Old Colony Elder Services’ Nutrition Menu Now Available Online. Special Meals offered in May.

May 12, 2016 //  by admin

OCES logoOlder adults and individuals with disabilities who receive home delivered meals and/or who attend Old Colony Elder Services’ (OCES) Community Dining sites will now be able to learn what’s on the menu simply by visiting the OCES website at www.ocesma.org.

OCES, the non-profit agency serving older adults and individuals with disabilities throughout the greater Brockton and Plymouth county area, has recently added a “Nutrition Menu” link on their website.

Now, home delivered meal recipients and community site diners can view OCES’ Nutrition Menu for the entire month. Each day includes a description of the meal and a listing of calories, sodium and carbohydrate counts. The daily nutrition information listed is for the entire meal, including the protein, starch, vegetable, dessert/fruit, bread, margarine, milk, soup and condiments. All of OCES’ meals are based on a no-added-salt diet for healthy older adults.

OCES’ nutritionist Barbara Nalen-Cardosa, RDN, LDN plans the meals and works with their caterer, Lindley Food Service, to develop the menu. All meals meet one-third of the Recommended Daily Allowance for major nutrients. Cardiac meals are available upon request if a lower salt diet is needed. Therapeutic meals (renal, ground, puréed or lactose-free meals) are also available for Meals on Wheels recipients and may be arranged through an OCES Care Manager. The therapeutic meals are carefully planned to be similar to the regular menu.

The Meals On Wheels program serves adults age 60+ and individuals with disabilities under the age of 60 and is essential for those who would otherwise not get a nutritious daily meal. Older adults who are homebound, unable to prepare meals, manage their grocery shopping or attend one of OCES’ Community Dining Sites may contact OCES to arrange for home delivered meals.

Older adults interested in going out for lunch are encouraged to attend a Council On Aging (COA) Community Dining Site and enjoy delicious meals, social interaction and fun activities.

Special Meals in May at Wareham, Easton and East Bridgewater Community Dining Sites

On May 16, 2016 at the Wareham dining site, an “Independence Day Special” themed cold picnic lunch will be offered, which includes cranberry juice, cold oven fried boneless chicken breast, spinach Mandarin orange salad, potato salad, light Italian dressing, garlic dinner roll and strawberry shortcake.

On May 18, 2016 at the Easton site, the Traveling Chef will serve roast beef, brown wild rice blend, honey glazed carrots, whole-wheat dinner roll and butter, raspberry filled cookies and milk.

On May 19, 2016 at the East Bridgewater site, the themed meal is “Taste Of Italy”, with cannelloni cheese pasta with red sauce, cauliflower and zucchini, baked tomato half, Scali bread and Amaretto mousse with topping.

The Nutrition Menus are now published on OCES’ website, as well as in local newspapers and COA newsletters. For more information call 508-584-1561 or visit www.ocesma.org.

South Coast Improvement, Co. begins work on L-A-Z-Boy Furniture in North Dartmouth

May 9, 2016 //  by admin

L-A-Z Boy
L-A-Z Boy Furniture in North Dartmouth

South Coast Improvement Company, a design-build general contractor serving New England and the Mid-Atlantic states, recently began a renovation project for L-A-Z-Boy Furniture at 110 Faunce Corner Road in North Darmouth. The two-stage project involves conversion of the store from its current colonial look to the more modern, contemporary décor at newer L-A-Z-Boy locations.

Stage one of the renovation began in March on the left side of the store. A temporary wall was constructed to separate work zone from the other side of the building, where L-A-Z-Boy has remained opened.

The scope of the renovations features new walls, floors, carpeting, lighting, ceiling work and new paint. The previous colors were white to fit the colonial theme. The new more contemporary look features orange, greens and browns.

The first stage of the renovation concluded last month. The second stage will be finished later in May. The entire cost of the renovation is approximately $275,000.

“As a general contractor, we always want a great final result. But what has earned our firm repeat business has been minimizing interruption to everyday operations,” said Tom Quinlan, president of South Coast Improvement Company. “For this first project, we’re looking to show the good people at L-A-Z-Boy why 85 percent of our project are from repeat customers.”

Based in Marion, Mass., South Coast Improvement Co is a recognized leader in providing building and renovation services to a client base of senior living, healthcare, institutional and retail clients. For more information, please call 508-748-6545 or visit www.southcoastimprovement.com.

