DirectBuy of Long Beach donates to Lydia’s House

January 8, 2009 //  by admin

Long Beach, CA – DirectBuy, the leading members-only showroom and home design center that offers merchandise direct from manufacturers and their authorized suppliers, is proud to announce that DirectBuy of Long Beach had the distinct privilege of donating unwrapped toys, clothing, gifts and other charitable items to the Lydia’s House Women’s Shelter.

The owners of DirectBuy of Long Beach, accompanied by some of their staff members, visited the women and children of Lydia’s House on December 22, 2008 to present them with the donated gifts. “We set up in front of the Christmas tree in the living room while all of the house residents sat around,” explained John Remar, co-owner of DirectBuy Long Beach. “We started calling off names and the children came running at us. It was such a great experience and very heart warming.” After the children opened their gifts, the DirectBuy staff were given a tour of Lydia’s House and gained further knowledge of the facilit’s operations.

Lydia’s House is a women’s shelter for single mothers and victims of abuse and works to provide transitional housing, goal-oriented support services and access to community resources for more than 275 local women and their children. In partnership with volunteers and donors – such as DirectBuy of Long Beach – Lydia’s House works to end domestic violence by continuing to provide a place of healing and a voice of hope.

Adopting a local shelter for the holidays was a goal of the owners as well as the entire staff, who wanted to give back to a community that has helped them so much over the years. “We felt the need to give back to those that our less fortunate than ourselves considering how the economy is suffering,” said Remar. “We hope that our contributions will make a huge impact on the women and children of Lydia’s House in the coming year.”

DirectBuy of Long Beach reached out to their members to ask for their help in donating gifts and money to Lydia’s House by hosting two full weeks of sharing from December 6 to December 21. Everything from word-of-mouth to email blasts were used to promote the program to staff and members, and the team at DirectBuy also designed and displayed a wish list of gifts and donation box in the showroom lobby to increase the program’s visibility with members.

DirectBuy of Long Beach, which has a 30,000 sq. foot showroom and is conveniently located at 2401 E. Willow Street in Signal Hill, California, offers consumers a comfortable, welcoming setting and design center where they finally have the financial control of buying direct.

“DirectBuy of Long Beach sets itself apart from traditional retailers by providing consumers with a low-cost, ‘one-stop shopping’ destination where they can furnish, build or renovate their home,” said co-owner Jock Petersen. “Members enjoy personalized service as they navigate through our extensive selection of brand-name, top-of-the-line merchandise.”

DirectBuy of Long Beach offers area residents thousands of items, including kitchen cabinets, flat-screen televisions and major appliances from more than 700 top manufacturers and their authorized suppliers.

To assist members with their home renovation projects, DirectBuy employs interior designers and product specialists who are specially trained in one of five areas of merchandise: Home Furnishing, Home Improvement, Flooring, Accessories, and Entertainment/Outdoor.

DirectBuy members also have access to renowned designer Christopher Lowell.  Lowell has designed twelve room settings – created exclusively with products available through DirectBuy – using his Seven Layers of Design.  An innovative approach to home décor, The Seven Layers of Design keeps homeowners on budget and from feeling overwhelmed by their project.

Can’t buy me love…Valentine’s Day in a recession.

January 6, 2009 //  by admin

NORWELL, MA…

With Valentine’s Day coming in the not-so-distant future, many recession-strapped Valentines are wondering what they can do for their sweetie this year. Especially since fancy dinners at five-star restaurants, bouquets of flowers and treating your Valentine to a day of pampering at spa aren’t exactly in a lot of people’s budgets these days.

Still, according to love expert Paul Falzone, CEO of The Right One and Together Dating–one of the world’s largest brick-and-mortar dating services with more than 60 offices nationwide–just because times might be tough, it doesn’t mean romance must suffer.

“Valentine’s Day is about love and romance. Somehow that got twisted into how much you spend. Nothing could be further from the truth. It’s truly the thought that counts. And if the economy has made people stop and really put some thought into the little things they can do for that special someone in their life on Valentine’s Day, they’re going to be pleasantly surprised both with how little it costs and the results,” says Falzone.

