DirectBuy of Tinley Park

A kitchen cabinet makeover for under $20.

June 3, 2010 //  by admin

CHICAGO, GURNEE, HOFFMAN ESTATES, NAPERVILLE, TINLEY PARK, IL …

When it comes to improvements to your home, replacing your kitchen cabinets is one project that offers the best return for investment dollars at resale. For many, the price of new cabinets may not be in the budget. Nevertheless, if you want to give your kitchen a bit of a new look and would prefer not to paint, bleaching your kitchen cabinets offers a cost-effective alternative.

“Bleaching your kitchen cabinets gives them a bit of an old world look,” said I.J. Sell, owner of DirectBuy of Tinley Park. “This aged, rustic design is often part of Tuscan kitchen decor and works well with wrought iron and ceramic accessories.”

With just a few supplies, you can transform run-of-the-mill cabinetry into a unique work of art. Most supplies for this project can be purchased at your local home improvement store. Then it’s just a matter of following some simple steps:

  • Cover any areas that you don’t want bleached (cabinets or otherwise). Newspaper should suffice.
  • While wearing gloves, pour a gallon of household bleach into a clean bucket, then dip a sponge into the bleach. Wring out the sponge so that it is damp, but not dripping. You can also use commercially prepared wood bleach for this project.
  • Apply the bleach to a small area of your cabinets that’s out of sight. This will be your test area. If you like the look, apply to the rest of your cabinets. Be careful not to saturate any area too much to avoid streaking.
  • Allow the bleach to dry completely, then lightly sand the cabinets with fine-grade sandpaper. Wipe off any dust and residue with a clean cloth.
  • Finally, apply a coat of clear polyurethane sealer with a paint roller or paintbrush and allow it to dry completely.

“Bleaching your cabinets can create an entirely new look for your kitchen in just a few short hours,” said Sell. “Just remember to take the proper precautions when working with bleach. Wear goggles and gloves to protect your eyes and skin and open a window or vent so the bleach smell doesn’t overwhelm you.”

How to make “top shelf” office space out of your closet.

January 20, 2010 //  by admin

CHICAGO, GURNEE, HOFFMAN ESTATES, NAPERVILLE, TINLEY PARK, IL …

In the corporate world, if they ask you to move your office to the closet, it’s probably not a good sign for your long-term future with the company. If you find yourself working from home, however, converting a closet into a home office can be an effective and economical use of space. With five locations throughout greater Chicago, DirectBuy, the leading home improvement and furnishings club, has some helpful tips on converting a closet into a functional home office.

“Whether you work out of your home or not, nearly everyone has some semblance of office space in their home,” said I.J. Sell, owner of DirectBuy of Tinley Park. “By converting the closet in the guest room or in the basement, you can maintain that room’s primary function while giving yourself or other family members more than adequate office space.”

So, how do you convert a closet into functional office space? For starters, clear everything out of the closet, including clothes, rods, and shelves. Next, take precise measurements of the space, making note of wiring and lighting. Depending on your particular space and what’s available, you may also need to consider the following:

  • Installing an electrical outlet within the closet if none are nearby. Make sure you install enough to accommodate a computer, lighting, a printer and other office necessities.
  • Installing a jack for either an Ethernet or DSL line to connect to the Internet. If possible, and to save yourself installation costs, it may be more affordable to buy a wireless router and purchase a laptop with a wireless card.
  • Painting the closet walls will make it seem more like a room and less like a closet. Lighter colors can make your workspace seem bigger than it is.
  • Installing shelves that will function as a desktop that’s the width of the closet and long and deep enough to give you space to either write or work at your computer. You may also want to consider installing additional shelves for storage purposes.
  • Purchasing small file cabinets on wheels for storage underneath your work area.

“One of the downsides to working at home is you essentially never leave the office,” said Sell. “By converting your closet, you can literally close the door on work for the day. You can even put a lock on it for added security and to remove the temptation to work during off hours.”

DirectBuy offers nearly everything you need for your home office—at wholesale prices direct from the manufacturers and their authorized suppliers. In addition, DirectBuy also employs product specialists and designers if your home improvement project is a bit more than you want to take on or you don’t have the time.

