Apollo Safety joins forces with Fall River Chamber to help veterans find work; kicks off campaign at Chamber after hours on Aug. 27

Apollo Safety, Inc. a veteran-owned, Fall River, Mass.-based company specializing in safety products and services, recently announced collaboration with the Fall River Chamber of Commerce to help local veterans find employment. The joint effort, called “Commitment to Valor—Jobs for Heroes”, challenges to Fall River area business owners to commit to interviewing/hiring two or more veterans by the end of 2014.

Commitment to Valor – Jobs for Heroes is loosely based on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s “Hiring 500,000 Heroes”. The first registration drive for this campaign will be held on August 27, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at a Fall River Area Chamber of Commerce after hours at BayCoast Bank at 300 Swansea Mall, Swansea, MA.

“As Americans, I believe that we hold a civic responsibility to aid these heroes by providing job opportunities upon their return from honorable service,” said John V. Carvalho III, president of Apollo Safety, Inc. “Not only is it our duty to provide re-entry opportunities for these brave men and women who fought for our freedom and liberty but provide them guidance and feedback along the way.”

Adds Carvalho, “It is sometimes challenging to re-acclimate or return into a job place that is far less regimented than the military. If we look at how these fine women and men were trained to perform with such precision and detail, we can understand why someone coming into a job with far less organization is a challenge. If we embrace their experience and create the systematic organization in our businesses for them to prosper, it will benefit the entire organization and our society as a whole.”

Fall River area business owners interested in taking part Commitment to Valor – Jobs for Heroes can RSVP to attend the after hours by contacting Arthur Pacheco at 508-676-8226 or apacheco@fallriverchamber.com. Business owners can also register online at http://tinyurl.com/pwk3wz8 .

In addition to collaborating on the Commitment to Valor – Jobs for Heroes, Apollo Safety offers a military internship program for U.S. military veterans and active members of the reserves from all four branches of the military.

The military internship opportunity lasts 90 days, with salary based on skill level and experience. After 90 days, program graduates will receive Apollo Safety’s certificate and employment opportunities with the company will be considered.

To apply for the military internship program, interested parties should send a resume and cover letter to John V. Carvalho III, Apollo Safety, Inc., 57 Walnut Street, Fall River, MA  02780. Resumes and cover letters can also be e-mailed to John@apollosafety.com.

It’s time for commercial. The argument grows for laws requiring carbon monoxide monitoring at commercial entities

February 26, 2014 //  by admin

John V. Carvalho III, president of Apollo Safety, Inc.
Apollo Safety, Inc. President John C. Carvalho III.

FALL RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS…

A carbon monoxide leak in the heating system at a Legal Sea Foods in Huntington Station, New York resulted in the death of a restaurant manager, the hospitalization of another staff member and the need for 26 patrons to be treated at a local hospital. While some states do have laws requiring commercial entities to have carbon monoxide detection systems, those regulations only apply to businesses where the customers sleep, e.g. hotels, nursing homes, universities, etc.

“The reality is that it doesn’t take much of a leak to have an impact,” said John V. Carvalho III, president of Apollo Safety, Inc., a veteran-owned, Fall River, Mass.-based company specializing in safety products and services. “Complicating matters even more is that everyone reacts differently to carbon monoxide. Some people fall ill or experience in a fairly short amount of time. For others it can be longer. As was the case at the restaurant, it doesn’t take overnight exposure to carbon monoxide for it to be lethal.”

Carvalho recommends that any commercial or residential building using fossil fuel sources such as oil, propane, and natural gas be equipped with a carbon monoxide detector in the basement or boiler room. He cites this as particularly necessary for heating systems that employ elbow-shaped pipes.

“Elbow pipes can be particularly dangerous when there’s a leak because the shape of the pipe will actually slow the flow of the carbon monoxide and create much greater exposure than a straight pipe,” said Carvalho.

In terms of the types of systems commercial businesses should choose that can vary on the size of the building, the number of people in that building at a given time, etc.

