“It’s not you, it’s me” …Why breaking up has gotten easier.

April 14, 2009 //  by admin

NORWELL, MA…

In 2009, there are now more ways for couples to get together than ever before—online dating, speed dates, chat rooms, blogs, etc. Yet, with all the new ways and technologies available to help singles meet, it has also made it that much easier to break up with the person you are casually dating. And with all due respect and copyright to Seinfeld’s George Costanza, you don’t need the “it’s not you, it’s me” to get out of a relationship.

Paul A. Falzone, CEO of The Right One and Together Dating–one of the world’s largest brick-and-mortar dating services with more than 60 offices nationwide—has paired thousands of clients during more than 35 years in business. He has also seen more than his fair share of matches not go the distance as well. So, is breaking up with somebody easier now?

Said Falzone, “Yes. Though it’s really not about being easier as much as being up front with people. If you have invested time and money in a dating service or online account, you generally have a pretty good idea about what you want. If dating somebody for a short period doesn’t produce that, most people feel they owe it to themselves to end things and that makes it easier to be direct and say ‘I don’t see this going anywhere’ instead of using a lame excuse.”

Continued Falzone, “Does that mean breaking up with somebody doesn’t hurt. Not at all. Even if you look at it intellectually, it is still a form of rejection, even on a smaller level. So, even though you may have met online and agree, you still should be sensitive to the other person.”

Here are some guidelines Falzone recommends in ending things amiably:

●        Stay away from “it’s not you, it’s me” and other clichés – Most people will take the “it’s not you, it’s me” as “it’s all you”. So, just do not use it. If you are not feeling the relationship is going or can go anywhere, just say that. It leaves you both with your dignity.

●        Avoid e-mail and text – Sure, it is easier and safer and spares you the hurt look you might see. Do not do it. Even if you write a polite and courteous note, think about how you would feel receiving it—especially in that form.

●        Do not say you will call or stay in touch if you will not – Really, all that’s left to say is it was nice meeting you (if it actually was) and best of luck. Unless you really want to remain friends.

●        Remain on the high road, even after you break up – Don’t bad mouth or talk derogatively about some one you broke up with to friends, family or other people you know whose paths that person might cross. Even if it was things about his or her personality you did not like, it truly will become about you if you are trashing them after the breakup.

●        Be honest but diplomatic – Being honest does not mean being unkind. Remember the old motto, if you cannot say something nice…

Said Falzone, “What you absolutely don’t want to do in any breakup situation is play the blame game. Because in actually, when you decide to breakup with somebody, it really is more about you than the other person. And that is okay to be a little selfish. It’s all part of finding the right one for you, which is a good thing.”

Divorced and getting back in the dating game…How and when to play.

March 20, 2009 //  by admin

NORWELL, MA…

Going through a divorce is not a life experience you wanted, but it happens. Now, after licking your wounds, you’re ready to get out there. For many, it’s not that easy. It could have been years, even decades since you last actively sought a date. So, where do you start?

Paul A. Falzone, CEO of The Right One and Together Dating–one of the world’s largest brick-and-mortar dating services with more than 60 offices nationwide—has paired hundreds of newly divorced clients during his quarter of a century in business. He’s also been divorced himself and happily remarried now for __ years.

“When you’re newly divorced, it seems everybody either has a friend they want to set you up with or words of advice or a little pep talk to get you back out there. The truth is, only you can know when you’re ready to start dating. That’s why it’s really important to take some time, think and get a sense of where you are emotionally first before you start dating—particularly if it’s been a very long time since you’ve dated,” said Falzone.

For starters, Falzone recommends:

●        Going slow – perhaps it’s a cliché, but a divorce is a life-altering event and you do need some time to heal.

●        Avoid the bar scene – Getting out with friends and co-workers as a way to re-enter the social scene but don’t do it as a way to meet potential dates.

●        Get fit – Being ready to date again means feeling good about yourself. Starting an exercise program or going to a gym can begin that process of feeling good about  you again.

●        Be wary of dating at work – it’s natural for you to be close to people you work with, particularly if they’ve helped you through a tough time. Just be careful before entering into a relationship or even dating somebody at the office.

●        Networking – While being set up might not be your idea of getting back into the dating game, if you’re looking it couldn’t hurt to let people in your social or professional network know that you are interested in meeting new people.

