Thirty-Eighth Avenue Photography

Thirty-Eighth Avenue Photography Offers Corporate Photo Tips

April 22, 2021 //  by admin

According to Debi Cramer founder and principal photographer of Thirty-Eighth Avenue Photography, the right images create that all-important connection with customers, employees, employers, partners, investors and vendors, and help professionals and businesses stand out in the marketplace.

With a studio in Plymouth, MA, Cramer provides corporate portrait photography for business professionals, job seekers and others, as well as corporate brand photography that includes marketing materials, websites and product pages for businesses of all sizes and any industry.

Cramer shares the following corporate photography tips and considerations to help ensure photography that will make a connection:

Company website – Be sure that all the corporate portraits (headshots) are taken in a similar format and look friendly and professional. Consider including the “nuts and bolts” images of the office space, which may include the reception area featuring the company logo on the wall. If the corporate photos are for a manufacturing company, ensure that all machinery is completely clean. Any big machinery, such as forklifts, must be static – similar to a still-life image. Decide ahead of time whether all employees should wear a company shirt with a logo. Hard hats must be clean. Even in a medical or laboratory setting, all medical/lab coats must be spotless and pressed. Companies need to be cognizant of message they are sending. The details matter.

Annual Reports – Annual reports should include headshots of senior management as well as location shots. An important marketing piece, the annual report should also include compelling photos such as product close-ups which have that “wow factor” and images that communicate the brand, vision and accomplishments. For example, a manufacturing or construction company may want to take project shots while the project is being completed over the course of the year.

Corporate events – For business events such as a grand opening or ribbon cutting, be sure to obtain photos of the principals alone, then in the ribbon cutting line holding scissors. Individual photos as well as photos of three staff grouped together or in a department are best. Be cognizant of what is in the background. Make sure there are no distractions and no movement.

Corporate portraits – Corporate portraits literally serve as the “face” of the company (see the section on company website above). But, corporate portraits are not just for employees and business owners. A professional headshot is a must for any business professional or job seeker, particularly those in sales, administration and similar positions. A corporate portrait may be used for LinkedIn, to improve social media pages, and added as a thumbnail headshot on a résumé. A professional corporate portrait may also be used for sport, theatre and art profiles.

Cramer noted, “Always ask for references and to see samples of a corporate photographer’s work. Knowing in advance about usage rights and pricing is also key. More importantly, your photographer should be asking about your (or the company’s) objective and goals, to ensure that the photography is an appropriate representation.”

Debi Cramer has spent many years photographing people, places and things all over the world. With a background in fine arts, textile and graphic design, Cramer shoots with a designer’s eye, which produces stunning images. Her international travels, study abroad experience in Edinburgh, Scotland as well as living in Singapore span more than two decades.

Thirty-Eighth Avenue Photography offers 7 tips for taking stunning holiday photos

October 23, 2020 //  by admin

Even though holiday celebrations may look a lot different this year, the tradition of a taking a holiday family photo continues and will likely take on even more importance.

Thirty-Eighth Avenue Photography, a commercial and fine art photography studio located in Plymouth, MA, offers the following 7 tips for taking stunning holiday photos:

“Matchy-matchy” is a good thing. Coordinate outfits color-wise. For example, if one person is wearing red plaid, make sure other family members are also wearing red or a complimentary color. Avoid wearing metallic. Solid colors such as white, red, green, gold and black are best. In groups of four, only one person should be wearing plaid or a pattern. And yes, coordinating pajamas work just fine. Don’t be afraid to incorporate textures by wearing a shearling jacket or polar fleece.

When it comes to lighting, avoid the sun and flames.  If you’re outdoors, don’t shoot into the sun as it washes out the photo. Campfire shots are not recommended as it’s difficult to frame people around a fire, plus there’s a lot of smoke and the glow affects lighting. If you’re indoors, use a flash to avoid a yellow tinge and shadows in your photo. Also, leave any lit candles or lamps out of your holiday shot.

