Lawn or Moss pit? Managing Moss tips.

April 21, 2018 //  by admin

Winter storms late in the season combined with cold temperatures lingering well into spring have created ideal conditions for an adversary of lawns everywhere: moss.

This year, soil became wet, compact, and loss much of its ability to drain under the weight of ice and snow. Because of the late timing of the snows and frozen soil, lawns have had less time than usual to bounce back into mid-season form.

Even normally resilient and regionally popular lawn grasses like Perennial Ryegrass grow poorly under such conditions. Conversely, moss thrives in such environments favoring shade, moisture, compacted soil, poor drainage, and even low nutrients. Fortunately, there are steps you can take now to eradicate the problem as well as help to thwart it later in the season and for years to come.

The first option in eradicating moss is doing so physically – in most cases with a rake. Once patches of moss are identified and removed you can start to consider ways you can alter the environment to favor grass over moss. Then you will add seed to your lawn – especially in places where moss once was. Some recommend using chemicals like dish-safe soap or bleach. This should be done only in extreme circumstances. Consult a lawn-care professional like the ones at Lawn Doctor of Hanover before you start spraying chemicals on your lawn.

Once the moss is physically removed, you can begin to trouble shoot areas of your lawn in which moss were thriving. Shade may be causing you to experiencing moss accumulation around planted trees.  You can remove the soil around the tree and add mulch to eliminate this issue. If you are experiencing moss in drainage areas, you may want to aerate or till the soil then reseed with grass.

It is also recommended to have a sample of your soil tested. In doing so you can determine if your lawn is lacking key nutrients to promote grass growth. You can also see if the PH of your soil is too low or acidic.

Tom Norton of Lawn Doctor suggests, “If low PH level is the culprit responsible for your moss issue, you can make your soil more alkaline by adding Calcitic Lime.” Of course creating the right PH and nutrient balance for your soil is best accomplished with the help of lawn care professionals.”

If your lawn’s soil seems to be overly compact, draining poorly and patchy all over you may want to consider reseeding by Power Seeding. This method will allow seed, soil, and water to come together in the right ratio to allow for germination and does not harm any existing healthy turf. This service will also help to loosen your soil, making it drain better, and reducing the chances moss will grow on it again. Lawn Doctor uses their proprietary Turf Tamer Power Seeder to accomplish this task.

Moss can be managed. Proactive care will make your lawn a season long showcase.

Lawn Doctor is focused on working in harmony with the science of nature. Every service is designed to boost natural growth. This goes beyond the use of simple, green products. The company’s proprietary technology allows its lawn professionals to precisely measure and apply the optimum blend of nutrients and weed control – doing the right thing for your lawn and the environment.

A healthy lawn creates oxygen, removes dust and dirt, and filters water passing through its roots leaving pollutants behind and many more benefits. Lawn Doctor of Boston, the South Shore, and Cape Cod is a local, family owned and operated business.

Google is going to make it harder to leave your website on a non-secure server. Amston, CT firm warns of July deadline. Solution offered.

April 18, 2018 //  by admin

From phishing to countless other online scams there is an ever increasing need for improving Internet security.

Google has put off the deadline several times but July 1, 2018 appears to be the date when they will finally implement a new listing ‘Not Secure’ in the address bar of all websites that have not obtained an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate.  This could strongly deter visitors from ‘Not Secure’ websites and impact commerce. It is estimated that as many as one third of all websites will receive this admonishment. Blarneystone Internet Services, based in Amston, CT and serving both local and national clients offers a compliance solution.

It is easy to tell if your website is on a secure server. Open your website in Chrome. In the address bar if it shows a locked padlock with the word “Secure”, your website is secure. If you see an exclamation point or “Not Secure”, your website is in need of a secure certificate.

The new security requirement coincides with the release of Google’s search engine Chrome version 68. The new regulation impacts all websites that include any kind of text input such as login panels, contact forms, search bars, etc.  SSL is standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and browser. The SSL link ensures that all data passed between the two remain private.

Blarneystone will obtain the SSL certificate for website owners. This service includes certifying the owner of a domain name; purchase of a certificate; activation of the certificate; installation of the certificate; and instructions on updating the website to use HTTPS (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure) the encryption used for protecting highly sensitive transactions like online banking and online shopping. Cost for the service is $150. Blarneystone will also update the certificate annually for $150.

“The SSL certificate is a deal breaker for many online shoppers and for good reason,” noted Jim Smith, founder and director of Blarneystone Internet Services.  “Internet shoppers not only crave a depth of product choice, great pricing and fast shipping, but armor-clad security. This is another solid step in that direction.”

About Blarneystone Internet Services

Blarneystone Internet Service, a web design and hosting shop, was created in 1993. The main studio office is in Amston, CT with another office in Hartford, CT.

Managing Director and webmaster, Jim Smith gives presentations on the Internet to local groups. Jim wrote a book for fellow web designers titled, “How to Start a Home-Based Web Design Business” which is currently in its 4th edition. He has since co-written a book for graphic designers, “How to Start a Home-Based Graphic Design Business”.

