas, Ed.D. hopes so. Dr. Maestas and a group of DREAMRIDERs—including Plymouth students, current and former elected officials, local officials from neighboring towns, and citizens—will bike the course of the first DREAMRIDE in 2011, from Washington DC to Plymouth, Mass, in an effort to raise $100,000 in funds and share a health and wellness message with elementary school students.

“We learned quite a bit from the first ride five years ago and received some incredible feedback and suggestions and have incorporated those into DREAMRIDE2,” said Dr. Maestas. “Combine those improvements and the return of key sponsors like SPECIALIZED Bicycles, Serious Cycles, Beth Israel Deaconess-Plymouth, Ai3 Architects, the YMCA, Marty’s Buick GMC Isuzu who is providing the chase vehicle, and a handful of new sponsors and it’s safe to say the sequel will be better. Much better.”

For starters, Dr. Maestas will have a bigger team. Joining him on DREAMRIDE2 and helping him share the health and wellness message will be: AJ Maestas (Gary’s son and student at Babson College); Michelle Badger, Plymouth School Committee member; Sergio Harnais, former Plymouth Board of Selectmen Member; Scott Knief, Superintendent of Carver Public Schools; and Michael Schultz, Athletic Director of Carver Public Schools. Accompanying these riders will be a crew of approximately 12 bicycle mechanics, video and media crew, and support staff from the Plymouth schools. Marc Garrett, a Board Member of the Plymouth Education Foundation who has helped with the planning of the route, will be driving the chase vehicle and Wrestling Brewster, a Plymouth resident, will be driving the media RV.

The most dramatic new wrinkle for DREAMRIDE2, however, is the drawing to give away of SPECIALIZED brand bicycles to a student at every Plymouth elementary school as well as at schools the DREAMRIDE2 Team will be stopping at along the route. To be eligible for the drawing, students must take the DREAMRIDE Pledge (writing their name on a Pledge Card and submitting it to their teacher).

The DREAMRIDE2 pledge is as follows: When faced with a difficult situation, I will stop and think carefully about my options. I pledge to make decisions that will keep me strong, healthy, and happy, both now and in the years to come.

For each stop, there will be a rally, sponsored by Boosterthon Fun Run, where the DREAMRIDE team will talk about health and wellness, overcoming obstacles, staying active and healthy, and following your dreams. Students may participate in some spirit-lifting healthy physical activities and then a winner of a SPECIALIZED bicycle will be drawn.

The DREAMRIDE will be stopping at the following schools and YMCAs: Walter & Betty Ward Family Center Y in Abingdon, MD on June 6; William B. Keene Elementary School in Newark, DE on June 7; Christian Street Y in Philadelphia, PA on June 8; Greater Morristown YMCA in Cedar Knolls, NJ on June 9; Thomas Jefferson School in Morristown, NJ on June 10; Veterans Park Elementary School, in Ridgefield, CT also on June 10; and the South Shore YMCAs in both Quincy and Hanover, MA on June 12. The sponsorship of the Y has been an integral part of the ride as many of the YMCA’s will be providing dinner to the DREAMRIDE2 Team.

In addition to the grand prize winners, the DREAMRIDE2 will also be giving away helmets, Reebok sneakers, and other merchandise.  All entrants will receive a colorful DREAMRIDE2 wristband.

“During the course of the ride, Dr. Maestas and his team will be Skyping with middle school and elementary classes back in Plymouth to share his experiences along the route, talk about how to overcome obstacles in order to achieve your goals, and to answer student questions. There are six Plymouth graduating seniors who will make up the media team providing a video journal of their time on the road and updating the website and social media daily.

The DREAMRIDE2 concludes on June 12 in Plymouth after stops the previous day in Mystic, Connecticut and the State House in Boston on the final day. With the help of Shaughnessy Rentals, the final rally will take place at Plymouth North High School with music, food, a meet & greet with the Plymouth Pilgrims baseball team, a home run derby challenge with the players, athletic demonstrations, and the final giveaway of four more SPECIALIZED bicycles to Plymouth and Carver students at the rally. A very special added component to the final rally is the community donation of used bicycles to Bicycles For Humanity. The community is encouraged to bring any used bicycles to the rally that will be donated to many in developing countries.