●        The ex – It’s safe to say that dwelling on the ex will not do much good in dating new people. Just remember that you’re dating again for you, not to get back at him/her or to find somebody before he or she does.

●        Take your time before introducing your dates to friends and, especially family – if you think your divorce is an adjustment for you, it’s also one for family, friends and your children. Wait before introducing your date to them, especially the children.

●        No overnight guests – If you have children, wait a significant amount of time before having any overnight guests—at least until your date is something more serious and has had a chance to form some kind of a relationship with your kids.

“Getting back into the dating game doesn’t have to be scary. It can actually be an exciting time of your new life but you want to do it for the right reasons and be able to enjoy it,” said Falzone. “Take it slow, be open and upbeat, and you can find love again.”

“It’s great to be excited about somebody after a first date. What’s even better is to be even more excited after two. If’ your goal is for something lasting, there’s nothing wrong with taking it slow and making sure it really is, pun intended, the right one for you,” said Falzone.

After a messy break-up with your significant other months ago, your best friend finally talked you into joining an online dating service. Now that you’ve registered, completed a brief questionnaire and submitted your most recent photo, you’re excited about meeting someone new.

At first glance, you’re impressed with the profiles of several attractive, successful singles. But, what your friend failed to tell you is that what you see online, isn’t always what you get in person.

According to Paul A. Falzone, CEO of The Right One and Together Dating, the largest brick-and-mortar dating service in the world, “Online dating sites are used by the honest and dishonest alike. Men and women use the anonymity of the Web to lie about their age, appearance, name and even gender. For example, cheating spouses will use online dating sites to hook up with someone when they go out of town. It’s important to be aware of the perils of online dating before you get burned.”

Falzone alerts online daters of the red flags which signal potential dates to avoid:

R U free 2nite? The “texter” who has a few seconds to send text messages, but is always too busy or not available to actually chat on the phone or via email. This type likes communication to be kept to a minimum, unless s/he initiates it. Dates are often made and cancelled at the last minute with a variety of excuses used. S/he is often out of town a lot and inaccessible. These are common signs of someone who is not single and/or not being honest with you. Move on. You can do much better.

Beauty or beast? Beware of dishonesty through photo misrepresentation. Note that a good profile usually provides more than one photo of that person. If the photo looks too professional, chances are, it is – and perhaps even “borrowed” from somewhere else. And yes, there are people who deliberately post their high school photo from 15 years ago to attract your interest.

Think you hit the jackpot when you get a nice response with a good-looking photo? One of the ways competing online dating sites draw you in is by responding to you with profiles of “beautiful people” from another dating site. After you’ve clicked over to that site and signed up to meet that gorgeous creature, oftentimes you’ll find they don’t even exist. Save your time and money by responding to those who are members of your dating site.

Little lies. So you recently arranged to meet that single, 6’4”, trim and muscular, brown-haired former college basketball captain whom you found online. Upon meeting in person, you find out that the only thing true in his description of himself was his hair color. Some believe that telling “little lies” on their profile with regard to a couple inches in height or a couple pounds in weight won’t matter. Be aware that those who misrepresent themselves on the “little things” may have no problem lying about “bigger things” such as their marital status and age. Don’t settle for what you read in a profile. Verify the information they have offered by asking about their age, relationship status, height and weight. They may refuse to answer your questions or they may provide different information. Or, everything may measure up. Regardless, you’ll have a better idea of that person’s honesty and whether or not you really want to meet him/her.

The “put down”. Avoid the online profile that disrespects and rips an ex-lover to shreds or simply informs you of those aspects s/he doesn’t want in a date. For example, “looking for someone without issues – unlike my fat, drunk ex.” Or, “if you’re needy, jealous and selfish, look elsewhere”. These are profiles that signal potential anger issues. Statements such as these come from someone who has recently ended a relationship or is emotionally scarred from a past relationship and really not happy. Leave them be. You don’t need to be their sounding board or rebound date. They’re not ready to date now and won’t be until they can move on.

Will you get a second date?…How the follow-up call can open door wider or slam it shut.

March 5, 2009 //  by admin

NORWELL, MA…

So, you’ve gone out on your first date with somebody you just met. It went pretty well.  Perhaps even very well. So, now what? The follow-up call can be the determining factor on whether a second date or more occurs.

Paul A. Falzone, CEO of The Right One and Together Dating–one of the world’s largest brick-and-mortar dating services with more than 60 offices nationwide—has given follow up advice to hundreds of clients before and after first dates.

