BILLERICA, MA… Massachusetts is among the top states for slate roofing, with two percent of single-family homes featuring slate roofs. Many homeowners with slate roofs want to “go solar”. However, existing methods of installation on a slate roof require removal of nearly half the roof. Until now.
Solar Slate Solutions, based in Billerica, MA, has announced a new product, the Solar Slate Plate, which allows solar panels to be attached without compromising the beauty and integrity of the slate roof.
Solar Slate provides an ideal solution for solar panel installers, solar companies, roofers, electricians and others who have struggled with installing solar panels on a slate roof.
“Our Solar Slate Plate has an innovative patented spacer technology that enables installers and roofers to provide seamless installation while saving time,” explained David Tomolillo, president and owner of Solar Slate Solutions, Inc. “Our product installs quickly, looks clean, doesn’t require slate removal and is affordable.”
David spent the last four years developing, testing, manufacturing and patenting this revolutionary new product for mounting solar panels on slate roofs. Solar Slate Plate also works on synthetic slate, stone, French tile or flat stone, as well as on wood cedar roofing.
Solar Slate Plate takes minutes to install and uses a patented spacer technology to ensure no slates are damaged during the installation process or beyond.
The innovative Solar Slate Kit includes everything needed to install 20 mounts. It includes:
20 x Solar Slate Plate Flashing; 20 x Adjustable Spacers; 20 x 5.5” Stainless Lag Bolts and 20 x Stainless Washers. Solar Slate will also recommend the appropriate sealant options.
Typically, the installation of solar panels on a slate roof requires the actual removal of slates. With Solar Slate’s innovative solution, that is no longer the case.
Solar Slate Solutions caters to suppliers and installers of solar panels, including solar companies, roofers, electricians and general contractors, in commercial or residential installation projects.

The sun rises on Safe Harbor Vineyard Haven. Solar energy installation completed.
Safe Harbor Vineyard Haven has a brighter future for many reasons. The marina and boatyard recently installed 32 solar modules/solar panels on top of its marina offices.
Battling the forecasted hurricane in mid-September, the solar energy system was installed and is engineered to withstand up to 140mph winds.
Chris Scott, General Manager of Safe Harbor Vineyard Haven and Safe Harbor Edgartown, commented, “We are delighted to add solar energy to our Vineyard Haven marina. This new, robust system helps offset our energy usage to become increasingly neutral.”
He added, “The solar installation is part of our organization’s focus on renewable energy and environmental stewardship.”
The solar project is as large as Eversource will currently permit and includes 32 modules, 400 watts each. The 12.8kW system can generate 16,752kWh annually.
Safe Harbor Vineyard Haven, an AMI Accredited Clean and Resilient Marina, is a full-service facility that includes slips, valet racks (in & out rack service), inside storage, mechanic shop, and fuel dock. An angler’s paradise for sport fishing, the surrounding waters are ideal for reeling in striped bass, bonita, bluefish, and more.

Spindle Bearing Success. Emerson Bearing Shares 3 Key Factors in Machine Tool Bearing Selection.
BOSTON, MA… Emerson Bearing, a Boston, MA-based bearing company catering to niche markets nationwide and the sister company of Action Bearing which serves the New England market, shares 3 factors for spindle bearing success in machine tool applications.
Today’s machine tools rely on various specialized components that allow them to operate smoothly and efficiently while holding tight tolerances. High quality precision bearings are particularly important to the accuracy and reliability of machining equipment as they are responsible for directing and enhancing spindle movement. These components generally consist of balls or rollers that are positioned between inner and outer raceways.
Ceramic hybrid spindle bearings can provide increased spindle speed, improved stiffness, and enhanced resistance to high temperatures. The ceramic balls used in these bearings operate at lower temperatures, which prolongs the service life of lubricants. They also operate at lower vibration levels, resulting in increased spindle rigidity.
Other common types of bearings include high precision cylindrical roller bearings, angular contact bearings and ball screw support bearings.
When selecting ball or roller bearings, there are three key factors to keep in mind: contact angle, preload, and system rigidity.
Contact Angle is the line of contact along which the ball bearing touches the raceways of the assembly. This angle is determined by the thrust loading and radial play. Ideally, the contact angle should be 15°—this is the optimal balance between axial and radial capacity and rigidity. To increase the axial rigidity, some systems have a contact angle of 25°. No matter which angle works best for your system, it’s essential to choose the bearings that operate best at the given angle.
Preload is a force that holds the raceway and rolling element surfaces under pressure. It’s a constant elastic compressive force that stops the parts from moving in an uncontrolled manner (either axially or radially) even when they’re under load. The right bearings will tolerate this additional force without breakage.
System Rigidity. Machine tools generate several different forces that ball and roller bearings need to be able to account for. Factors such as housing stiffness and bearing stiffness determine the machine’s system rigidity and ability to produce consistently precise results.
Supporting the unique needs of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) markets across the nation, Emerson Bearing experts can assist with selection of the appropriate bearings, maintenance tips and more.
