Tarlow Breed Hart & Rodgers, P.C. has a long history of success in advising family businesses.

January 9, 2009 //  by admin

Edward Tarlow

The Boston-based law firm of Tarlow, Breed, Hart, & Rodgers, P.C. (TBHR) has long embraced family businesses as an integral part of its practice. To that end, TBHR has been an active member and supporter of several family business-based organizations, including the Family Firm Institute’s New England Chapter, and also the Family Business Association, Inc., an organization established to recognize excellence in Massachusetts family businesses.

One of the cornerstones of TBHR’s business is counseling family businesses in the day-to-day running of their organization, and also in the critical and often sensitive area of business succession and estate planning.

Said Edward D. Tarlow, Esq., a Founding Member of TBHR, “Business is all about trends. For the longest time, corporate America was seen as the Goliath, with small family businesses being the perennial Davids. Now, with all the bailouts and difficulties on Wall Street, family businesses have shown resilience that you don’t see in corporate America.” He added, “Mass Truck Body and Trailer, Inc. of Chelsea is one of our family business clients that truly embodies that resilience – in fact, they’ve just recently celebrated their 50th anniversary.  It is family businesses such as Mass Truck that will help lay the groundwork for an economic recovery, and their histories are an important part of their current success.”

When Anthony DiRocco and his partners started Mass Truck in a rented tin garage in Everett, the building had dirt floors and no plumbing. To keep warm, they had a fire burning in a barrel, just like you would see in an old 1930’s movie. In 1964, the company moved to its current location at 60 Arlington Street in Chelsea.

In the 1970s, Mass Truck expanded, opening Trailer Equipment, Inc. in the building next door. When, Anthony DiRocco and his original partners parted ways, DiRocco brought his eldest son, John, into the business. Shortly after John joined the Mass Truck, his brother, Mike, started at Trailer Equipment, and their hard work continued this winning combination.

With the sudden passing of Anthony DiRocco in 1987, John DiRocco faced a similar dilemma as his father had faced years earlier:  continue the family business, take on new partners, or close up shop. Even though the sacrifices would be many, he opted to continue his father’s legacy of providing affordable truck body and trailer repair, and superior customer service with satisfaction guaranteed. It’s a decision John says he’s never regretted.

Today, with its 12 bays and staff of highly trained, certified truck body service technicians, Mass Truck Body & Trailer, Inc. remains a fixture in the truck parts and repair business, taking a backseat to no other repair shop when it comes to price, quality, or workmanship – something of which Anthony DiRocco would be most proud – as well as for his sons’ sacrifice and hard work.

“The story of family businesses, such as the DiRocco’s and Mass Truck Body & Trailer, is one of the reasons our firm has made advising families and family businesses such a large part of our business law practice. There are not only succession issues to be considered, but also estate planning, taxes, and a host of related corporate issues, as well. We provide the kind of counsel in these areas which can help the family and the business transition smoothly to the next generation, whether that means continuing the business, selling it, or even expanding,” said Tarlow.

About Tarlow, Breed, Hart & Rodgers, P.C.:

Formed in 1991, Tarlow, Breed, Hart & Rodgers, P.C. is committed to providing high quality, comprehensive legal services to its clients.  Featuring a breadth and depth of experience and perspective usually found only at larger law firms, Tarlow, Breed, Hart & Rodgers. Can’t buy me love…Valentine’s Day in a recession.

January 6, 2009 //  by admin

NORWELL, MA…

With Valentine’s Day coming in the not-so-distant future, many recession-strapped Valentines are wondering what they can do for their sweetie this year. Especially since fancy dinners at five-star restaurants, bouquets of flowers and treating your Valentine to a day of pampering at spa aren’t exactly in a lot of people’s budgets these days.

Still, according to love expert Paul Falzone, CEO of The Right One and Together Dating–one of the world’s largest brick-and-mortar dating services with more than 60 offices nationwide–just because times might be tough, it doesn’t mean romance must suffer.

“Valentine’s Day is about love and romance. Somehow that got twisted into how much you spend. Nothing could be further from the truth. It’s truly the thought that counts. And if the economy has made people stop and really put some thought into the little things they can do for that special someone in their life on Valentine’s Day, they’re going to be pleasantly surprised both with how little it costs and the results,” says Falzone.

