Boston Pack and Ship

Giving outside the box…Boston Pack and Ship salutes Cape Cod Cares For Our Troops for holiday care package achievement.

December 15, 2010 //  by admin

BRAINTREE, MA and BREWSTER, MA…

Over its 23 years as a small load shipping specialist, Boston Pack and Ship knows what it’s like to ship hundreds, even thousands of boxes at a time. That’s why the Braintree-based shippers holds Cape Cod Cares for Our Troops in the highest regard for achieving its goal of sending out more than 1500 holiday packages to U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Cape Cod Cares For Our Troops is a non-profit organization started by then 12-year-old (now 18) Dylan DeSilva of Brewster, Mass. Cape Cod Cares for Our Troops, which sends care packages to U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan on a weekly basis, set a goal of 1500 care packages to be sent for the holidays. Boston Pack and Ship donated 300 boxes and other shipping supplies and then coordinated another 1300 boxes to be sold at a discounted rate from their vendor, Colin Box of Easton, Massachusetts towards this effort.

“Boston Pack and Ship offers our heartfelt congratulations to Dylan and Cape Cod Cares for Our Troops for not only meeting its goal of 1500, but for raising the bar and sending out 1700 and still counting,” said Joe Fell, co-owner of Boston Pack and Ship. “At Boston Pack and Ship, we specialize in sending out delicate, high monetary value items. Yet none probably mean as much as these care packages and we’re proud to have been a part of this effort.”

Cape Cod Cares for Our Troops’ regularly sends care packages to U.S. Troops overseas and accepts donations year round. Those interested contributing to the care packages can find a list of items and drop-off locations on www.capecod4thetroops.com. Cape Cod Cares for Our Troops also accepts monetary contributions to help with the cost of supplies and postage. Checks can be sent to: Cape Cod Cares for the Troops, 1831 Long Pond Rd.  Brewster, MA  02631.

“We’d like to thank Boston Pack and Ship and all our other sponsors and contributors for their generosity,” said DeSilva. “Fifteen hundred care packages was a mighty ambitious goal, but with the help of all our volunteers and contributors, we were able to make it. Now, it looks like the final total might be just under 2000! Thanks to all.”

Facebook’s newest ‘face’…Boston Pack and Shop launches Facebook page

July 7, 2010 //  by admin

BRAINTREE, MA…

Braintree, Mass.-based Boston Pack and Ship, a small-load shipping specialist for the past 22 years, recently announced the launch of the company’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/bostonpackandship.

In addition to the company’s contact info and photos of Boston Pack and Ship staff, the Facebook page features posts offering helpful packing tips. It also includes reviews from current and former Boston Pack and Ship customers.

The reality is that most of us at one point or another have to ship an item that’s a little too delicate for us to handle on our own. That’s our specialty,” said Joe Fell, co-owner of Boston Pack and Ship. “The Facebook page provides another vehicle in addition to our Web site or calling us on the phone, to get information to prospective customers.”

New wrinkles to moving scams.

May 11, 2010 //  by admin

BRAINTREE, MA…

Next to losing your job and divorce, moving is one of the more stressful things you can do in life. In addition to all the logistics and the emotional turmoil of changing where it is you will live your life, moving scams add fuel to an already raging fire. That’s why new moving scams involving “guaranteed” quotes, packing materials and moving size measurements have created a raging inferno.

How big? The Better Business Bureau reported more than 8400 complaints against moving companies in 2009. According to Boston Pack and Ship, a small load shipping company based in Braintree, Massachusetts, even if you know nothing about the moving industry, you can avoid moving scams—even the latest ones—by doing a just a little homework and applying common sense.

“Buyer beware, if it sounds too good to be true, and any number of clichés apply when hiring a moving company,” said Joe Fell, co-owner of Boston Pack and Ship. “New or old, you can avoid most of the scams by only working with companies who are referred to you by people you know, getting a minimum of three bids and making sure the moving company is local and has a physical address at one end of the move or the other.”

Continued Fell, “A little research on moving scams on sites like movingscam.com can also make you aware of the dangers out there, especially some of the newer ones.”

Those newer ones include:

  • Guaranteed quote, wrong estimate – This is when the mover gives you a binding quote or flat rate. If that quote is based on faulty information—they forgot to add in that small bedroom downstairs—then the ‘guaranteed’ quote changes. The fix? Never sign off on a quote unless the mover does an onsite, visual inspection of everything that is to be moved—then get it in writing as a guaranteed quote.
  • Packing material charges – Ideally, you pack everything yourself. But if you run out of time and/or boxes, having the moving company pack your remaining items can be quite costly—especially if it’s not an ethical firm. Wrapping boxes with yards of tape per box, packing boxes with one item and paper filling for the rest of are just a few of the ways movers can jack up the price of materials. Do yourself a favor and leave plenty of time for packing.
  • Know what you are buying – Many reputable moving companies provide estimates in cubic feet, which is a term not many people are familiar with. It refers to the amount of space your stuff takes up. If you are not familiar with cubic feet, do not be afraid to ask questions until you have a thorough understanding. As a side note, remember that cubic feet can be converted into pounds (much like feet can be converted into meters). If you’re having trouble understanding your estimate, ask for it in a measure you can understand.

“Moving scams have been around since the cavemen. While there is no one way to protect yourself 100 percent, the best course is if you’re unsure or uneasy, always opt for the mover who was referred to you by trusted family or friends,” said Fell.