“A good first date—or even a great one—doesn’t always mean there will be a second one. That’s why it’s best after that first date has gone well to take a step back and evaluate before taking the next step, the follow up call,” said Falzone. “And when you do follow up with your date, you want to be clear in your own mind that: A. you want a second date and (b) they want a second date and conduct the conversation accordingly.”

Some follow-up call guidelines include:

●        Let it breathe – Wait a minimum of 24 hours before calling after the first date. If it truly was a great date, he or she won’t be with somebody else if you wait a day before calling.

●        Email and texting counts – A post-date e-mail or text might seem harmless, but it really does interfere with the evaluation process. The follow-up call should actually be a phone call.

●        Not at the office – Make sure you make your follow-up call at a time when your date is available to talk.

●        At the sound of the tone – Be prepared to leave a voice mail in case he or she is not available. Keep it simple, don’t try to make a second date via voice mail. Just ask them to call.

●        Two strikes rule – Call once and he/she doesn’t return the call, shame on them. Call more than twice without a return, shame on you.

●        Keep it light – The gist of the follow-up call should be that you had a great time and ask if he/she wants to it again. Even if you spent the nice tossing and turning over what a great time you had, do not share that. Those make for great stories down the road. Get the second date first.

“It’s great to be excited about somebody after a first date. What’s even better is to be even more excited after two. If’ your goal is for something lasting, there’s nothing wrong with taking it slow and making sure it really is, pun intended, the right one for you,” said Falzone.

No recession on love – Internet dating executives report increased revenues and membership numbers

February 19, 2009 //  by admin

NEW YORK, NY

When members of the Internet Dating Executive Alliance (IDEA) met last month at the Miami Internet Dating Conference (InternetDatingConference.com) the economy was a popular topic of discussion. Yet unlike the doom and gloom you might hear at conferences for any other industry, much of the talk centered on how numbers across the board are holding or are up for Internet dating sites– in spite of the economy.

Hitwise Competitive Intelligence reports that the Internet dating industry gained 12 percent more site visits in 2008 over 2007.  The peak period for Internet dating sites is November through Valentine’s Day each year.  Hitwise reports that the top 100 dating sites gained two percent more site visits for the three-month period of November 2007 to January 2008 versus November 2008 to January 2009.  Free dating sites gained 55 percent more visits in the same period.

For example:

●        Plentyoffish.com – the top ranking free dating site – U.S. traffic is up 33% since August; two billion monthly page views.

●        Match.com – 22% more paying memberships in December 2008 vs. December 2007

●        PerfectMatch.com – Q4  2008 revenues increased 42% over the prior quarter.

●        WorldSingles.com – network of niche dating services that includes Arablounge.com, EligibleGreeks.com and IranianPersonals.com – 10% increase in sales from Q4 2008 compared to Q4 2007.

●        TogetherChrisitan.com – “paying sign-ups” increased 23.8% from August 2008 to January 2009.

●        Meet Market Adventures – activity-based social networking site – up more than 60% since August 2008, both in new member sign-ups and attendance for the site’s 200+ events.

●        WhiteLabelDating.com – vast network of niche dating brands – 23.25% increase in site traffic from August 2008 to present; 76.3% increase in membership over the last two months; January 2009 revenue 73.48% higher than August 2008.

●        EasyDate.biz – BeNaughty.com and 200+ dating brands – revenue is up 107% in 2008.  Revenue rose 18% from Q3 to Q4 2008.

Eat your heart out…Capture your Valentine’s heart with a home-cooked meal

February 9, 2009 //  by admin

NORWELL, MA…

Flowers, candy and cards. While this may be the big three on Valentine’s Day, having a romantic meal at your sweetie’s favorite restaurant ranks right up there, too. The crunch of the current economy has many couples opting to eat in on Valentine’s Day. According to love expert Paul A. Falzone, CEO of The Right One and Together Dating–one of the world’s largest brick-and-mortar dating services with more than 60 offices nationwide—that doesn’t necessarily mean romance has to take a backseat.

“Cooking a romantic meal for your loved one can be every bit as romantic as going out. In fact, if you put some imagination into it, staying home for Valentine’s Day can put some extra spice into your relationship,” said said Falzone.

So, what can you do for a Valentine’s Day meal at home? Falzone offers some of the following suggestions:

●        Surprise your partner with breakfast in bed. Even a morning cup of coffee served with toast cut into heart shapes can be a gourmet meal when served in bed.