“Of course for the DREAMRIDE2 to be better than the original, we have to meet and exceed our fundraising goal of $100, 000,” said Dr. Maestas. “The response from the community and businesses in the area has been tremendous and we feel strongly that we can achieve that goal.”

Proceeds from DREAMRIDE2 will go directly to the Plymouth Education Foundation (www.plymoutheducationfoundation.org), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation that solicits, manages, and distributes funds for educational purposes and activities that may not otherwise be funded. Monies raised by the DREAMRIDE2 will help fund health and wellness programs for students in the Plymouth School District.

For complete information on the DREAMRIDE2, including sponsorship and volunteer information, please visit www.dreamrideplymouth.org or contact Emily Goonan, DREAMRIDE2 Director at (774) 454-8983 or egoonan@plymouth.k12.ma.us.

Old Colony Elder Services’ Nutrition Menu Now Available Online. Special Meals offered in May.

May 12, 2016 //  by admin

OCES logoOlder adults and individuals with disabilities who receive home delivered meals and/or who attend Old Colony Elder Services’ (OCES) Community Dining sites will now be able to learn what’s on the menu simply by visiting the OCES website at www.ocesma.org.

OCES, the non-profit agency serving older adults and individuals with disabilities throughout the greater Brockton and Plymouth county area, has recently added a “Nutrition Menu” link on their website.

Now, home delivered meal recipients and community site diners can view OCES’ Nutrition Menu for the entire month. Each day includes a description of the meal and a listing of calories, sodium and carbohydrate counts. The daily nutrition information listed is for the entire meal, including the protein, starch, vegetable, dessert/fruit, bread, margarine, milk, soup and condiments. All of OCES’ meals are based on a no-added-salt diet for healthy older adults.

OCES’ nutritionist Barbara Nalen-Cardosa, RDN, LDN plans the meals and works with their caterer, Lindley Food Service, to develop the menu. All meals meet one-third of the Recommended Daily Allowance for major nutrients. Cardiac meals are available upon request if a lower salt diet is needed. Therapeutic meals (renal, ground, puréed or lactose-free meals) are also available for Meals on Wheels recipients and may be arranged through an OCES Care Manager. The therapeutic meals are carefully planned to be similar to the regular menu.

The Meals On Wheels program serves adults age 60+ and individuals with disabilities under the age of 60 and is essential for those who would otherwise not get a nutritious daily meal. Older adults who are homebound, unable to prepare meals, manage their grocery shopping or attend one of OCES’ Community Dining Sites may contact OCES to arrange for home delivered meals.

Older adults interested in going out for lunch are encouraged to attend a Council On Aging (COA) Community Dining Site and enjoy delicious meals, social interaction and fun activities.

Special Meals in May at Wareham, Easton and East Bridgewater Community Dining Sites

On May 16, 2016 at the Wareham dining site, an “Independence Day Special” themed cold picnic lunch will be offered, which includes cranberry juice, cold oven fried boneless chicken breast, spinach Mandarin orange salad, potato salad, light Italian dressing, garlic dinner roll and strawberry shortcake.

On May 18, 2016 at the Easton site, the Traveling Chef will serve roast beef, brown wild rice blend, honey glazed carrots, whole-wheat dinner roll and butter, raspberry filled cookies and milk.

On May 19, 2016 at the East Bridgewater site, the themed meal is “Taste Of Italy”, with cannelloni cheese pasta with red sauce, cauliflower and zucchini, baked tomato half, Scali bread and Amaretto mousse with topping.