Here are some budget-friendly, thoughtful gestures you might want to try this Valentine’s Day:

  • Leave a “racy” picture on your mate’s cell phone.
  • Text a romantic message at a time of day when you know things get rather hectic and your sweetie could use a pick-me-up.
  • Leave a chocolate or single rose on your Valentine’s pillow.
  • Use a bar of soap to draft a love note on your bathroom mirror.
  • Eat in for Valentine’s day with candles providing the only light. Better yet, spread out a blanket and have your meal as a picnic on the living room floor—even better if you have a fireplace.
  • Instead of a day at the spa, take turns giving each other back rubs.
  • Have a glass of your loved one’s favorite drink ready and waiting for them when they get home. If your loved one likes beer or wine, serve it in a frosted glass—unless they prefer it warm.
  •  Celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 13 or 15 to make it “your holiday” and not one shared with the rest of the world.
  • Pick one household chore your Valentine usually does and surprise them by doing it before they get a chance to (e.g. making the bed). It may not sound romantic, but the thought will most certainly count.

“You know, you keep hearing about the doom and gloom of today’s economy, but it actually presents a lot of opportunities. One is to show the person you love how much by using your imagination and not your checkbook. And that, my friends, is the secret to making Valentine’s Day one he or she will always remember,” said Falzone.

Nothing second-hand about giving…DirectBuy of Tinley Park donates computers to Goodwill; furniture to Catholic Charities.

January 2, 2009 //  by admin

TINLEY PARK, IL…

Over the years, DirectBuy has been recognized for giving families the opportunity to buy directly from the manufacturer and save hundreds, even thousands, on home improvement projects, furniture, appliance and many other household items. DirectBuy has also earned a reputation for its generosity in the communities they serve. A fine example of that is DirectBuy of Tinley Park for its recent donation to Catholic Charities and Goodwill.

DirectBuy of Tinley Park donated 12 computers, complete with keyboard and monitors, to Goodwill, located in Orland Park, Illinois. In addition, they also donated several brand new pieces of furniture and appliances to Catholic Charities, including a washing machine, twin bedroom set and living room fireplace.

“We’ve been supporters of Catholic Charities and Goodwill for a long time now. Yet with these difficult economic times we’re currently in, we wanted to do a little more this year, something that went beyond writing a check. By contributing furniture and appliances to Catholic Charities and the computers to Goodwill, we’re providing items that we know will be put to good use,” said I.J. Sell, owner of DirectBuy of Tinley Park.

That type of generosity is fairly standard for DirectBuy. Showroom owners nationwide donate to any number of organizations, and have shown a particular affinity for making contributions to children/family-oriented organizations like Boys & Girls Club, YMCA and children’s hospitals.

Since 1971, DirectBuy franchises have offered members the opportunity to enjoy enormous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products and accessories by buying wholesale, directly from the manufacturer. DirectBuy of Greater Vancouver donates washer/dryer to Servants Anonymous Society of Surrey.

December 30, 2008 //  by admin

COQUITLAM, BC…

While DirectBuy has made it’s name by giving families the opportunity to buy directly from the manufacturer and save hundreds, even thousands, on home improvement projects, furniture, appliance and many other household items, it’s reputation for generosity also speaks for itself. A fine example of that is DirectBuy of Greater Vancouver’s recent donation of a washer/dryer to Servants Anonymous Society of Surrey.

The Servants Anonymous Society, founded ten years ago, was set up to help sexually exploited young women get their lives back on track by providing secure housing and teaching them life skills. Servants Anonymous’ ASK Centre for Learning is designed to provide each participant with an opportunity to learn the personal and occupational skills required to help them obtain and maintain employment, return to school, and/or raise their children on a full-time basis.

“The Servants Anonymous Society is doing phenomenal work with these young women, many of whom come from very troubled backgrounds,” Peter Ruetz, owner of DirectBuy of Greater Vancouver. “While the retail value of the washer/dryer we donated is about $1800, you really can’t put a dollar value on helping a person get their life back and that’s really what they do at Servants Anonymous.”

