HINGHAM AND NORWELL, MA… From spooky costumes to “haunted” houses and trick-or-treating, Halloween is an extravagant event enjoyed by many families.
But, for children and families with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, the real “ghouls” of Halloween are all the sugary, and often irresistible, treats. So, how do families with diabetes handle an overabundance of sweets?
The founders of Type One Fitness of Norwell, MA, the first athletic center to focus on type 1 diabetes wellness, share helpful tips with families, while still leaving room for lots of fun:
Limiting how much candy is consumed is key. Reading the nutrition information on the package will provide a better understanding of the size of a serving. For chocolate bar treats that are the individually-wrapped smaller snack size, one serving is approximately two snack size pieces. However, it’s not easy for children (and even most adults) to stick to a limit of one serving. Be clear with your child and tell them exactly how many pieces of candy they may eat and when it is okay to do so.
Stay on top of how much insulin is needed. Since the human body is so complex, not all people will process insulin the same way. Factors like time of day, stress levels, and physical activity can make these numbers more difficult to predict. Essentially, sweets are considered carbohydrates and should be treated as such within the day’s overall consumption. It’s important to note that because candy contains fat, if it is eaten in excess, it can get tricky and affect blood sugar. Fats can slow the digestion process down, changing the delivery of the insulin. So, working in any sweets on Halloween takes a bit of planning around healthy meals, snacks and exercise.
Be aware that children may “sneak” candy. Let’s face it – sweets are hard to resist. On Halloween, parents and caregivers of children with type 1 diabetes need to keep a close eye on their child’s sugar and carbohydrate consumption.
Balance treats with healthier fiber and protein in between. Fiber and protein help stabilize blood sugar levels. Peanut butter or nut butter on celery sticks or apple slices, vegetables cut into sticks with yogurt dip, slices of cheese and protein bars are a few healthy snack options.
Get everyone moving. Exercising also helps stabilize blood sugar. With all the Halloween excitement, from trick-or-treating to games and running around in general, it’s fairly easy to get the kids involved in fun activities and moving around.
According to Type One Fitness co-founder Tyson Sunnerberg who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 21 years old and now has a young daughter diagnosed with type 1, “Eliminating the sweets on Halloween is nearly impossible. Even if you don’t have sweets on hand in your home, children will likely come across candy and other sugary snacks through their friends, activities, clubs, Halloween parties, and so on. Bear in mind that if chocolate, candy or other sweet snack is consumed, it should be done so in moderation and incorporated with healthy meals, nutritious snacks and exercise.”

Preventing Costly Breakdowns –
Emerson Bearing Boston Shares Tips to Increase Efficiency & Extend V-Belt Life
BOSTON, MA… Emerson Bearing, a Boston, MA-based bearing company catering to niche markets nationwide and the sister company of Action Bearing which serves the New England market, offers tips to extend the life and increase systems efficiency of V-belts.
The V-belt is an important component of many industrial and manufacturing systems. In an effort to help reduce the need for frequent maintenance and to prevent costly and unexpected breakdowns, Emerson Bearing recommends implementing the following best practices to extend your V-belt lifetime and boost overall V-belt quality:
Use the correct installation procedures. While you may initially consider saving time by rolling the V-belt onto the drive to install it, this comes with certain risks if installers neglect first to loosen the motor. This installation method presents a safety hazard, potentially damaging sheaves and belts, and putting heavy loads on the belt and the system’s shafts and support bearings.
Choose the right-sized belt. There have been certain technological advancements in V-belts regarding their materials, tensile cord advancements, construction methods, and cross-section profiles. They’re available in a range of profiles, sizes, and widths. To optimize their performance and prevent V-belt damage, you’ll need to select the ideal V-belt for your specific application. If your belt is loose-fitting, this will lead to decreased efficiency and life, making it important to ensure the V-belt is the right fit.
Regularly check sheaves for wear. V-belt users often replace these components while neglecting to check for signs of wear on the sheaves. These signs may include polished, ridged groove sidewalls or groove sidewall cupping. If the sheaves display signs of wear, it’s best to replace them, seeing as worn sheaves can take off as much as 50 percent of the V-belt’s lifetime.