South Coast Improvement, Co. begins work on L-A-Z-Boy Furniture in North Dartmouth

L-A-Z Boy Furniture in North Dartmouth

South Coast Improvement Company, a design-build general contractor serving New England and the Mid-Atlantic states, recently began a renovation project for L-A-Z-Boy Furniture at 110 Faunce Corner Road in North Darmouth. The two-stage project involves conversion of the store from its current colonial look to the more modern, contemporary décor at newer L-A-Z-Boy locations.

Stage one of the renovation began in March on the left side of the store. A temporary wall was constructed to separate work zone from the other side of the building, where L-A-Z-Boy has remained opened.

The scope of the renovations features new walls, floors, carpeting, lighting, ceiling work and new paint. The previous colors were white to fit the colonial theme. The new more contemporary look features orange, greens and browns.

The first stage of the renovation concluded last month. The second stage will be finished later in May. The entire cost of the renovation is approximately $275,000.

“As a general contractor, we always want a great final result. But what has earned our firm repeat business has been minimizing interruption to everyday operations,” said Tom Quinlan, president of South Coast Improvement Company. “For this first project, we’re looking to show the good people at L-A-Z-Boy why 85 percent of our project are from repeat customers.”

Family Dental Group of Paxton’s Dr. Nikhil Lavana, DMD (r), presents an Oral B Pro 5000 to Cara Benoit. Mrs. Benoit is the first winner of the Family Dental Group of Paxton’s Smiling Neighbor award program.

PAXTON, MA…

Cara Benoit has four young children. By definition that means she has little to no free time. Yet when she saw a friend stricken with cancer, she made the time to help coordinate two fundraisers. For those efforts, she has been named the first winner of Family Dental Group of Paxton’s Smiling Neighbor award.

“The friend in question was the sister of one of our hygienists and I know how touched she was by Cara’s gesture maybe even more than the money raised,” said Dr. Nikhil Lavana, DMD, who owns and operates Family Dental Group of Paxton with his wife Dr. Archana Lavana, DMD. “We created the Smiling Neighbor program to recognize people doing good things in our community. Cara’s act of kindness makes her a very worthy recipient of our Smiling Neighbor award.”

For being selected as the Smiling Neighbor program, Benoit had the choice of either a $50 gift card to Black & White Restaurant in Spencer, MA or an Oral B Pro 5000 complete with Bluetooth timer, four different brush heads, charger and a travel case; a $250 value). She chose the toothbrush.

“This was quite an unexpected surprise,” said Benoit. “We have been going to Family Dental Group for years, largely because it does feel more like family than a trip to the dentist. I’m honored to be the first Smiling Neighbor.”

The Smiling Neighbor award will be given out on a quarterly basis to citizens of the greater Paxton area going above and beyond the call of duty for their fellow citizens. People can nominate a Smiling Neighbor by sending an e-mail of 200 words or less to officemanager@paxtondentist.com. Please remember to include your name and telephone number as well as the name and telephone number or e-mail of the person they are nominating. Nominations can also be sent to Family Dental Group of Paxton, 581 Pleasant Street, Paxton, MA  01612.

TIC’s radio receiver was installed at Proprietors Green. Jim Bunnell, TIC’s Executive Director completed the installation and spoke to staff and residents about the TIC reading program. He also demonstrated how to use the radio and how to review the daily schedule.

TIC’s mission is to provide human voice(d) broadcasts to visually impaired and otherwise disabled listeners throughout Massachusetts to promote independence and enrich quality of life. Approximately 10,000 people turn 65 every day in the U.S. and in Massachusetts, 34 percent of people with disabilities are 65 and older.

Bunnell continued, “TIC has thousands of blind/visually impaired listeners statewide, yet there is a broader audience who can benefit. There are a growing number of seniors seeking informational, entertaining broadcasts that just aren’t available elsewhere, and that’s where TIC comes in.”

Senior living communities may arrange for TIC’s specially tuned radio receiver to be installed on-site by calling TIC at (781) 834-4400. For more information about TIC’s programming, visit www.ticnetwork.org.