Here are some budget-friendly, thoughtful gestures you might want to try this Valentine’s Day:

  • Leave a “racy” picture on your mate’s cell phone.
  • Text a romantic message at a time of day when you know things get rather hectic and your sweetie could use a pick-me-up.
  • Leave a chocolate or single rose on your Valentine’s pillow.
  • Use a bar of soap to draft a love note on your bathroom mirror.
  • Eat in for Valentine’s day with candles providing the only light. Better yet, spread out a blanket and have your meal as a picnic on the living room floor—even better if you have a fireplace.
  • Instead of a day at the spa, take turns giving each other back rubs.
  • Have a glass of your loved one’s favorite drink ready and waiting for them when they get home. If your loved one likes beer or wine, serve it in a frosted glass—unless they prefer it warm.
  •  Celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 13 or 15 to make it “your holiday” and not one shared with the rest of the world.
  • Pick one household chore your Valentine usually does and surprise them by doing it before they get a chance to (e.g. making the bed). It may not sound romantic, but the thought will most certainly count.

“You know, you keep hearing about the doom and gloom of today’s economy, but it actually presents a lot of opportunities. One is to show the person you love how much by using your imagination and not your checkbook. And that, my friends, is the secret to making Valentine’s Day one he or she will always remember,” said Falzone.

Help is on the way
Catering to more than 300,000 members at more than 60 locations throughout North America, The Right One and Together Dating are the largest brick and mortar dating services in the industry, offering a more consistent product, a greater number of potentially compatible mates and added value of flexibility in transferring memberships to another geographic region.

January 2, 2009 //  by admin

TINLEY PARK, IL…

Over the years, DirectBuy has been recognized for giving families the opportunity to buy directly from the manufacturer and save hundreds, even thousands, on home improvement projects, furniture, appliance and many other household items. DirectBuy has also earned a reputation for its generosity in the communities they serve. A fine example of that is DirectBuy of Tinley Park for its recent donation to Catholic Charities and Goodwill.

DirectBuy of Tinley Park donated 12 computers, complete with keyboard and monitors, to Goodwill, located in Orland Park, Illinois. In addition, they also donated several brand new pieces of furniture and appliances to Catholic Charities, including a washing machine, twin bedroom set and living room fireplace.

“We’ve been supporters of Catholic Charities and Goodwill for a long time now. Yet with these difficult economic times we’re currently in, we wanted to do a little more this year, something that went beyond writing a check. By contributing furniture and appliances to Catholic Charities and the computers to Goodwill, we’re providing items that we know will be put to good use,” said I.J. Sell, owner of DirectBuy of Tinley Park.

That type of generosity is fairly standard for DirectBuy. Showroom owners nationwide donate to any number of organizations, and have shown a particular affinity for making contributions to children/family-oriented organizations like Boys & Girls Club, YMCA and children’s hospitals.

Since 1971, DirectBuy franchises have offered members the opportunity to enjoy enormous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products and accessories by buying wholesale, directly from the manufacturer. Protect your pipes! Hub Plumbing & Mechanical advises homeowners to take precautions before leaving town for warmer climes.

January 1, 2009 //  by admin

DATELINE: SOUTH BOSTON, MA…
So you’re lucky enough to be able to leave town for warmer climes this winter… What do you need to do to prepare your plumbing during your absence?

According to John Wood, founder and CEO of Hub Plumbing & Mechanical in Boston, warns that it is critical to protect your pipes. “Even occasional snowbirds who are only leaving town for a week or two need to take some commonsense precautions. Travelers look forward to escaping freezing temperatures without fully considering what happens at home when the temperature is plummeting and the coldest weather of the season is forecast while they’re away. ”

