A bathroom refresher…Mini-makeovers for the bath

January 25, 2011 //  by admin

CHICAGO, GURNEE, NAPERVILLE, TINLEY PARK, IL …

One of the many euphemisms for bathroom is “the necessary.” That perhaps explains the mindset of many homeowners and why, short of a total remodel, they do very little with the décor and design of their bathrooms over the course of a year. The bathroom might just be the one room that’s easiest to make over and make an impression with—without making a huge impression on your bank account.

“Even if you have a large bathroom, chances are it’s smaller than most rooms in your home,” said Jeremy Vest, owner of DirectBuy of DuPage County. “What that means is that even something as simple as a fresh coat of paint or some wallpaper can make your bathroom look like new.”

Some of the bathroom “touch ups” Vest recommends includes:

  • Putting a coat of fresh, new paint or textured wallpaper on the walls.
  • Changing an outdated sink and vanity with a new and beautiful pedestal sink.
  • Repainting or replacing bathroom cabinets.
  • Installing new flooring with something timeless like marble mosaics.
  • Updating and improving lighting with new, energy efficient sconces.

“The beauty of these upgrades is that you don’t need to be Mr. or Ms. Home Improvement to take these projects on and that saves you the cost of hiring someone to do it,” said Vest. “Couple the nominal investment needed for these improvements with the dramatic impact each can have on your bathroom and you’ve got a win-win.”

DirectBuy Club offers home furnishings and merchandise in addition to items for home improvement projects to help all homeowners brighten up their homes all year round—at direct insider prices. DirectBuy also employs product specialists and designers, so if you need some assistance in selecting products or taking on a home improvement project, you have seasoned professionals at your service.

A kitchen remodel light…Kitchen makeover “effect” for less than $1,000

November 30, 2010 //  by admin

CHICAGO, GURNEE, NAPERVILLE, TINLEY PARK, IL …

Most astute homeowners know that a kitchen remodel is the one home improvement project that comes close to paying for itself at resale. It’s also one of the more expensive home improvement projects you can undertake. There are, however, some modest improvements homeowners can make for less than $1,000 that can make a kitchen look brand new.

“There are some people who spend high five figures on kitchen remodels and the results are amazing,” said Jeremy Vest, owner of DirectBuy of DuPage County. “Yet if your budget isn’t quite that big, smaller improvements can also create a significant upgrade without a major dent in your bank account.”

Vest recommends the following:

  • Adding a backsplash – Whether it’s a bright color or interesting pattern, a backsplash can transform the feel and style of a kitchen. For the average kitchen, that could mean purchasing as little as 20 square feet of tile.
  • Replace fixtures – Replacing your current drab fixtures with glass or ceramic knobs or pulls can add elegance and style to your kitchen. The best part? These are fairly easy to install on your own and you can do it in less than an hour.
  • Kitchen sink – The sink is more of a focal point in the kitchen than you think. Replacing a worn faucet head with a shiny new head polishes off a kitchen with new sophistication. It’s not too difficult to find an entry level faucet in a variety of styles for under $150.
  • Flooring – While most may consider this an expensive undertaking, refinishing a hardwood floor can be completed in less than two days at a reasonable cost through sanding and refinishing. Likewise, if you have tile or ceramic, professionally cleaning and sealing is affordable and can bring an old floor back to life.
  • Changing lighting fixtures – A lighting fixture can transform a kitchen and there is no end to the options and price points for a new chandelier, sconce or fixture. Please consult an electrician if you have no experience with wiring lights.

“As a rule, kitchens seem to draw a crowd and, consequently, show wear and tear a little sooner than most homeowners would like,” said Vest. “By undertaking one or more of these improvements you can capture the effect of remodel without the cost.”

Blackhawks fans prepare man caves for October 7 opener of the 2010-11 NHL season.

October 4, 2010 //  by admin

CHICAGO, GURNEE, NAPERVILLE, TINLEY PARK, IL …

For members of the Chicago Blackhawks, preparation to defend their Stanley Cup championship in the 2010-11 season means several weeks of intense practice in training camp. For Blackhawks fans, getting ready for the upcoming season means preparing their “man caves” for several months of equally intense NHL hockey viewing.

In your dad’s day, the “man cave” was the workshop in the garage. Today, it’s typically a finished room in the basement where the man of the house might work out, have an office, and, of course, watch sports—especially the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks.  DirectBuy, the leading home improvement and furnishings club with direct insider prices, has some pointers for making the man cave guest-friendly for the upcoming NHL season and beyond.

“While being able to get away from the rest of the house and watch sporting events like hockey in peace may have been the genesis of the man cave, what might not have been taken into consideration initially was the desire to someday invite others to watch the game with you,” said Jeremy Vest, owner of DirectBuy of DuPage County. “Let’s face it, if you’re setting up a space fit for entertaining guests that’s something most men may want some assistance with.”