Family Dental Group of Paxton’s Dr. Nikhil Lavana, DMD (r), presents an Oral B Pro 5000 to Cara Benoit. Mrs. Benoit is the first winner of the Family Dental Group of Paxton’s Smiling Neighbor award program.

PAXTON, MA…

Cara Benoit has four young children. By definition that means she has little to no free time. Yet when she saw a friend stricken with cancer, she made the time to help coordinate two fundraisers. For those efforts, she has been named the first winner of Family Dental Group of Paxton’s Smiling Neighbor award.

“The friend in question was the sister of one of our hygienists and I know how touched she was by Cara’s gesture maybe even more than the money raised,” said Dr. Nikhil Lavana, DMD, who owns and operates Family Dental Group of Paxton with his wife Dr. Archana Lavana, DMD. “We created the Smiling Neighbor program to recognize people doing good things in our community. Cara’s act of kindness makes her a very worthy recipient of our Smiling Neighbor award.”

For being selected as the Smiling Neighbor program, Benoit had the choice of either a $50 gift card to Black & White Restaurant in Spencer, MA or an Oral B Pro 5000 complete with Bluetooth timer, four different brush heads, charger and a travel case; a $250 value). She chose the toothbrush.

“This was quite an unexpected surprise,” said Benoit. “We have been going to Family Dental Group for years, largely because it does feel more like family than a trip to the dentist. I’m honored to be the first Smiling Neighbor.”

The Smiling Neighbor award will be given out on a quarterly basis to citizens of the greater Paxton area going above and beyond the call of duty for their fellow citizens. People can nominate a Smiling Neighbor by sending an e-mail of 200 words or less to officemanager@paxtondentist.com. Please remember to include your name and telephone number as well as the name and telephone number or e-mail of the person they are nominating. Nominations can also be sent to Family Dental Group of Paxton, 581 Pleasant Street, Paxton, MA  01612.

TIC is a non-profit reading service, which broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to thousands of visually impaired and otherwise disabled listeners.

TIC’s radio receiver was installed at Proprietors Green. Jim Bunnell, TIC’s Executive Director completed the installation and spoke to staff and residents about the TIC reading program. He also demonstrated how to use the radio and how to review the daily schedule.

TIC’s mission is to provide human voice(d) broadcasts to visually impaired and otherwise disabled listeners throughout Massachusetts to promote independence and enrich quality of life. Approximately 10,000 people turn 65 every day in the U.S. and in Massachusetts, 34 percent of people with disabilities are 65 and older.

Bunnell continued, “TIC has thousands of blind/visually impaired listeners statewide, yet there is a broader audience who can benefit. There are a growing number of seniors seeking informational, entertaining broadcasts that just aren’t available elsewhere, and that’s where TIC comes in.”

Lapels Dry Cleaning kicks off annual clothing drive to benefit Big Brother/Big Sister on May 7.

Lapels Dry Cleaning's drive to benefit Big Brother/Big Sister begins May 7
Lapels Dry Cleaning’s drive to benefit Big Brother/Big Sister begins May 7

HANOVER, MA …

Lapels Dry Cleaning will host their clothing drive to benefit Big Brother/Big Sister organizations starting May 7 and running through May 22. Lapels Dry Cleaning stores in Arizona, Connecticut, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, and New Jersey will be accepting clothing donations during this time period.

“Lapels customers have always been very generous in donating clothing to our drive to benefit Big Brother/Big Sister. Last year was our best year ever as we collected more than 11,000 pounds of clothing—that’s the equivalent of $11,000,” said Kevin Dubois, CEO of Lapels Dry Cleaning. “Clearly, we are very grateful to everyone who donates to this drive. Still, in our fourth year, it would be nice to push beyond 11,000 pounds and break 12,000 for a very worthy cause.”

Lapels customers and the general public are welcome to donate any gently used clothing items, including:  Men’s, Women’s and Children’s clothing, coats, jackets, shoes (any season or size). Household items such as linens, sheets, blankets, towels, drapes, comforters, afghans, curtains, fabric and purses are also accepted.

Clothes collected by Lapels Dry Cleaning will be donated to Big Brother/Big Sister and in turn will then be sold by high-end thrift stores. The net proceeds from those sales are donated to Big Brother/Big Sister mentoring programs for young girls and boys.