“It’s conceivable that a smaller business could get by with a store-bought, battery-operated carbon monoxide detection system that you would have in your home,” said Carvalho. “Yet when you consider the potential risks and the devastating impact one incident can have on a business—even with no fatalities–it just make sense to take that extra precaution for your customers and staff .”

Apollo Safety’s offerings include a wide variety of portable and stationary gas detection systems suitable for large universities, including name brands like Industrial Scientific, RAE Systems, RKI, and GMI. Apollo Safety launches wastewater division

December 12, 2013 //  by admin

FALL RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS…

Apollo Safety, Inc. a veteran-owned, Fall River, Mass.-based company specializing in safety products and services, recently announced the formation of a special division to serve wastewater treatment facility clients. The new division will feature extensive offerings for wastewater treatment facilities as it pertains to gas detection equipment, maintenance and monitoring.

“By their very nature, wastewater treatment plants require special precautions. For starters, we are talking about a confined space that has daily exposure to chlorine gas as part of the drinking water treatment and hydrogen sulfide on the waste treatment side. With our special division, we can offer a greater level of service for wastewater treatment facilities so they can proactively address the risks they face on a daily basis,” said John V. Carvalho III, president of Apollo Safety, Inc.

Those offerings include a wide variety of portable and stationary gas detection systems suitable for wastewater treatment plants, including name brands like Industrial Scientific, RAE Systems, RKI, and GMI. These systems are available for purchase or rental at weekly or monthly rates. Rental equipment is certified to NIST standards and is guaranteed for the entire rental period.

In addition, Apollo Safety also provides on-site installation and training and 24/7 service. All Apollo Safety technicians are factory-trained and certified. In addition, Apollo offers its own training program, with five levels of certification. Apollo Safety technicians must be Level II or higher to service a wastewater treatment gas detection system.

“The advanced training our technicians receive provides an added level of safety and security for our clients,” said Carvalho. “Because of the training our techs receive, they can spot potential problems much sooner than techs without that training. That extra level of training can mean averting a major problem before it has the potential to become a tragedy. Or diagnosing a minor problem as part of a regular maintenance check that undetected could end up being a $4,000-5,000 repair.”

Apollo Safety provides service in a “state of the art” in-house service center, as well as offering on-site support with factory-trained technicians for both portable and stationary gas detection systems. Apollo Safety expands fire department services division

November 12, 2013 //  by admin

John V. Carvalho, President & CEO Apollo Safety

FALL RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS…

Apollo Safety, a veteran-owned, Fall River, Mass.-based company specializing in safety products and services, recently announced an expansion of its fire department services division. That expansion will include extended offerings as it pertains to gas detection equipment and training.

“The tragedies of 9/11 and the recent Boston Marathon bombing jolted the general public’s awareness of the wide variety of dangerous situations first responders like firefighters and EMTs can face. It goes way beyond the perception of rescuing cats from trees and putting out small house fires,” said John V. Carvalho III, who along with his wife Tracy opened Apollo Safety back in 1995. He added, “It’s because of the extraordinary circumstances that firefighters face that we have increased our product and services offerings and added dedicated sales reps and customer service personnel specifically trained to serve fire safety professionals.”

From a product standpoint, Apollo Safety offers safety equipment and clothing ranging from eye and face protection to flame resistant rainwear/suits and headwear to footwear. That also includes hazardous storage and handling equipment, ARC safety equipment, janitorial supplies and more.

The cornerstone of the expansion will be gas detection systems. Apollo Safety offers a wide variety of portable and stationary gas detection systems—Industrial Scientific, RAE Systems, RKI, and GMI. In addition to selling gas detection systems, Apollo Safety provides on-site installation and training and 24/7 service. Gas detection systems are available for purchase or rental.

“The key part to our expanded services is evaluation and recommendation. Our technicians and sales staff have the experience to assess the specific needs and requirements of a facility and recommend the appropriate solution in terms of gas detection systems,” said Carvalho.

Apollo Safety provides service in a “state of the art” in-house service center, as well as offering on-site support with factory-trained technicians for both portable and stationary gas detection systems.