Boston Pack and Ship specializes in moves of 1,000 pounds or less. In addition, it offers customized package and custom crate building services at its workshop in Braintree. When shipping items overseas, size matters…How small shipping companies can save customers time and money on overseas shipments.

March 23, 2010 //  by admin

BRAINTREE, MA…

When you’re arranging for a larger shipment overseas—20 boxes, suitcases, computer equipment, or a piece of furniture—size does play an important role in how much it will cost. Yet the size of the shipping company you choose could play an even larger role in the cost–even whether or not your shipment makes it to its final destination.

Typically for ocean shipping, larger international shippers have a minimum of three to five cubic meters; while most small shippers will only send a couple of boxes. So, if you’re only sending over a few larger items that don’t meet the minimum requirements but are too bulky for the smaller shippers or U.S. Postal Service, you can be paying for quite a bit of unused space.

“Boston has a lot of international students and people from abroad working here, many who don’t know there are other options out there like small shippers who can better meet their needs,” said Joe Fell, co-owner of Boston Pack and Ship, a small load shipping specialist for the past two decades.

Boston Pack and Ship offers international ocean shipping to most major cities around the globe. Since Boston Pack and Ship has only a one cubic meter minimum, compared to the three-to-five cubic meter minimum for large shippers, sending your items via ocean freighter can be an affordable option.

Besides smaller minimums and offering pick-up services, Boston Pack and Ship also provides customized package and custom crate building services at its workshop in Braintree, Massachusetts. Most importantly, Boston Pack and Ship is certified by Northeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association (NeLMA).

NeLMA is a sanctioning body for the International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM). Wood to be used for pallets and crates for overseas shipping must be heat-treated for 30 minutes at 133 degrees to receive the NeLMA stamp. This heat treatment kills any insects and their eggs that may be in the wood. Any crate shipped overseas without the appropriate stamp can be seized by customs authorities. What happens to the contents of an uncertified crate can range from fumigation to permanent destruction of the crate, its contents, or return of the shipment to the U.S.—all at the owner’s expense.

“There are many repercussions from using a shipping company large or small that is not certified. Having your items damaged or destroyed is one. The other is the possibility that the wood used on your pallet or crate is infested. There have been a few cases in the news recently where insects have made their way into the U.S.—and vice versa to other countries–via crates and done significant damage to trees and vegetation,” added Fell.

In addition to paying attention to minimums and only using shippers with the proper ISPM certifications, Boston Pack and Ship offers a number of other special overseas shipping services, including:

●       One page introductory e-mail outlining the entire process – full explanation of all fees

●       Preparation of all export customs documents.

●       Door-to-port service – Boston Pack and Ship will pick up your boxes at your home or office. Delivery is to a bonded warehouse where you can pick up your goods or arrange for final local delivery.

●       Consolidation of your shipment on a pallet – all boxes are stretch-wrapped in plastic and strapped to the pallet.

●       Complete information regarding shipment – name of vessel, voyage number, date of departure and arrival as well as a booking number will be e-mailed to you prior to shipping.

●       Complete contact information of overseas agent (name, address, phone, e-mail) to arrange delivery from port to final destination.

●       $500 worth of insurance for loss on each box is included.

Boston Pack and Ship delivers for Ropes & Gray employees “Backpacks for the Homeless” project.

August 31, 2009 //  by admin

BRAINTREE, MA and BOSTON, MA…

Back to school time of year means different things to different people. For Ropes & Gray lawyers and staff, it represents the time of year when they give backpacks of school supplies to school-age children at homeless shelters throughout Boston. Boston Pack and Ship, a Braintree-based small load shipping specialist, helped out in this cause, delivering 180 of those backpacks to a Boston homeless shelter.

“We’ve had a working relationship with Ropes & Gray for more than two decades. When we heard about the Backpack for the Homeless project, it was something we knew we wanted to be involved with,” said Joe Fell, co-owner of Boston Pack and Ship.

Ropes & Gray employees began the “Backpacks for the Homeless” initiative in 1999. Over the years, with the help of local sponsors and volunteers, the project has grown to the point where the group was creating backpacks for 13 Boston homeless shelters, including one with 180 school-age children (grades K-12).

“In previous years, we had counselors from each shelter come to our offices and pick up the backpacks for the kids. But with 180 backpacks going to a specific shelter, that was going to be a bit much. We’re very grateful to Boston Pack and Ship for volunteering a vehicle and their movers to take care of this delivery,” said Susan Minor, one of the coordinators of this year’s “Backpacks for the Homeless” project.

Each backpack contains a variety of school supplies specific to each child’s grade. So while most backpacks will include your standards—paper, pencils, rulers, glue sticks, etc.—some will have items that their curriculum requires (e.g. 10th graders receiving a scientific calculator). In addition, each backpack contains an outfit for the first day of school (e.g. shirt and pants).

“Living in a homeless shelter, their lives are challenging enough. We started this program so these children could start the school year feeling like most kids with the supplies they need and a brand new set of clothes that fit,” said Minor.

Added Joe Fell, co-owner of Boston Pack and Ship, “We are delighted to be a part of this very worthwhile effort. The volunteers from Ropes & Gray who take part in this program are to be commended for taking this on every year. It’s no small accomplishment to get supplies and clothes in the right sizes for all those kids and they do a great job in pulling it all together.”

If you would like to make a monetary contribution or volunteer for next year’s backpack project, please contact: backpackproject@ropesgray.com