“Our annual clothing drive is something our customers look forward to because it kills two birds with one stone. On one hand, they get to help a very worthy cause raise money without it costing a dime out of their pocket. On the other hand, they’re removing unwanted items from their home. It’s the proverbial win-win,” said Dubois.

For the addresses of Lapels Dry Cleaning stores near you, please visit www.mylapels.com.

Lapels Dry Cleaning – Environmentally Friendly Cleaners

John Shea, producer at Talking Information Center reading service for the visually impaired (right) with Boston Mayor Martin Walsh and runners Sarah Dever and her sighted guide Sammie Nunziata of Team With A Vision during Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired Volunteer Appreciation Brunch.

Thousands of visually impaired listeners were able to tune in and get up-close and personal with Team With A Vision runners and their sighted guides at the 2016 Boston Marathon via the Talking Information Center (TIC) non-profit reading service’s live radio broadcast of the event.

TIC producer John Shea took listeners from the Hopkinton starting line to the finish line of the 120th running of the Boston Marathon in a narrative of the race that included interviews with Boston Mayor Martin Walsh and a number of Team With A Vision runners.

Team With A Vision is comprised of runners with visual impairment and their sighted guides who take part in events all around the country to raise funds and awareness for the Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (MABVI). This year marked Team With A Vision’s 24th year running the Boston Marathon. According to Team With A Vision’s Boston Marathon page, the group has raised more than $137K, and all funds raised support MABVI’s statewide network of vision rehabilitation services.

Shea discussed some of the challenges of the race with Team With A Vision member John Chan, a visually impaired runner from Staten Island, NY who has run in more than 40 marathons and was running for the second time with Team With A Vision.

“The biggest thing would be just the obstacles along the course, which are potholes, curves and turns, and there’s train track in some parts of it too… If it wasn’t for the guide, I wouldn’t be able to run it efficiently,” explained Chan.

To hear the personal stories of Team With A Vision runners and learn more about the challenges, their goals and how they communicate with their sighted guides during the race, tune in to TIC’s Mission Possible archived segment from April 18th: http://ticnetwork.com/audio/wire/mission.htm.

About MABVI

The Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (MABVI) is the oldest social service agency in the country providing services to individuals who are blind or visually impaired. ELERTS Corp., a leading provider of emergency communication mobile apps, announced that its Event Alert communication system will be used to enhance safety at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester (BGCD).

DORCHESTER, MA and WEYMOUTH, MA…

ELERTS Corp., a leading provider of emergency communication mobile apps, announced that its Event Alert communication system will be used to enhance safety at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester (BGCD).  Staff at all three locations will have access to the ELERTS app, which enables them to immediately alert Boston Police, BGCD staff and administrators about safety and security concerns.

“Child safety has always been our number one concern. Part of that commitment is looking to the latest advances in technology to provide an even safer environment. The ELERTS app represents an advance that will help us communicate better in the event of an emergency, to protect our children, staff and facilities,” said Bob Scannell, President and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester.

In the event of a safety or security concern, the ELERTS app will enable staff members at all three Club locations to send and receive alerts on their smartphones and computers. Situation awareness improves when details about an incident can be immediately shared with staff and police. Reports may include a description of the issue, photos, video, and a GPS map, pinpointing the problem area. The app being provided by ELERTS will also enable Medical Emergency and Missing Person reporting.

“Ease of use is a cornerstone of ELERTS Event Alert app—by tapping a few buttons on your smartphone you can report a safety incident, suspicious behavior or an emergency. Information is provided immediately to others in the facility and to local police. This situation awareness helps people better respond to an incident,” said Ed English, CEO of ELERTS Corp. “For the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester, the ability to issue alerts about an emergency situation in real time provides a timely advantage should assistance be needed.”

The ELERTS app will be available to staff at all Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester locations: Paul R. McLaughlin Youth Center at 1135 Dorchester Avenue; Colonel Daniel Marr Boys & Girls Club at 35 Deer Street; and Walter Denney Youth Center at Harbor Point Apartment Complex, 270 Mount Vernon Street.

ELERTS safety communication apps are used by K-12 schools, colleges and universities, medical centers and hospitals, corporate facilities and other organizations. A similar ELERTS app is used by major transits, including the MBTA in Boston, the MARTA in Atlanta and BART in San Francisco.  By enlisting app users to report security concerns, ELERTS app acts as a force multiplier for police and security teams.