For more than 38 years, DirectBuy clubs have offered members the opportunity to enjoy enormous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products, flooring and accessories by purchasing from over 700 brand name manufacturers and their authorized suppliers. With several convenient locations in greater Chicago (Chicago, Gurnee, Hoffman Estates, Naperville, and Tinley Park), consumers can enjoy a comfortable, country club setting, where they finally have the financial control of buying direct.

How to save energy (and dollars) this winter

January 6, 2010 //  by admin

CHICAGO, GURNEE, HOFFMAN ESTATES, NAPERVILLE, TINLEY PARK, IL …

Winter in greater Chicago means spending a good portion of your time indoors. And while you want to keep your home warm, comfortable and cozy, that can run up quite a tab for your heating and electricity costs. As the leading home improvement and furnishings club, DirectBuy, with several locations in greater Chicago, has some helpful tips on heating your home more efficiently and keeping your electric bills in check.

“It goes without saying that during these tough economic times, homeowners want to save wherever possible,” said I.J. Sell, owner of DirectBuy of Tinley Park. “What’s amazing is that just by following a few simple steps, you can reduce your heating and electric bills significantly.”

Here are few things homeowners can do:

  • Set the thermostat no higher than 68 degrees when you are home, lowering the temperature at night and when you’re out.
  • Reverse the direction of your ceiling fans and run at a slow speed. This creates a gentle updraft and re-circulates the warmer air trapped at the ceiling to provide even, comfortable heat throughout a room.
  • On sunny days, open the shades and curtains on the side of your home facing the sun to take advantage of the heat benefits. Make sure to close the shades and curtains at night for the opposite reason.
  • Be wary of blocking your radiators or heating vents with furniture or drapes. To maximize heat from your radiator, place a sheet of aluminum foil between the radiator and the wall to reflect heat back into the room.
  • Replace all the lights in your high-traffic areas with compact fluorescent light bulbs. Replacing 25 percent of your lights with these bulbs can reduce your lighting expenses by 50 percent.
  • Weatherize your home by caulking and weather-stripping all doors and windows. Be sure to lock your windows to make them tighter and draft-resistant.

“There are few things more brutal than a Chicago winter. Yet by following some or all of these simple steps, you can keep your home comfortable and manage to save a bit on your heating and electric bills,” said Sell.

For more than 38 years, DirectBuy has offered members the opportunity to enjoy enormous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products, flooring and accessories by purchasing from over 700 brand-name manufacturers and their authorized suppliers. Calumet City resident Belinda Skarwecki celebrates 35 years with DirectBuy of Tinley Park

October 19, 2009 //  by admin

TINLEY PARK, IL…

Before Belinda Skarwecki started working as a bookkeeper for DirectBuy in 1974, the world was a different place. Richard Nixon had yet to resign from office. Not everybody had a color television. There was still no such thing as a free agent in baseball. Yet in celebrating her 35th anniversary with DirectBuy, Skarwecki knows that one thing still holds true: the numbers don’t lie.

“As a bookkeeper, the numbers must always add up. So even though it might not feel like 35 years, the calendar tells me otherwise,” said Skarwecki.

Skarwecki began with DirectBuy while still in high school, working as an assistant to the company’s bookkeeping department at the previous location in Calumet City. Under the tutelage of the company’s bookkeeper at the time, she acquired a skill that’s served her well over 35 years.

In fact, Skarwecki’s longevity with the company is only trumped by DirectBuy of Tinley Park Owner Ed Sell—even topping the service time put in by Ed’s wife I.J., who started with the company 29 years ago. “We hit it off right from the beginning,” adds Skarwecki.

Ms. Sell concurred, “We look at Belinda as a member of our family who also happens to do our books. That’s the kind of relationship we have and we’re very thankful to have her with us.”

That loyalty has been repaid by both sides as Skarwecki remained with the company when it relocated from Calumet City to its current location at 18400 S. 76th Avenue in Tinley Park, Illinois. And when a back condition limited her traveling ability, she and I.J. arranged for her to work from home.

“You don’t spend 35 years of your life with a company for no reason. Ed and I.J. have been wonderful to me and it’s very gratifying to see how the company has grown over the years and how many lives it’s been able to positively impact,” said Skarwecki. “I’m looking forward to many more years with DirectBuy.”

Skarwecki still resides in Calumet City with her husband Marvin.

