“South Coast Working” is a new podcast and promotes the voice of working people and those who continue to build the South Coast each and every day. From the docks to the mills to the classrooms to the roadways, working people add a voice and life to the region.

South Coast Working was born from the inspiration and motivation of students, staff and faculty of Arnold M. Dubin Labor Education Center, UMass Dartmouth, as well as the adult children and grandchildren for which the Center was named, in order to spread awareness about the challenges facing and opportunities available to members of the workforce in and around South Coast Massachusetts. Through passionate collaboration, it was determined that a podcast would be the most effective and accessible medium to achieve this goal.
The first episode chronicles the long-awaited arrival of commuter rail line infrastructure that will connect New Bedford with Boston – and all of the economic advantages it offers. Recently graduated student journalist, Liz Anusauskas spoke with prominent commuter leaders Siggy Meilus, founder of UMass Dartmouth’s transportation advocacy organization, Bus Riders United and Eric Carvalho, president of Fall River’s Amalgamated Transit Union Local 174. These conversations take listeners on a deep dive into the complexities of public transportation and the profound impact its presence, or lack thereof, can have on a population.
“Our new podcast is intended to inform, entertain and uplift workers from all walks of life and throughout the South Coast,” noted Kim Wilson, Director of UMass Dartmouth’s Arnold M. Dubin Labor Education Center. “The podcast format is a perfect venue for us to fully explore labor issues and have our audience enjoy and listen when and where they can. We are excited about our first few episodes and strongly encourage the community to provide suggestions and directions of where the next segments might go.”

The Labor Education Center serves as a bridge between the university, the labor movement, and the local community. The Center creates internships for students, programming on campus focused on social change for justice and organizing and external training is available to workers and worker centers, unions, and labor councils in the region. This includes training for officers, members and stewards through a statewide Labor Extension Program.