So what items might today’s man cave need to complete the perfect hockey-watching party?:

●       Kegerator, a man-cave essential for a beer-drinking crowd

●       Wide Screen TV with HD; surround sound speakers also recommended

●       Sectional sofa to accommodate multiple visitors; reclining chair with cup holders for the host.

●       Full-size, built-in bar area or free-standing, mobile bar station

●       Tile or wood flooring that’s particularly resilient to potential spillage

●       Pool table, air hockey, or foosball for halftime recreation

●       Mini-kitchen with microwave to reheat buffalo wings.

●       Home gym equipment—e.g. treadmill, elliptical—to work off the excess calories consumed during man cave weekend hockey marathons.

DirectBuy offers nearly everything you need to create the perfect man cave no matter what your favorite sport might be at prices direct from manufacturers or their authorized suppliers. If you know what you want but don’t know how to pull it all together, DirectBuy also employs product specialists and professional designers well versed in the art of designing the perfect recreational space, while keeping you on budget.

A pound of prevention for this fall’s home improvement projects

September 20, 2010 //  by admin

CHICAGO, GURNEE, NAPERVILLE, TINLEY PARK, IL …

While Benjamin Franklin may not have had homeowners in mind when he said, “a pound of prevention is better than an ounce of cure,” the saying certainly applies to home improvement projects, especially in the fall. With winter in the not-so-distant future, the projects Franklin might recommend would probably be of a preventative nature.

“One of the traps homeowners fall into, particularly new ones, is they try to do everything at once and don’t prioritize projects,” said Jeremy Vest, owner of DirectBuy of DuPage County, the leading home improvement and home furnishing club with direct insider prices. “Part two of that is that less savvy do-it-yourselfers might not know how to go about prioritizing. That’s why getting professional assistance is a pretty good idea.”

Vest recommends hiring a home inspector in the fall to get a professional assessment. While this may seem rather odd if you’re not buying or selling your home, hiring a home inspector is one way to detect potential large problems early, like a leaky roof for example, before the weather turns and you have a very serious problem on your hands.

“A typical home inspection can run anywhere from $250 to $400, but if it is the difference between that and replacing an entire section of roof or water damage in your home, it’s kind of a no-brainer,” said Vest.

Other fall preventative steps Vest recommends include:

  • Furnace inspection and service – The first sub-freezing day is no time to find out you have a problem with your furnace.
  • Chimney maintenance – Again, the first day you want to have a fire is not the time you want to encounter a problem. Hire a chimney sweep to ensure the chimney is clear of bird nests or other debris and that the cap is in place.
  • Window inspection – Be sure your windows are caulked and the seals between the windows are nice and tight. If you are unable to patch a leaky window, it may be time to replace it.
  • Clean your gutters – Autumn leaves and pine needles can create quite a backup of water in your gutters. That can translate to potential water damage to your house and, as the weather dips below freezing, icy sidewalks that make it treacherous for you and your holiday guests.

DirectBuy Club offers home furnishings and merchandise in addition to items for home improvement projects to help all homeowners create their dream homes— at direct insider prices. DirectBuy also employs product specialists and designers, so if you need some assistance in selecting products or taking on a home improvement project, you have seasoned professionals at your service.

“I know it goes against the grain to spend money on a home improvement project when there’s not an immediate need,” said Vest. “By making these recommendations part of your fall routine, you can definitely prevent major problems down the road.”

Kitchen makeover ideas—without the makeover

September 9, 2010 //  by admin

CHICAGO, GURNEE, NAPERVILLE, TINLEY PARK, IL …

Looking to make an impact on your kitchen but don’t have the budget for a complete makeover? There are many mini-makeover ideas homeowners can use to give their kitchens a bit of a different look without a major undertaking.

“Because the kitchen is such a focal point in a home, the perception is that to give it a new look requires a major undertaking,” said Jeremy Vest, owner of DirectBuy of DuPage County. “Truth be told, there are several small, do-it-yourself projects that can have a very significant impact with only modest effort and very little investment required.”

One such technique is taking the doors off your kitchen cabinets. “Open shelving” allows you to display dishes, stemware, antique bowls, small appliances and more.  Open shelving can also make your kitchen appear larger and more open.

This option also offers the opportunity to experiment. You can remove certain cabinet doors and leave others, creating your own pattern. Or, you might consider painting the back of the cabinet that is viewable from the front a different color to add a little pizzazz to your kitchen.

Another kitchen mini-makeover idea that’s a bit more labor and cost-intensive is redoing your kitchen’s backsplash. While there are many choices available, the three most popular materials used for kitchen backsplashes are:

  • Stone mosaics
  • Glass mosaics
  • Glazed ceramic

There are simply thousands of colors and designs you can use in any of these formats.  You can even use them as inserts in conjunction with another material such as stainless steel.