Emerson Bearing Boston Rolls Out Extra Precision Bearings and Shares Tips for Optimal Performance

March 29, 2018 //  by admin

Some industrial jobs require precision beyond that provided by standard bearings. Emerson Bearing Boston, a bearing company catering to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) markets around the world, rolls out Extra Precision Bearings and shares tips to ensure their peak performance.

Extra precision bearings allow for extra fine tolerance and precision, and are ideal for applications with stringent requirements for speed (RPM) and guidance accuracy. Emerson Bearing Boston offers extra precision bearings from several top brands, including Barden, GMN, Nachi, NTN, and NSK.

There are two primary types of extra precision bearings: deep groove bearings and angular contact bearings. They are offered in many sizes, including miniature precision bearings, and are available with various cage types. Extremely versatile and among the most widely used types of bearings, deep groove bearings include full shoulders on each side of the inner and outer ring raceways, allowing for the easy addition of seals or shields. These bearings can handle radial loads, thrust loads, or a combination of both.

Angular contact bearings have one complete ring shoulder; the other ring shoulder is partially or completely removed. This allows them to have a larger ball, which offers greater load capacity and speed capability. Various cage designs are also available to meet specific high-speed requirements. Contact bearings can support thrust loads or a combination of thrust and radial loads. When implemented back-to-back or face-to-face, they can support thrust loads in both directions. Angular contact bearings are available in two types: separable or non-separable. These classifications denote whether the outer ring assembly can be removed from the inner ring. Separable angular contact bearings are especially useful when installing in a blind hole and in applications requiring press fits.

Closures and Cages for Extra Precision Bearings

Bearing closures serve to protect the bearings from internal damage caused by handling. Most bearing assemblies make use of bearing cages to create and maintain uniform ball spacing, reduce torque, and cut down on heat buildup. Extra precision bearings use cages made from stainless steel, bronze, or phenolic as these materials offer higher speeds and better loading capabilities.

“It’s important to understand the exact needs of the application in order to make a proper selection between standard bearings and extra precision bearings,” explained Steve Katz, Emerson Bearing Boston president.

Factors to Consider for Peak Performance

Two of the most important key factors to consider when selecting bearings are preloading and radial internal clearance. These elements should be closely examined to ensure bearings are able to operate efficiently in favorable conditions. The bearings must have the right amount of radial internal clearance, which is the total maximum movement possible for the inner ring in relation to the outer ring. Preloading, on the other hand, involves the removal of internal clearance in a bearing.

Shaft and housing fits are also important factors to keep in mind when employing extra precision bearings. It should also be determined whether extra precision bearings will perform better with grease or oil lubrication.

Katz continued, “It’s imperative to make sure the systems are set up for success before putting extra precision bearings into play. Our team of experts can assist in the right bearing selection for its specific application and requirements in order to equip customers with the knowledge needed to avoid costly pitfalls and downtime.”

Back for more lab work. Professional Carts Inc. expands Lab Division services.

March 27, 2018 //  by admin

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA…

Professional Carts, Inc., a top distributor of Salesmaker carts in the country, recently expanded its Laboratory division to better accommodate customers in that arena.  Professional Carts, Inc. clients include NASA, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and Sandia National Laboratory.

“Our carts were initially designed for the office equipment industry to ensure the safe transport of copiers, computers, printers, monitors etc. It didn’t take long for manufacturers and universities with laboratories to discover how our carts could be utilized for the safe transport of their sensitive electronic equipment—all while helping prevent injury to the person transporting those items,” said Barry Wolfert (known as the “Cartguy”), CEO of Professional Carts, Inc.

Said Wolfert, “The popularity of our carts for laboratory use, particularly with high-profile accounts like NASA, have led us to expand that part of the company in terms of account management, customer services, sales and support.”

Salesmaker carts come in several different models to accommodate transport of items of various sizes and weights. Operating much like a gurney used for ambulance transport, the carts can be raised or lowered in three-inch increments to adjust to the height of the surface where the item to be transported sits. This enables movers to slide heavy or bulky items onto the cart rather than to have to lift it. The same technique can be used to deliver the items to its destination—lowering or raising the cart to the height of the surface and then sliding the item off the cart.

Salesmaker carts can accommodate weights up to 1,000 pounds. Depending on the model, the carts weigh anywhere from 36 to 85 pounds. Designed for durability and years of use, the carts neatly and easily fold for easy storage.

Models in the Salesmaker carts line include: the Salesmaker PC Cart 294; Salesmaker Maxx 1000; Salesmaker Stairclimber 286; Salesmaker Low Profile 288; Salesmaker Easy Loader and the Salesmaker Heavy Duty 290.

Professional Carts Inc. also offers additional carts lines including the Demtruk Variable Height Carts, which are built with either 300-lb. or 500-lb. weight capacity.

For more information, visit www.ProfessionalCarts.com or call 800-281-2278. The company is located in San Diego, California and sells to companies in the U.S. and Canada as well as internationally.
