Team Vroomy Gears Up for the 8th Annual Renegade Run Obstacle Course Race in Support of Type 1 Diabetes Research and Cure

September 5, 2019 //  by admin

Team Vroomy is gearing up to race in Type One’s family-friendly, four-mile Renegade Run Obstacle Course Race on October 20, 2019, to raise awareness and funds for type 1 diabetes research at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), and to provide assistance for diabetes management and treatment to those living with the disease.

Vroomy Windsor

Led by Hingham residents Ashley and Robert Windsor, Team Vroomy has been participating in Renegade Run each year in support of Type One’s mission. Their son, Vroomy (now six-years-old) was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of two.

“The first Renegade Run our family did was prior to Vroomy’s diagnosis. The race is in Hingham and we wanted to support those in our community. Then, Vroomy was diagnosed and it affected us directly,” explained Ashley Windsor. “Vroomy is happy and doing well. Type 1 diabetes has not slowed him down at all! After his diagnosis, Team Vroomy was formed with four participants – my husband and family members – and our team has grown ever since.”

In 2017, Team Vroomy had 44 participants in support of Type One and Vroomy and last year, they had an impressive 77 participants (30 of them were children). The Windors hope to have 100 runners in this year’s race. Team Vroomy is easy to spot on the course, with their signature logo on their custom t-shirts and headbands. “We are so excited for this year’s Renegade Run! Team Vroomy is hoping to break the 100 person mark,” said Windsor.

She continued, “We’ll do anything we can to support Renegade Run and raise awareness and research funds for T1D. Our family is thrilled to do this race every year for as long type 1 exists. We are Team Vroomy!”

Event To Cure Type 1 Diabetes

Type One’s Renegade Run Obstacle Course Race will be held Sunday, October 20, 2019 at Bare Cove Park in Hingham. The family-friendly race begins at 9:00 AM and is open to the public. It will feature a course through four miles of paved trails and wooded terrain with over 25 obstacles including monkey bars to cross, walls and cargo nets to climb, and tunnels to crawl through. Event activities include a Mini Renegade Run for kids, live concert, food trucks, vendors and beer tent.

Funds raised will support Type One’s mission to raise funds and awareness for type 1 diabetes research at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). To date, Type One’s annual Renegade Run has generated tens of thousands of dollars to support the Faustman Lab at MGH which is focused on discovering and developing new treatments for type 1 diabetes, a vaccine for the reversal of long-term type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune diseases.

In addition to supporting the Faustman Lab at MGH, Type One donation and fundraising platforms help provide scholarships to local children with type 1 diabetes to attend type 1 diabetes camp, as well as providing qualifying recipients with assistance for diabetes management and treatment.

Harbor Mortgage, Braintree, MA-based, rolls out new program for senior condo owners and buyers in tandem with new federal provisions.

September 4, 2019 //  by admin

Harbor Mortgage Solutions’ new “Housing Wealth” program is designed to inform senior condominium owners and buyers of significant Federal Housing Authority (FHA) changes to its condominium financing regulations that will go into effect October 15, 2019.

According to U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD), there are more than 150,000 condo projects in the nation, and only 6.5 percent are approved to participate in the FHA’s mortgage insurance programs. The FHA’s revised rules loosen eligibility requirements and eliminate a number of restrictions. Most notably, the restoration of individual unit approval (called spot approval) that had been in place years ago. Among the FHA project approval revisions, the recertification process has been extended from two to three years.

What This Means to Senior Condo Owners and Buyers

Essentially, the FHA’s new policy will allow senior owners and buyers (62 and older) of certain condo units to be eligible for the FHA Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) reverse mortgage, even if the condominium project is not FHA approved.

The HECM reverse mortgage was developed and approved by Congress to enable owners 62 and older the ability to use a portion of their home equity (housing wealth) to increase financial security. Senior condo owners, previously excluded, may now be eligible for a HECM reverse mortgage to increase financial security, and eligible buyers may be able to purchase a condominium with a limited down payment without the obligation to make mortgage payments.