The leading home improvement and furnishings club with direct insider prices, DirectBuy of Tinley Park Estates offers manufacturer-direct pricing on products ranging from light fixtures to televisions to kitchen cabinets, all from more than 700 manufacturers and their authorized suppliers. DirectBuy also offers design, delivery and installation services.

Crete resident receives DirectBuy’s Success Circle honors

August 28, 2009 //  by admin

TINLEY PARK, IL…

Crete resident Earl Patterson, a membership director at DirectBuy of Tinley Park, was recently awarded Success Circle honors by DirectBuy’s corporate offices for his dedication to helping introduce new families to DirectBuy club memberships during the month of May.

DirectBuy’s Success Circle recognizes the top performing membership directors and phone room associates at more than 160 DirectBuy clubs across North America for their performance on a monthly basis. As a membership director, Patterson is responsible for presenting the DirectBuy opportunity to prospective members, conducting tours of the DirectBuy of Tinley Park club and answering questions prospective members might have prior to making their decision.

“Earl has achieved Success Circle 19 times during his DirectBuy career. That doesn’t happen by accident. He not only is good at what he does, but deeply believes in what DirectBuy offers our members,” said I.J. Sell, owner of DirectBuy of Tinley Park, located at 18400 South 76th Avenue Suite B.

Patterson began with DirectBuy of Tinley Park in 2002. Yet his history with DirectBuy goes back to 1983 when his parents joined the club as members.

“Unlike a lot of my peers, I grew up with DirectBuy and paying insider prices so I literally have a lifetime of experience to share with potential members on why buying this way enables you to live better and stretch your hard-earned dollars farther. So, it really doesn’t feel like I’m selling, but sharing my firsthand experience,” said Patterson.

Since 1971, DirectBuy clubs have offered members the opportunity to enjoy enormous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products and accessories by buying wholesale, directly from the manufacturer. With several convenient locations in the greater Chicago area (Chicago, Gurnee, Hoffman Estates, Naperville, and Tinley Park), consumers can enjoy a comfortable, country-club setting, where they finally have the financial control of buying direct.

Manteno resident receives DirectBuy’s Success Circle honors

August 17, 2009 //  by admin

TINLEY PARK, IL…

Manteno resident Liana Dieball, a membership director at DirectBuy of Tinley Park, was recently awarded Success Circle honors by DirectBuy’s corporate offices for her dedication to helping introduce new families to DirectBuy club memberships during the month of May.

DirectBuy’s Success Circle recognizes the top performing membership directors and phone room associates at more than 160 DirectBuy clubs across North America for their performance on a monthly basis. As a membership director, Dieball is responsible for presenting the DirectBuy opportunity to prospective members, conducting tours of the DirectBuy of Tinley Park club and answering questions prospective members might have prior to making their decision.

“Liana has achieved Success Circle 11 times during her DirectBuy career, not to mention many other recognition honors. She’s a dedicated professional who walks the talk and, like these accolades indicate, is very good at showing prospective members how DirectBuy can change their lives for the better,” said I.J. Sell, owner of DirectBuy of Tinley Park, located at 18400 South 76th Avenue Suite B.

Dieball first began with DirectBuy of Tinley Park in 2001. She left the company in 2003 to pursue a career as a counselor for troubled youths. Dieball returned in 2006 and the rest, as they say, is history.

“I really enjoy helping people and that’s driven my career choices. While what we do here at DirectBuy is a bit different than the work I’ve done as a counselor, we do help people by showing them a different way to shop,” said Dieball. “With a DirectBuy membership, you metaphorically have the power to buy a Mercedes for the price of a Chevy. When you look at it that way, it makes it a pleasure to bring this opportunity to as many people as possible.”

For more than 38 years, DirectBuy clubs have offered members the opportunity to enjoy enormous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products and accessories by purchasing from over 700 brand-name manufacturers and authorized suppliers. Taking your cabinets to the cleaners…DirectBuy locations in and around Chicago provide tips on caring for your wood cabinetry.

July 9, 2009 //  by admin

CHICAGO, GURNEE, HOFFMAN ESTATES, NAPERVILLE, TINLEY PARK, IL …

Short of building an addition on your home, replacing or refacing your kitchen cabinets is one of the more expensive remodeling projects you can undertake. So, the upkeep of your cabinets on a day-to-day basis is an important factor in protecting your investment. The DirectBuy club locations of greater Chicago, the leading home improvement and furnishings club with direct insider prices, have some helpful tips on protecting that investment with regular cleanings.