Tension the belt properly. The best method for tensioning belts and maximizing their longevity is to use a belt tension tool. Relying solely on touch to gauge tension could make it more challenging. Too much tension will increase the risk of the band breaking while greatly reducing bearing life. Conversely, too little tension will cause the belts to slip over time due to high temperature and noise levels.
“We are dedicated to helping customers not only find the right V-belt solution for their application, but to provide tools and information necessary to help enhance performance and extend service life,” said Steve Katz, president of Emerson Bearing. “Emersonbearing.com’s online library contains comprehensive information regarding the selection, application and maintenance of bearings and related parts.”

First diabetes-specific fitness center to open in Norwell, MA. Building a culture of good health with fitness, nutrition and support.
HINGHAM AND NORWELL, MA… The best way to predict how well someone will manage their diabetes is by how much support they get from family, friends and their local community.
Type One is building that supportive community.
The first athletic center to focus on type 1 diabetes wellness, Type One Fitness, is now under construction at 386 Washington Street, Route 53, Norwell, MA. Individuals and families living with diabetes and the local community will be attracted to the center for its credentialed fitness trainers, nutritionists and state of the art exercise equipment and studios.
Type One is committed to expanding and enhancing support for the many families and individuals living with diabetes throughout the South Shore. The new 11,000+ square foot first-class wellness facility will be occupied by Type One Fitness (6,000+ square feet) with plans to include services such as massage therapy, Pilates, physical therapy, etc. to complement the facility.
About 1 in 500 people in the U.S. are living with type 1 diabetes. Less than one-third of people with type 1 diabetes in the U.S. are achieving target blood glucose control levels. Better fitness, better nutrition, and better support can change that.
Type One Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Hingham, MA is dedicated to providing essential funding for research for a cure for type 1 diabetes while also helping to ensure that those living with the disease have the support and resources they need to survive, strive and achieve their dreams. They are launching Type One Fitness to provide a higher-level fitness and personal training experience where clients and members can achieve long-term lifestyle changes through exercise and nutrition, and where all-around well-being is enhanced through unique features, services, and amenities.
Type One Fitness will provide a fully integrated health program for type 1 diabetes patients and the general public. The center offers a place for real time conversation and education for those living with type 1 diabetes. A place that improves the lives of others in the community by offering support not only for individuals with diabetes, but also for parents and caregivers, partners, siblings and friends as well. Outside of a medical facility, there is currently no facility that welcomes and merges a comprehensive type 1 diabetes connection with the general public. Type One Fitness does just that while enabling those affected by the disease to obtain any non-medical support that they need.
“There has been a significant increase in new diagnosed cases of type 1 and type 2 diabetes among youth and adults in the U.S.,” explained Paul Foti, co-founder of Type One. “This is extremely concerning. Living with type 1 diabetes, which is an autoimmune disease, is a lifelong challenge. As a community, we must do all that we can through awareness, education, and support.”
Type One Fitness will provide clients and members with a daily program of exercise and a healthy approach that perfectly suits their lifestyles and needs. Along with Certified Personal Trainers, Nutritionists, and Life Coaches, the facility will be equipped with the latest technology, media, cardiovascular equipment, ellipticals, bikes, rowers, treadmills, strength training, free weights and functional and flexibility machines.
Type One Fitness will provide a place where the type 1 diabetes community can find support for the autoimmune disease and end the stigma of what type 1 diabetes is and who it affects through education and awareness programming.
Type One Fitness is the brainchild of Foti and Type One co-founder Tyson Sunnerberg, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 21 years old and knows firsthand that the right resources and support make all the difference in the world when it comes to managing this disease. Five years ago, at the age of five, Sunnerberg’s daughter Elyse was also diagnosed with type 1, which intensified his drive toward a cure, and provided a firsthand understanding of the constant challenges the entire family faces when living with an individual with type 1 diabetes.
Foti continued, “Type One Fitness is committed to building a culture of good health, well-being and inclusion for youth and families, as well as to provide health and human services for its members and their families.”
Construction is being handled by Callahan/Hoffman Company, Inc. of Norwell, MA.
A capital campaign for the build-out is underway.
