April 28, 2023 //  by admin

Finn O’Gara

MARSHFIELD, MA… Finn O’Gara, a senior at Marshfield High School, has been named the  Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield’s 2023 Youth of the Year.

“Youth of the Year” is the highest honor bestowed upon Boys & Girls Club members. A Youth of the Year candidate embodies the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s three priority outcome areas of Academic Success, Good Character and living a Healthy Lifestyle. The National Youth of the Year serves as a role model and spokesperson for America’s youth. They educate millions of Americans about the power of the Club Experience and elevate the national focus on key issues facing children and teens.

“We were very impressed with all of our Youth of the Year finalists and recognize their dedication, efforts and leadership,” said Jim Bunnell, CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield.

This year, the Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield had 10 individuals nominated for Youth of the Year. Of those 10, seven accepted their nomination and six wrote anonymous essays on how the Club has impacted them. The leadership team determined four finalists based on those essays: Matt Roosevelt, Caitlin Scully and Finn O’Gara of Marshfield and Mike O’Malley of Duxbury. The finalists were interviewed by a panel of community and board members including Jeanine Smith, Mike Vercollone, Peter Brown and John Wilpers. The panel had the difficult decision of determining the 2023 Youth of the Year. Based on many factors and with much deliberation, they unanimously selected O’Gara.

O’Gara has been working at the Boys and Girls Club since 2021 in both the After School program as After School Staff and in the Summer Camp program as Camp Counselor. He also works at the Club as an evening and weekend Front Desk Attendant for birthday and Clubhouse party option rentals.

In the fall, O’Gara will be attending Bridgewater State University and majoring in Special Education.

The National Youth of the Year is purpose-driven and aware of the challenges facing young people today. Under the direction of Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) staff, O’Gara along with other Youth of the Year representatives will attend state, regional and national events. They will serve as thought leaders on key issues by telling their inspiring personal stories. Potential audiences include youth, alumni, members of the media, and political, corporate and community leaders.

“Finn is a terrific role model with outstanding leadership ability,” said Bunnell. “We’re pleased to honor Finn as the Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield’s 2023 Youth of the Year and we wish him every success in the future.”

About Youth of the Year Program

April 25, 2023 //  by admin

BROCKTON, AND PLYMOUTH, MA…More than 75 Belair residents attended the “March for Meals” Caribbean lunch at Belair Tower in Brockton, where meals were served by special guests Senator Michael Brady, Mayor Robert Sullivan from the City of Brockton and Minhtram Tran, Chief Legal Counsel for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion from the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office.

The luncheon, held in March and led by the Nutrition Team at Old Colony Elder Services (OCES) of Brockton, put the focus on the Meals on Wheels and Community Dining Program by directly sharing the impact of the nutritious meals locally. The event highlighted the significance of funding for the program in order to maintain and expand the program for consumers facing food insecurity.

March for Meals is part of Meals on Wheels America’s national campaign. The month of March is when the Meals on Wheels network joins forces to celebrate “March for Meals” which recognizes the historic day in March of 1972 when President Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act (OAA) of 1965 to include a national nutrition program for seniors 60 years and older. For more than 50 years, the OAA has been the foundational source of federal funding for senior nutrition programs across the country, which collectively delivers more than 247 million meals to 2.8 million seniors annually.

Meals on Wheels is part of OCES’ Nutrition Program. OCES has over 550 volunteers in their Nutrition Program delivering over 2,000 “Meals on Wheels” nutritious meals a day to homebound recipients living within 23 communities in greater Plymouth County. In May, the Nutrition Program will launch a pilot to offer home delivered Caribbean meals in Brockton.

TELL US YOUR RETIREMENT DREAMS—OR NIGHTMARES

April 4, 2023 //  by admin

This new South Shore Senior News monthly column explores the next big step—or misstep.

By Steven V. Dubin

At age 67, I bump into old friends and colleagues and invariably the first thing they say – after telling me how great I still look, of course – is “Are you retired yet?”

Do I look that tired?  That successful?  I’m not sure what to make of that question.  Or how to answer it.

You may or may not as well.  I encourage fellow readers of South Shore Senior News to respond and add to our monthly exploration of this new monthly column titled “Retirement Dreams or Nightmares?”

We’d like to share the secrets of your retirement success.  Or failures.  Or refusal to retire at all.

In running a “lightly used” public relations company based in beautiful downtown Plymouth, I am torn.  I really love the work our 4-person staff does each day.  There are no simple answers.  We solve a new puzzle each morning – attempting to win hearts and minds for clients.  Not any easy task, but wonderful at it unfolds.

But I have FOMO – Fear of Missing Out.  Should I be traveling, fine-tuning my pickleball game, micromanaging my children’s lives?

Or take one from column A and another from column B?  Work a little, play a little?

Maybe you’ve completely left the workforce and are entirely happy being a nuisance at your local health club.  Or you meet the gang twice a week for coffee.

On the other hand, perhaps you gave your notice on Friday and begged for your job back on Monday.

Or maybe you just love what you do and refuse to leave until the authorities come for you.

Your thoughts and comments can provide insight for us all.

I look forward to hearing from you, our readers! Please email me at SDubin@PRWorkZone.com