“The FHA’s changes to its condominium financing regulations is good news, as these changes eliminate current barriers that have prevented senior condo owners and buyers from using the FHA-insured reverse mortgage and other more favorable FHA financing options,” explained George Downey, CRMP, founder of Braintree-based Harbor Mortgage.

George Downey, a 40-year veteran in the Massachusetts real estate and residential mortgage business, leads Harbor Mortgage’s team of housing wealth management consultants. The team’s specialty is consulting to professional advisers and homeowners on the various methods housing wealth can be utilized and coordinated with financial management to achieve greater results and extend retirement security.

Downey continued, “Home equity, referred to as ‘housing wealth’, has become an important and valuable resource to improve financial planning and extend retirement security. If, how, and when to use it is a key question. Every situation is different and the options are increasing as new programs emerge to meet the changing times.”

Dedicated to serving the unique home financing and often complex needs of senior homeowners,Harbor Mortgage focuses on providing senior condo owners looking to age-in-place, as well as senior homeowners transitioning to retirement living and looking to purchase a condo, with a better understanding about housing wealth and the FHA HECM reverse mortgage.

Senior condo owners and buyers interested in learning more about their options may contact Harbor Mortgage at 781-843-5553, or visit HarborMortgage.com.

Harbor Mortgage Solutions, Inc. is a family-owned, residential mortgage company serving Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Portland, ME to Portland, OR trip makes a splash for Save The Wave campaign.

August 30, 2019 //  by admin

Just twenty years old, Josh Snell can’t legally purchase a 6-pack – but he’s doing everything he can to make sure the rings don’t end up in our oceans.

Single-use plastics and disposable culture is wreaking havoc on the earth’s fragile ecosystem. Josh has taken it upon himself to become part of the solution to this increasingly severe issue by traveling from Portland, Maine to Portalnd, Oregon with a message of ecology and inclusion.

To support the effort, Snell launched an awareness and fund-raising traveling apparel company called Save The Wave. He has set the lofty goal of donating one million dollars to Ocean Conservancy. Only a month into his project, his Go Fund Me alone has already raised over three thousand dollars.

It all started with a humble inventory of 100 hoodies purchased using money Josh saved up working as a server at a local restaurant in his hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania. After quickly doubling his investment, Josh took his operation to the next level by teaming up with a screen printer to convert secondhand clothing from thrift stores into “Save the Wave” branded merchandise. With profits from these efforts and the help of his skilled friends, Josh was able to purchase a small bus and convert it to a mobile shop and living space he nicknamed The Wave Saver.

In early August of 2019, Josh set out on cross country expedition in his bus in which he plans to follow the Atlantic coast, hug the USA / Mexico border and then work his way up the Pacific. All the while, he is stopping wherever he can to educate people about the threats our oceans face and encouraging them to spread the message with his T-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, jackets, fanny packs and other responsibly produced merchandise.  Revenue generated from sales keeps his wheels rolling and the rest goes to the non-profit, Ocean Conservancy.

Save The Wave Is already making a splash on major social media platforms. He has over 3K followers and counting on Instagram. The Save The Wave YouTube channel features engaging vlog style content with drone footage and impressive editing. Josh has even been featured on major media outlets including the radio station Rock 107.

Keep up with Save The Wave and find out when Josh and the Wave Saver is coming to your town. Old Colony Elder Services’ Adult Family Care Program Awarded 3-Year Accreditation

August 29, 2019 //  by admin

Old Colony Elder Services’ (OCES) Adult Family Care (AFC) Program has been awarded a three-year Accreditation status, the highest award available.

National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) awards the status of Accredited-3 years to organizations, such as OCES, that demonstrate strong performance of the functions outlined in the standards for Accreditation of Case Management for Long-Term Services and Supports (CM-LTSS). Earning NCQA’s Accreditation of CM-LTSS demonstrates that an organization is dedicated to coordinating the delivery of care in a person-centered and integrated manner to help individuals function optimally in their preferred setting.