Wood offers some simple measures that can help protect pipes from freezing while homeowners relax in warmer climes.
•    Always leave the heat on. Never lower the thermostat below 55 degrees Fahrenheit no matter how well insulated your home may be.
•    Be prepared. Double check outdoor faucets, making sure that the interior shut-off valves leading to the faucets have been closed, and that the outside spigot was left open and drained prior to the arrival of freezing temperatures. An alternative to this procedure is to speak with your plumber about installing frost-free sillcocks where the shutoff valve extends inside the house away from the cold, eliminating the need to shut off the water supply to the outside spigots.
•    Insulate pipes that located on outside walls, particularly in an older home with minimal insulation.
•    Open the doors of kitchen and bathroom cabinets that are located on outer walls to let the warm air in to keep pipes that are located there from freezing.
•    Make sure that pipes in unheated basements, crawlspaces, or garages are insulated. Drain pipes that are not in use during the winter.
•    Have a contingency plan in place if a storm causes an extended power outage in your absence. Make sure that someone has access to your home and can monitor the inside temperature. In extreme cases, particularly if you have had pipes freeze before, instruct whoever is keeping an eye on things to keep a trickle of water running from the faucet since running water usually doesn’t freeze.
•    If your caretaker should find a frozen pipe during an extended power outage, they should turn off the main shut-off water valve and keep the faucet open to relieve pressure as the ice melts.
•    If a pipe has burst they SHOULD NOT try to thaw the pipe since this could cause electrocution. Leave the number of your licensed plumbing professional to handle this emergency.

Notes Wood, “With a little advance planning homeowners can enjoy peace of mind and escape the prospect of returning home to the devastating aftermath of burst pipes.”

About Hub Plumbing & Mechanical
Hub Plumbing & Mechanical was established in 1999 and now includes a staff of 16 full time employees. Hub Plumbing & Mechanical was recently highlighted in a new book entitled “The Celebrity Experience” where Hub Plumbing & Mechanical’s Red Carpet Service was cited as an example of how it’s possible to create faithful life long customers by showering them with treatment usually reserved for celebrities.

Hub Plumbing and Mechanical’s signature Red Carpet service features experienced teams of licensed technicians who not only protect your floors with a red carpet, but also cover their work boots with stain-resistant booties, wear ID badges for security purposes, and arrive on time and smartly dressed in crisp, clean uniforms.

DirectBuy of Greater Vancouver donates washer/dryer to Servants Anonymous Society of Surrey.

December 30, 2008 //  by admin

COQUITLAM, BC…

While DirectBuy has made it’s name by giving families the opportunity to buy directly from the manufacturer and save hundreds, even thousands, on home improvement projects, furniture, appliance and many other household items, it’s reputation for generosity also speaks for itself. A fine example of that is DirectBuy of Greater Vancouver’s recent donation of a washer/dryer to Servants Anonymous Society of Surrey.

The Servants Anonymous Society, founded ten years ago, was set up to help sexually exploited young women get their lives back on track by providing secure housing and teaching them life skills. Servants Anonymous’ ASK Centre for Learning is designed to provide each participant with an opportunity to learn the personal and occupational skills required to help them obtain and maintain employment, return to school, and/or raise their children on a full-time basis.

“The Servants Anonymous Society is doing phenomenal work with these young women, many of whom come from very troubled backgrounds,” Peter Ruetz, owner of DirectBuy of Greater Vancouver. “While the retail value of the washer/dryer we donated is about $1800, you really can’t put a dollar value on helping a person get their life back and that’s really what they do at Servants Anonymous.”

That type of generosity is fairly standard for DirectBuy. Showroom owners across North America donate to any number of organizations, and have shown a particular affinity for making contributions to children/family-oriented organizations like Boys & Girls Club, YMCA, children’s hospitals and the Salvation Army.

“One of the keys to helping these young women get their lives back on track is providing them with a safe and clean environment in which to learn life skills. Something as simple as being able to take care of your own laundry can go a long way towards that young woman standing up on her own two feet. DirectBuy’s generous donation will go a long way in helping us help these women,” said Kelly Ferguson, facilities manager at Servants Anonymous Society.

Since 1971, DirectBuy has helped consumers enjoy enormous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products, and accessories, by providing an avenue to purchase directly from the manufacturer. With four convenient locations serving the Greater Vancouver area, DirectBuy offers consumers a comfortable, country-club setting, where they finally have the financial control of buying direct.