“A lot of homeowners feel that how their kitchen looks is how it looks unless they want to completely remodel,” said Vest. “These ideas give homeowners a chance to liven up their kitchen without committing to a major renovation.”

DirectBuy Club offers home furnishings and items and materials for home improvement projects to help all homeowners create their dream homes—all at direct insider prices. DirectBuy also employs product specialists and designers, so if you need some assistance in selecting products or taking on a home improvement project, you have seasoned professionals at your service.

Tips for selecting an energy-efficient refrigerator

August 12, 2010 //  by admin

CHICAGO, GURNEE, NAPERVILLE, TINLEY PARK, IL …

While it’s the objective of most homeowners to run a greener household, the other kind of green—dollars—often dictates how much you can commit. When selecting household appliances like a refrigerator, however, homeowners should consider the potential energy savings more so than the sticker price.

“At this stage of the game, consumers know they should be selecting an Energy Star product, but beyond that, it’s back to how much it costs rather than how much you can save,” said Jeremy Vest, owner of DirectBuy of DuPage County. “By doing a little research and examining your needs, you can save some green and be green.”

Vest recommends:

  • Shopping for Energy Star-rated refrigerators that exceed the government’s minimum requirements.
  • Reviewing energy guides supplied by the U.S. government that compare kilowatt-hour usage and estimated yearly energy costs associated with refrigerators. Energy guides are available online.
  • Buying a refrigerator with a highly efficient compressor and good insulation. Poor compression or insulation can allow cool air to escape, which will raise energy costs.
  • Selecting a refrigerator that enables you to choose the exact temperature you desire for both the refrigerator and freezer.
  • Choosing freezer-on-top models that have an energy saver switch, which allows you to deactivate the anti-sweat function. This lowers moisture content, a feature that’s only necessary when humidity is high.
  • Purchasing the smallest refrigerator that will comfortably meet your needs (smaller refrigerators consume less energy than their larger counterparts will because they have to less space to cool).
  • Considering separate refrigerator and freezer units. This will increase the food-storage capabilities of both units and decrease the radiant loss from one compartment to the next (the amount of cold-air “leakage” from the freezer into the refrigerator that occurs with refrigerator/freezer combinations).

“Selecting an energy-efficient refrigerator reminds me of the old expression ‘don’t work harder, work smarter,’” said Vest. “While it’s an important first step to select an Energy Star-rated refrigerator, doing your due diligence can really make a dent in your monthly energy costs.”

The leading home improvement and furnishings club with direct insider prices, DirectBuy Club offers manufacturer-direct pricing on products ranging from energy-efficient refrigerators to televisions to kitchen cabinets, all from more than 700 manufacturers or their authorized suppliers. DirectBuy Club also offers design, delivery, and installation services.

With several convenient locations in the greater Chicago area (Chicago, Gurnee, Naperville and Tinley Park), consumers can enjoy a comfortable country club setting, where they finally have the financial control of buying direct.

A 10 in Naperville. DirectBuy of DuPage County celebrates 10 years in business.

June 15, 2010 //  by admin

NAPERVILLE, ILLINOIS…

For 10 years, DirectBuy of DuPage County has been offering consumers in the greater Chicago area a brand new way to save on home improvement projects, furnishings, and accessories.

The leading home improvement and furnishings club with direct insider prices, DirectBuy of DuPage County offers products ranging from light fixtures to televisions to kitchen cabinets, from more than 700 manufacturers or their authorized suppliers at direct insider prices.

“A lot has changed in our 10 years in business,” said Jeremy Vest, owner of DirectBuy of DuPage County. “For example, if you said ‘green’ 10 years ago, most people thought you were talking about color. Now, being green is about energy efficiency and environmentally friendly, and that’s one area we’ve been able to help our members by providing the resources to make greener purchases.”

In addition to its regular schedule of kitchen and bath remodeling seminars, DirectBuy of DuPage County recently began hosting green energy seminars for its members. The most recent seminar focused on ways members could take advantage of the government’s rebate for trading in older appliances for new, energy efficient models. To recognize their members’ green efforts, DirectBuy of DuPage County donated 100 trees to the Arbor Day Foundation’s “Replanting Our Nation’s Forests” program.

Beyond its informational programs and the tremendous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products, flooring, and accessories, DirectBuy Club also offers design and delivery services to its members, as well as a listing of local contractors who offer installation services, many times at a discounted rate.

“DirectBuy Club helps our members stretch their dollars further. That’s become very important as homeowners are investing more in their current homes rather than testing a tricky real estate market,” said Vest. “Our tenth anniversary is a great time to reflect on the members we’ve been able to help in that regard and to look forward to how many more we can help in the coming years.”

Conveniently located at 1864 High Grove Lane, Suite 124 in Naperville, Illinois, DirectBuy Club offers consumers a comfortable setting where they finally have the financial control of buying direct.