“Many people make the investment in wooden kitchen cabinets and then either go overboard cleaning, use the wrong type of cleaners, or don’t clean enough,” said I.J. Sell, owner of DirectBuy of Tinley Park. “It really doesn’t take much effort or know-how to keep your new cabinets looking new.”

Typical cleaning can be done with a clean, damp cloth as long as you dry thoroughly. For stains, clean your wood cabinets with an emulsion-type cleaner (e.g. Murphy’s Soap). Avoid using wax polishes with petroleum solvents as these can result in wax buildup. Not to mention that petroleum solvents are also flammable and toxic if swallowed. Same goes for wax polishes with silicones, which can also harm the cabinet’s wood.

Moisture is an enemy of wood cabinets, so you’ll want to wipe up spills as they occur. Also, pay special attention to the areas around the kitchen sink and dishwasher, two areas prone to moisture. Be sure not to drape damp kitchen towels over the sink basin so that any part of the cloth rests on the wood. This can cause permanent damage if you’re not careful.

For your cabinets’ hardware, mild soap and water should be used to clean drawer knobs and pulls. Polishes for the knobs or lubricants for the drawers typically aren’t necessary. Just be sure to dry thoroughly with a clean cloth as, once again, water is the main foe in sustaining the beauty of your cabinetry.

“According to Remodeling magazine, new kitchen cabinets have an ROI of nearly 80 percent at resale. That’s a greater return on your investment than any other indoor remodel,” said Sell. “By simply making a point to keep your cabinets clean and dry and swiftly clean spills and stains, you can maintain that value for years to come.”

How do you like your pizza cooked– rare, medium or well done?….Outdoor pizza oven adds pizzazz to outdoor kitchen.

June 21, 2009 //  by admin

CHICAGO, HOFFMAN ESTATES, NAPERVILLE, TINLEY PARK, IL …

Over the last few years, ‘outdoor kitchens’ have taken cooking on the grill from a summer activity to a year-round thing. Now, outdoor cooking has evolved from burgers, dogs, steaks and other carnivorous delights to pizza. That’s right, according to the DirectBuys of Greater Chicago, the leading home improvement and furnishings clubs with direct insider prices, adding a pizza oven has become the latest trend in outdoor kitchens.

“Pizza is a pretty big deal here in the Chicago area. After all, it’s the home of the deep dish pizza. So it’s not surprising that some people have decided to take their love of cooking in the great outdoors step further by adding a pizza oven to their outdoor kitchens,” said Jeremy Vest, owner of DirectBuy of DuPage County.

For those who may not have the budget for a pizza oven, you can create your own by purchasing a simple pizza stone. Place that over your grill/fire pit area and you’re ready to serve up your family’s favorite pizza with the extra fun of an outdoor pizza cookout. Or, you can host your own “make your own pizza” night outdoors.

DirectBuy sells many of the items and accessories you’ll need to create your outdoor pizza kitchen at manufacturer’s low prices. In addition, DirectBuy also employs product specialists who can provide helpful pointers on selecting the right equipment and setup for your home.

For starters, when it comes to selecting a grill, DirectBuy recommends considering:

●       Stainless steel gas or charcoal grills – outdoor kitchen means just that: outside sun, rain, wind and in some markets, snow. Even covered, your grill will be exposed to the elements to a certain degree and you want a grill made of material that will withstand bad weather and corrosion.

●       Free-standing or under-the-counter refrigeration units – help minimize trips to the “other” kitchen and give you a place to store leftovers for the next cookout.

●       Infra-red burners – make sure the grill you do select uses infra-red burners, which heat up faster.

●       Storage – choose a grill with plenty of shelving and cabinets

“Whether you’re cooking pizzas or the standard barbecue fare, the beauty of the outdoor kitchen is that it reduces trips to the real kitchen to get supplies. This means you can actually spend time with your guests while preparing your meal,” continued Vest. “By adding something novel like a pizza oven or quasi pizza oven, you’re adding to the ways you can get more use and enjoyment out of your outdoor kitchen.”