OCES, the non-profit agency proudly serving older adults and individuals with disabilities throughout greater Plymouth County, elected to work with the NCQA to obtain accreditation primarily because their CM-LTSS Accreditation Program closely aligns with the goals of AFC and the values of OCES.

In March of 2018, OCES began the process of seeking accreditation for its AFC Program. This process involved every member of the AFC team – including the Program Director, Care Managers, Registered Nurses, Supervisors, Program Assistant and Program Specialist – as well as many other OCES staff who provided their expertise.

The yearlong process encompassed rewriting policies; constructing worksheets that shape the monthly interactions with consumers; creating new workflows that enable the program to run more efficiently; and establishing new program goals which will help the AFC program serve more diverse populations and expand deeper into communities currently underserved. The process also included the creation of a gap analysis and timeline in order to meet the MassHealth Accreditation deadline of June 30th, 2019. OCES submitted documentation that all standards were met; NCQA conducted off-site review as well as an onsite evaluation.

“NCQA accreditation is highly esteemed and we are very proud that our Adult Family Care Program has received this award,” said Nicole Long, CEO of OCES. “I would like to recognize and thank our AFC team for their diligence in navigating this detailed and in-depth process over the past year. This significant accomplishment is a direct reflection of the hard work and dedication of the AFC team and our entire organization that came together to see this process to its successful completion.”

OCES’ AFC program serves 151 caregivers and consumers in 39 towns throughout Plymouth, Bristol and Norfolk counties, who have a variety of physical, mental and emotional health needs.

About OCES

Founded in 1974, OCES proudly serves greater Plymouth County and surrounding communities. OCES is a private, non-profit organization headquartered in Brockton with a second office in Plymouth. OCES is designated as one of 26 Aging Services Access Points (ASAPs) in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. OCES’ mission is to support the independence and dignity of elders and people with disabilities by providing essential information and services that promote healthy and safe living. The agency offers a number of programs to serve seniors, individuals with disabilities, their families and caregivers. For more information call 508-584-1561 or visit www.ocesma.org.

National Grandparents Day is September 8th. OCES’ Family Caregiver Support Program Focuses on Raising Awareness of Resources Available to Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

August 29, 2019 //  by admin

Caregiving takes a financial, emotional and physical toll on caregivers, according to research by the Family Caregiver Alliance. The Family Caregiver Support Program (FCSP) at Old Colony Elder Services (OCES) provides essential support and resources to family caregivers.

OCES is a non-profit agency proudly serving older adults and individuals with disabilities throughout greater Plymouth County. OCES’ Family Caregiver Support Program works with people of all ages in their service area, providing essential support and resources to family caregivers, including grandparents raising grandchildren.

“OCES recognizes that each caregiver’s situation is unique and complex,” explained Nicole Long, CEO of OCES. “With National Grandparents Day around the corner, we’re focused on raising awareness about the Family Caregiver Support Program and the many resources available to grandparents who are raising grandchildren.”

The goal of the OCES’ Family Caregiver Support Program is to reassure families that they are not alone and that resources are available to assist them in their caregiving situation. This program provides one-on-one support to create a personalized plan outlining available resources (which includes OCES programs as well as community resources) that are applicable to their caregiving situation.

These resources may include caregiver support groups as well as educational workshops or programs that share techniques to help grandparents and other family caregivers with stress reduction, time management, goal setting, problem-solving, relaxation and more.

“Caregiving is a difficult balancing act and oftentimes family caregivers are so busy caring for loved ones that they neglect to take care of themselves,” said Long. “OCES’ Family Caregiver Support Program can assist grandparents in developing a self-care plan and direct them to resources that would be most helpful in their particular caregiving situation.”

Grandparents and other family caregivers are encouraged to learn more about caregiver support services by contacting OCES at 508-584-1561 or visiting OCES’ website: https://www.ocesma.org/getting-started/caregiver-support/
