“Correctional facilities and other houses of incarceration have many specific needs and budgetary constraints that can often make the already difficult jobs they have to accomplish even more challenging,” said John V. Carvalho III, president of president of Apollo Safety, Inc. “The new division will help us better serve our existing correctional facility customers and market to other facilities that need better gas detection systems and maintenance programs.”

Apollo Safety’s offerings include a wide variety of portable and stationary gas detection systems suitable for large universities, including name brands like Industrial Scientific, RAE Systems, RKI, and GMI. Hear the beep where you sleep. Some alarming facts for National Fire Prevention Week.

September 24, 2015 //  by admin

FALL RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS…

The National Fire Protection Association’s National Fire Prevention Week takes place this year from October 4 to 10. As a company that specializes in safety products and services, Apollo Safety, Inc. is getting the word out early on how to prevent fires in the home and business.

“According to the National Fire Protection Association, the folks who put on National Fire Prevention week, an average of eight people died per day due to home fires in 2013. Eight a day is a staggering statistic and it is eight too many,” said John Carvalho, president of the Fall River, MA-based Apollo Safety. “The shame of that figure is how many of those deaths are preventable, particularly the ones from smoke inhalation where a proper alarms and training alarm could have alerted residents so they could at least get out of the home.”

The numbers certainly back up that claim. Again according to the National Fire Protection Association website, three out of five home fire deaths in 2007-2011 were caused by fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

Having a working smoke alarm does reduce the risk of dying in reported home fires by half, but lack of maintenance of those alarms creates further risk. In fires considered large enough to activate the smoke alarm, hardwired alarms operated 93 percent of the time, while battery powered alarms operated only 79 percent of the time. When smoke alarms fail to operate, it is usually because batteries are missing, disconnected, or dead.

“It’s one of the reasons we started selling batteries for that very reason,” said Carvalho. “Too often people will buy a detection system for their home and then forget about it. Or, when it comes time to replace the batteries, they don’t have any on hand and, consequently, the batteries aren’t changed in a timely fashion. That’s why Thanksgiving or when we change the clocks to or from daylight savings has caught on as a semi-annual reminder to change your batteries.”

Additionally, Apollo Safety’s offerings include a variety smoke and gas detection systems suitable for a residence, large apartment buildings and other commercial properties. These systems are available for purchase at www.apollosafetyproducts.net.

Apollo Safety also provides on-site installation and training and 24/7 service for commercial, industrial and educational facilities. All Apollo Safety technicians are factory-trained and certified. In addition, Apollo offers its own training program, with five levels of certification.

Batteries can be included. Apollo Safety introduces batteries offering.

FALL RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS

Apollo Safety, Inc., a veteran-owned, Fall River, Massachusetts-based company specializing in safety products and services, recently began selling batteries as part of its safety product offerings.

“We have customers who invest a fair amount of money in their carbon monoxide and other gas detection products but often don’t keep a supply of batteries on hand to ensure those devices—detection systems and handheld devices—are working at all times,” said John Carvalho, founder and president of Apollo Safety, Inc. “We began offering batteries so that our customers could stock up rather than waiting for the batteries to run out and then, ultimately, heading down to the local pharmacy or grocery store and paying more.”

Carvalho noted that many people are hesitant to buy more than a pack or two of batteries at a time for fear the batteries will lose their power if not used by a certain time.

“Batteries, just like a gallon of milk or any number of food products, come with expiration dates,” said Carvalho. “As long as you store the batteries correctly, they should last as long as the expiration date says.”

The range of battery life can vary, anywhere from five to 10 years depending on the model. Batteries should be kept in a reasonable cool environment, away from heat and humidity.

“Some people store batteries in the refrigerator. That may be a tad extreme, but keeping batteries at temps between 40 and 50 degrees will help. Extreme temperatures in either direction can shorten their shelf life,” added Carvalho. “You also do not want to store different types of batteries together. For example, mixing AAs and AAAs in a draw together will lessen their life expectancy.”

Apollo Safety introduces parking garage service

April 15, 2015 //  by admin

John V. Carvalho III
John V. Carvalho III

FALL RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS…

Apollo Safety, Inc., a veteran-owned, Fall River, Massachusetts-based company specializing in safety products and services, recently launched a detection service for parking garages and other enclosed areas that house vehicles.

“In Massachusetts, state law requires that smoke detection systems for parking garages be checked four times per year and carbon monoxide detectors be checked once per year,” said  John Carvalho, founder and president of Apollo Safety, Inc. “Other than these inspections, some parking garages do not check their systems at all and that can make the lot owner vulnerable to much more than a failed inspection.”

As part of the service, Apollo Safety will inspect carbon monoxide detection systems. That inspection includes recalibration. The service also includes inspection of the facility with a handheld, wireless detection device to ensure that areas of the garage not near detection devices have safe levels as well.

Apollo Safety’s offerings include a wide variety of portable and stationary gas detection systems suitable for all detection, including name brands like Industrial Scientific, RAE Systems by Honeywell, RKI Instruments, MSA, Detcon, Scott and GMI. Apollo Safety also offers portable gas monitors for rental at weekly or monthly rates. Equipment is calibrated to NIST standards.

Carbon monoxide a risk with secondary heat sources

February 17, 2015 //  by admin

John V. Carvalho, President & CEO, Apollo Safety
John V. Carvalho, President & CEO, Apollo Safety

FALL RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS…

Things like kerosene heaters, gas-fueled generators and other backup heat sources can be huge difference makers during the inclement currently weather underway in the northeast. Unfortunately for many consumers, these backup plans come with a number of carbon monoxide risks if not used properly.

“When there’s a nor’easter, it’s cold, snowing and you’ve lost power, all you’re thinking about is staying warm without thought of the possible dangers,” said John Carvalho, president of Apollo Safety, Inc., a veteran-owned, Fall River, Mass.-based company specializing in safety products and services. “Sadly, you hear of a number of tragedies nationwide about people getting sick or worse from carbon monoxide caused by generators and backup heat sources.”

When using a generator, Carvalho cautions consumers to use outdoors only in a completely open and dry area, positioned away from vents, windows and doors to prevent carbon monoxide from entering the home. He also advises plugging appliances directly into the generator. For providing power to items within the home, use a heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cord.

The cold winter weather also prompts homeowners, apartment dwellers and even workers at some places of business to seek out secondary heat sources. Carvalho notes that some of these can also produce carbon monoxide and be risky to those nearby. Specifically, he cites kerosene heaters as an effective secondary heat source that comes with potential risk.

“When using a kerosene heater you do need to provide it with adequate fresh air. You want to avoid closing yourself up in a single room with a Kerosene heater, keep adjacent rooms, and doors open,” said Carvalho. “If your house is very air tight –most newer homes are–you need to crack open a window, maybe leave a flue open on your fire place if you have one, this creates a natural draw, continuously circulating fresh air.”

Adds Carvalho, “The law in Massachusetts says you need to have carbon monoxide detectors on floors where there’s a bedroom. This will not protect you if you’re not on a floor with a detector. And if you’re in a place of business where detectors are not required, you need to be even more careful that the room where you are using your heater has a flow of fresh air.”

Apollo Safety’s offerings include a wide variety of portable and stationary gas detection systems suitable for large universities, including name brands like Industrial Scientific, RAE Systems by Honeywell, RKI Instruments, and GMI. Apollo Safety also offers portable gas monitors for rental at weekly or monthly rates. Rental equipment is calibrated to NIST standards.
