Saving, Investing and Building a Business – Important Lessons Learned at Boys and Girls Club “Money Matters” Program

February 9, 2009 //  by admin

The Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield, a non-profit organization that provides the area’s youth with enrichment and recreation programs in a safe environment, has recently concluded a “Money Matters” program for club members. The program was very successful and the club received such a positive response that they will be running Money Matters again in May.

Designed to promote financial responsibility and independence among pre-teen and teen club members, the Money Matters program helped the kids to build their money management skills.
Over the course of five weeks, eight Boys and Girls Club members learned how to manage a checking account, budget, save and invest. They also learn about starting a small business and paying for college.

“The Money Matters program goes beyond the basic elements of earning money and saving it. The kids learned about credit cards as well as about a variety of investment vehicles that would put their money to work and give them a good return. They also learned how to budget and better control their spending. When kids learn these lessons at a young age, they become financially successful adults,” noted Joanna Degnan who is a CPA at Price Waterhouse Coopers and led the program.

“I have learned so many things in this class.  I have even taught some to my family. The thing I enjoyed the most was learning about the credit cards,” said 12-year old Marshfield resident Ben Quimby of the Money Matters program.

According to 10-year old Sydney Eastman, also a Marshfield resident, “I enjoyed learning different ways to save money.  I just started earning an allowance and Miss Degnan gave us great ideas on how to save and spend our money the right way.”

The kids utilized special program tools which included a Teen Personal Finance Guide containing practical tips and activities to help kids learn the important skills of balancing a checkbook, creating a budget and saving and investing for college and retirement. They also utilized the Money Matters website, an engaging online tool for building money management knowledge and skills through interactive activities, games and tools like a savings and financial aid calculator to plan for college.

Greg Langer, 12, of Marshfield said, “I think the Money Matters Program will help me in the future to plan goals and spend my money more wisely.”

The Money Matters program will be held again in May for club members who are age 15 and older. To learn more about the Money Matters program, contact Kathleen Newcomb at the Boys and Girls Club (781) 834-2582.

The Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield has put out the call for Auction items for their annual Gala and Auction which will be held on March 7, 2009 at the Indian Pond Country Club in Kingston.

Approximately 350 people are expected to attend this year’s dazzling Gala and Auction which celebrates the fifth anniversary of the Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield and also serves as a major fundraiser. Donations are needed for the Silent and Live Auctions, which will be held during the evening of the Gala and an Online Auction, which will be held in advance of the Gala.

Donations of sports memorabilia or tickets to major sporting events; musical performances and stage shows are always popular with auction bidders. Exciting donations that create an auction “buzz” may include an all-inclusive vacation cruise; a kitchen makeover; a new car, boat or other watercraft and a plasma TV. Services, such as a year’s worth of weekly house cleaning or exterior and interior painting make great auction donations as does an annual membership to a fitness center/health club.

At last year’s Evening Under the Stars Gala and Auction, more than $40,000 was raised in support of programs for more than 4,000 youths in the area.

“We’re very excited about this event and we anticipate a good response to our call for auction items. We’re including an Online Auction to give folks who may not be able to attend the Gala, an opportunity to bid on and potentially come away with some really terrific prizes,” noted Greg Jackson, Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club.

Have an exciting item to donate to the Silent, Live or Online Auction? Contact Maura Buckley Troiano via email at maura_troiano@yahoo.com.

For more information about the Gala and Auction or to purchase tickets, visit the website www.marshfieldboysandgirlsclub.com or contact Shawn Costa, Director of Development at the club (781) 834-CLUB (2582).

Marshfield Polar Express Magical Train Ride was a Hit – $30K Raised

December 23, 2008 //  by admin

The Marshfield Polar Express came to life this past Saturday on the Kingston commuter rail as the train made its magical round trip journey to the North Pole.

There was plenty of laughter and caroling aboard the Polar Express, as children of all ages and adults were entertained by Santa’s elves and Mrs. Claus while drinking hot chocolate and snacking on fresh baked cookies. Upon their arrival at the “North Pole”, each child wrote their Christmas wish on Santa’s scroll and received a special gift from Santa, so they may always believe.

The four, one-hour train rides were nearly filled to capacity. All proceeds from the Polar Express benefited the privately funded, non-profit the Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield. More than $30,000 was raised and will support programs and scholarships at the club.

This event was sponsored by Sam’s Club, Tiny & Sons Glass, ACT Smart, Inc., Dunkin Donuts, Family Crest Catering, EmbroidMe, Venus II Restaurant, Ninety Nine Restaurants, Marshfield Mini Storage, Roche Bros., Rockland Trust, Scituate Federal Savings and Vertex.

“This was the first year we held a Polar Express event and we’re delighted with the success of it. Thanks to everyone who volunteered; our staff who worked tirelessly to pull it together and all who generously sponsored the event. It was a great day out. We’ll certainly consider another Polar Express fundraiser in the future,” noted Greg Jackson, Executive Director of Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield.

New “Money Matters” Program at Boys and Girls Club Teaches Important Lessons in Finance

December 4, 2008 //  by admin

The Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield, a non-profit organization that provides the area’s youth with enrichment and recreation programs in a safe environment, is now offering a new program known as “Money Matters” which teaches club members all about how to better manage their money.

Led by volunteer Joanna Degnan who is a CPA at Price Waterhouse Coopers, Money Matters promotes financial responsibility and independence among club members ages 13 to 18 years old by building their basic money management skills.

During the five-week program which runs through mid-January, participants learn how to manage a checking account, budget, save and invest. They also learn about starting small businesses and paying for college.

Money Matters features three key components for the teens and club staff:

· A Teen Personal Finance Guide is a fun, attractive booklet containing practical tips and activities to help teens learn the important skills of balancing a checkbook, creating a budget and saving and investing for college and retirement.

· A Facilitator’s Guide provides Club staff and volunteers with basic financial information and instructions for easy-to-implement small-group activities.

· A Money Matters Website, offers teens an engaging online tool for building their money management knowledge and skills through interactive activities, games and tools like a savings and financial aid calculator to plan for college.

“The program engages the kids in the basics of money management but then takes it a step further by teaching them how to invest their money wisely and potentially start a small business,” explained Greg Jackson, Executive Director of the club.

Children must be a member of the club in order to participate in Money Matters. The annual membership fee is $50. To learn more about the program, contact Kathleen Newcomb at the Boys and Girls Club (781) 834-2582.

Club Haunt offers affordable family fun and also makes for a great date night with plenty of frightening activities, spooky characters and games for all ages. Activities include a family hayride, which is “not-so-scary” and meant for young children, as well as a “scare you witless” haunted hayride. Club Haunt dining is available at an additional charge and will be provided by Crest Family Catering in Hanover.

More than 75 volunteers and staff work tirelessly to pull off this successful annual Club Haunt event. Each year, approximately 2,000 to 3,000 people attend.

“This is one of our biggest events drawing families from far and wide. There’s something for everyone. People with very young children can enjoy the spooky, yet not scary, hayride and games. Older children and adults will enjoy a more frightening haunted hayride and Club Haunt experience,” said the club’s Executive Director Greg Jackson. “A lot of people attend the event in costume. It’s a really good time and it raises money for a good cause.”

Proceeds from the Club Haunt benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield. The privately funded, non-profit club hopes to raise at least $10K to support programming.

Tickets are available at the Club Haunt entrance. Discounted tickets may be purchased in advance at the Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield, Pre-Game Sports in Webster Square or at The Little Gym in the Christmas Tree Shop plaza.