That type of generosity is fairly standard for DirectBuy. Showroom owners across North America donate to any number of organizations, and have shown a particular affinity for making contributions to children/family-oriented organizations like Boys & Girls Club, YMCA, children’s hospitals and the Salvation Army.

“One of the keys to helping these young women get their lives back on track is providing them with a safe and clean environment in which to learn life skills. Something as simple as being able to take care of your own laundry can go a long way towards that young woman standing up on her own two feet. DirectBuy’s generous donation will go a long way in helping us help these women,” said Kelly Ferguson, facilities manager at Servants Anonymous Society.

Since 1971, DirectBuy has helped consumers enjoy enormous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products, and accessories, by providing an avenue to purchase directly from the manufacturer. With four convenient locations serving the Greater Vancouver area, DirectBuy offers consumers a comfortable, country-club setting, where they finally have the financial control of buying direct.

For more information on DirectBuy, you can visit www.DirectBuyBC.ca. To find out more about Servants Anonymous Society of Surrey, visit http://sasurrey.ca/.

Deliberately Misclassified? Allstate independent contractor agents, formerly Allstate employees, fight for true independence.

December 23, 2008 //  by admin

GULFPORT, MS….

People go into business on their own for a number of reasons, but the ability to “be your own boss” tops the list. So when Allstate Insurance converted the majority of its sales force from employee to independent contractor status in 2000, many of those agents anticipated liberation from the requirements of being an Allstate employee. Eight years later, 11,000+ Allstate agents are still waiting for their independence.

What Allstate agents have found as “independent contractors” are:

●        Mandatory office hours.

●        Sales quotas.

●        Verbal and written warnings threatening loss of contract for not meeting company expectations.

●        A requirement to forward office telephone calls to company service centers after hours.

●        Subjection to several employee-like controls, including annual performance reviews.

●        Mandatory meetings and training sessions.

●        Restrictions on certain inbound e-mails, some blocked.

In fact, many agents feel they’re treated more like employees today, than when they were actual employees. Said one agent, “Back then, we had a pension plan and, if the company wanted to fire you, there was an agent review board in place. Now, they can fire you with or without reason.”

Allstate agents certainly aren’t the first independent contractors to be treated like employees without the accompanying benefits. In 2007, after filing a class action lawsuit demanding parity with employee drivers, current and former FedEx independent contractor drivers were elated when Judge Robert Miller of the U.S. District Court in Northern Indiana certified them as a class. Not only has this action allowed their case to proceed, but it opened the door to similar cases involving independent contractors who are treated like employees.

Two months following the U.S. District Court in Northern Indiana’s decision, the Internal Revenue Service levied $319 million in fines and penalties levied against Federal Express. The fines and penalties were later withdrawn, but the IRS has continued to audit Federal Express for the years 2004 through 2006.

So why hasn’t the IRS gone after Allstate?

“That’s a good question,” said Jim Fish, executive director of the National Association of Professional Allstate Agents, a non-profit representing the rights of Allstate agents. “Agents bear all of the expenses and risks associated with operating an independent business, but are controlled as employees. Meanwhile Allstate enjoys a huge competitive cost advantage by avoiding expenses associated with pensions, health insurance, 401k’s, Social Security, and, most importantly, federal taxes. You would think that alone would rate the IRS’s attention, but that’s not been the case.”

The long-term goal for most insurance agents is to build their book of business and then, when they retire, sell it to the highest bidder. At Allstate, this is not always possible because the company controls who buys these books of business. Said one agent, “Our books of business were supposed to replace our pensions, but [Allstate] managers have started to interfere in the sales process, which has lowered the value of our agencies. This isn’t fair because for many of us, our book of business is the most important retirement asset we have.”

For more information on the National Association of Professional Allstate Agents, you can visit their Web site at www.napaausa.org or call (877) 269-3474.