●        Dress up for your Valentine’s Day dinner. Just because you’re not going out, doesn’t mean you can’t have a formal dinner, complete with soft music in the background, candlelight, etc. Being at home also makes it easier to slip into something more comfortable later.

●        Adorn the table with rose petals leading a path to your Valentine’s Day card and/or gift.

●        Buy a bottle of his/her favorite wine and have it chilled (if white or blush) in a bucket at the table. Better yet, have champagne on the table.

●        Serve the aphrodisiac of your choice as an appetizer: chocolate, oysters, caviar, honey or strawberries.

●        Cook your partner’s favorite dish for dinner; if you don’t cook, most grocery stores have pre-cooked meals that simply need to be reheated.

●        Pick out a dessert for your partner, and vice versa, and feed it to them with their eyes closed.

●        Buy your significant other’s favorite massage oil and give him/her a foot and/or body rub to close out the “date”.

“There are many advantages to staying in on Valentine’s besides giving your bank account a break. Most obvious, without the distractions that going out on a Saturday night, the day/night can really be about you and your partner. And that’s truly what the holiday was meant to be about,” said Falzone.

Internet Dating Executives Form Alliance

February 6, 2009 //  by admin

NEW YORK, NY…

Executives from online dating services throughout the world have formed the Internet Dating Executive Alliance (IDEA).

IDEA’s membership, by invitation only, consists of executives from a veritable who’s who in the international Internet dating world: eHarmony, Match, Plentyoffish, The Right One and Yahoo Personals. Twenty-three of the top 25 U.S and 17 of the top 20 U.K. dating brands have executive members. The Alliance has 226 members and meets twice annually to learn and share thoughts on how to collectively improve the Internet dating industry.  The group meetings are at the Miami Internet Dating Conference in January and then at the London Internet Dating Conference in September.  More than 45 people attended the last meeting in Miami on January 21, 2009.

“We’re all in the business of love, and we’re competitors. But how the dating industry behaves and is perceived as a whole affects us all. That’s why IDEA was formed, so that we can meet, talk, learn and share ideas for the betterment of our industry,” said Mark Brooks, editor of OnlinePersonalsWatch.com and the IDEA group organizer.

IDEA hosts a private online community on Linkedin. Some future initiatives under consideration include are an Internet Dating Newswire, the Online Personals Annual Awards, a Scammer Watch Service and an industry Gold Standard and Credo

“It’s really been exciting to watch IDEA grow from an ‘idea’ to what it is now. We’re particularly enthused about the establishment of a Gold Standard to be issued to sites that offer impeccable service. This will help consumers immeasurably in making wise selections on which Internet dating sites to patronize,” said Brooks.

Rent a romantic Valentine’s Day.

January 25, 2009 //  by admin

 NORWELL, MA…

Dinner and a movie. It makes for a great date night any day of the year, but can be even more special on Valentine’s Day. Unfortunately, with times being tough for many, the luxury of a night out might not be an option this year. According to love expert Paul A. Falzone, CEO of The Right One and Together Dating–one of the world’s largest brick-and-mortar dating services with more than 60 offices nationwide—a candlelit dinner at home followed by a romantic movie can be just the ticket for couples feeling the sting of the recession.

“Valentine’s Day is not about who spends the most, but spending time with your loved one. And with the selection of the right movie, that quiet night at home can be even more special,” said Falzone.

With the advent of online movie rental services, you can pretty much have your pick of Hollywood’s all-time romantic movies. On Falzone’s must-see, Valentine’s Day list are:

●        An Affair to Remember (1957), starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr

●        Love Actually (2003), starring Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson

●        Moonstruck (1987), starring Cher and Nicolas Cage

●        Officer and a Gentlemen (1982), starring Richard Gere and Debra Winger

●        Sleepless in Seattle (1993) starring Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan

●        Casablanca (1942), starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman

●        Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard

●        It Happened One Night (1934), starring Clark Gable, Claudette Colbert

●        Love Story (1970), starring Ryan O’Neal and Ali MacGraw

●        Romeo and Juliet (1968), starring Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey

“These movies can make for a great matinee and set the tone for the day, or a nice way to relax and enjoy the end of your romantic evening,” says Falzone. “Regardless of what you watch, what really matters is who you’re watching it with.”