About National Association of Professional Allstate Agents (NAPAA)

Marc Bourdeau celebrates five years with DirectBuy of Vancouver

December 19, 2008 //  by admin

VANCOUVER, COQUITLAM, VICTORIA, AND OKANAGAN, BC…

As warehouse manager, Marc Bourdeau keeps tabs on everything. Yet as he celebrates five years with DirectBuy of Vancouver, the leading members-only showroom and home design center that offers merchandise at manufacturer-direct prices, even he’s at a loss at where the time went.

“I started with the company in 2002 but took a 14-month sabbatical a few years back. So I kind of lost track how many years it’s been, but that’s what happens when you enjoy what you do and the people you do it with,” said Bourdeau, a Vancouver resident.

During his tenure with DirectBuy of Vancouver, Bourdeau has held a variety of roles. That’s included service manager and membership sales before taking on his current role as warehouse manager. That broad array of experience has given Bourdeau some perspective on what DirectBuy means to its members.

“Part of why I love my job is seeing the reaction of members when they come to pick up an order. I’ve lost track of how many times they’ve said ‘Do you know how much I saved on this?” said Bourdeau. “The other thing about being here such a long time is that you watch families grow—from couples dating, to planning a wedding and then having children. It’s another part of the job I love.”

“We took over ownership of DirectBuy of Vancouver about a year ago. Trust me, in that scenario, you want as many experienced folks on board as you can have. Marc is a pro’s pro and we hope to have him as part of our DirectBuy family for years to come,” said Jade Allen, owner of DirectBuy of Vancouver.

Since 1971, DirectBuy franchises have offered members the opportunity to enjoy enormous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products and accessories by buying wholesale, directly from the manufacturer. With four convenient locations in the greater Vancouver area (Victoria, Vancouver, Coquitlam, and Kelowna), consumers can enjoy a comfortable, country-club setting, where they finally have the financial control of buying direct.

Doing good does some good…Evans named DirectBuy of Buffalo’s November “Do-Gooder” of the month.

December 19, 2008 //  by admin

CHEEKTOWAGA, NEW YORK

DirectBuy of Buffalo, the leading members-only showroom and home design center, established the “Do-Gooder of the Month” award to recognize employees, vendors and even members going above and beyond the call of duty—either on the job or in their everyday lives. November’s winner was Lee Ann Evans, marketing manager at DirectBuy of Buffalo, for being recognized at DirectBuy’s international conference in San Francisco last month.

Evans received Career Level 500 honors for the number of families she has personally helped join DirectBuy during her nearly three years working for the Buffalo location. For this distinction, she received a certificate and plaque from DirectBuy Corporate officers as well as luggage made of fine leather.

“Lee Ann does a great job in our marketing department and Corporate’s recognition of her accomplishments bears that out. But we wanted to recognize those accomplishments on a more personal and local level. That’s why Lee Ann is our Do-Gooder for the month of November,” said Mark Klinger, owner of DirectBuy of Buffalo.

As for DirectBuy of Buffalo’s Do-Gooder of the Month, beyond the recognition, the recipient receives a restaurant gift certificate. For Evans, an East Amherst resident and graduate of Canisius College in Buffalo, working at DirectBuy means quite a bit more than a free meal.

“Just about three years ago, before I took the job with DirectBuy of Buffalo, I had another offer that I strongly considered. The owner of DirectBuy of Buffalo made a very compelling case for me to come work here. It’s turned out to be the best decision I ever made,” said Evans. “Quite simply, I love this company and love what we can do for families by helping them create the homes of their dreams.”

DirectBuy franchises across the United States and Canada are active contributors to many local non-profits and charities, including the Boys & Girls Clubs, Salvation Army and other South Shore YMCA, Homes for Our Troops and Children’s Hospital. Besides the Habitat for Humanity, DirectBuy of Buffalo was a sponsor of the first annual Kevin Everett Golf Weekend Classic and donates slightly damaged items that manufacturers will not exchange to the Delaware Avenue Baptist Church in Buffalo.

Since 1971, DirectBuy has helped consumers enjoy enormous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products, and accessories, by providing an avenue to purchase directly from the manufacturer. Conveniently located at 4950 Genesee Street in Cheektowaga, New York, DirectBuy offers members a comfortable setting, where they finally have the financial control of buying direct.