Backdrop is key. Simplicity is key when it comes to backdrop. Limit what’s behind you. Multicolored lights on a Christmas tree in the background works well as the lights will fade out. Another great backdrop example is the side of a barn at a Christmas tree farm. Or, just the trees in the background (check your viewfinder to ensure it doesn’t appear as if branches are coming out of the top of someone’s head). If you wanted to get more elaborate, consider the tree backdrop with everyone seated on the tailgate of a red pick-up truck.

Frame it just right. Mind the spacing between family members as they often stand or sit too far apart. Remember to leave enough space above people’s heads in the photo too. Otherwise, when the photo is framed, it cuts across the tops of heads. If you’re indoors, keep it simple and take a tight shot. No need to show the entire home in the photo. Again, be aware of any background items that make it appear too busy or as if the item is part of someone’s shoulder.

The pose. Try to avoid the stiff “super posed” portrait of yesteryear. If a large family is gathered, make sure that everyone is looking at the camera. Mind all hand, arm and leg positioning. Raising an arm or waving is not only distracting, it may block another’s face in the photo. In a photo with five or fewer – hugging, holding hands and engaging with one another appears natural.

Simple props. The family photo can be fun and celebrate the season with some very simple props. The easiest prop is clothing such as scarves, hats and mittens. Other tasteful props include a nostalgic wooden sled, ice skates tied together and dangling over a shoulder, someone holding skis up or ski poles (pointed down).

Costumes and mischief. A holiday photo really serves as a memory and marks a special moment. You may want to refrain from “cheesy” photos of pets adorned with holiday lights, or dad wearing a Grinch costume, or play-fighting with those ski-pole props mentioned above.

“There’s quite a bit that goes in to creating an amazing, yet natural holiday photo,” explained Debi Cramer, founder and principle photographer at Thirty-Eighth Avenue Photography. Cramer should know, having spent many years photographing people, places and things all over the world. With a background in fine arts, textile and graphic design, Cramer shoots with a designer’s eye, which produces stunning images that are highly marketable. Her international travels, study abroad experience in Edinburgh, Scotland as well as living in Singapore span more than two decades.

Holiday Front Porch Photo

Prefer to leave the holiday photo to a pro? Cramer offers the option of a professional holiday “front porch” photo.

Cramer continued, “Front porch photos with decorative hints, using the gentle approach of clothing colors and textures, brings the holiday into the photo. For those who would like a professional photo for the holidays, Thirty-Eighth Avenue Photography is offering an on-location option and capturing holiday front porch moments.”

Thirty-Eighth Avenue Photography launches “Ugly LinkedIn Profile Photo” contest

September 15, 2020 //  by admin

Some executives favor their high school yearbook likeness. Others just choose to ignore the aging process. Either way, an outdated profile photo is not the best way to represent yourself on LinkedIn, the world’s largest professional network.

Debi Cramer
Debi Cramer, founder and and principle photographer at Thirty-Eighth Avenue Photography

According to Debi Cramer, founder and principle photographer at Thirty-Eighth Avenue Photography in Plymouth, MA, “There are a number of professional profile photo ‘no-no’s’ including scowling, wearing sunglasses or clothing items with prints, as well as standing alongside other people – or next to someone’s shoulder and arm in the case of a cropped image.”

Professional Image Counts…and May Influence Connections

A LinkedIn profile photo is also not the best place to show off a cherished boat, sports car or pet. It’s okay to wear ski goggles if you’re a ski resort owner, but not okay if you’re a ski enthusiast and your profession is selling life insurance. It should be noted that NOT having a profile photo doesn’t work in your favor either. Will fellow networkers and recruiters want to connect? Perhaps not. Those who do have a profile photo on LinkedIn may receive up to 21 times more profile views than those lacking profile photos (according to LinkedIn).

In an effort to help professionals improve upon their LinkedIn profile photos, Thirty-Eighth Avenue Photography, a commercial and fine art photography studio, is holding an “Ugly LinkedIn Profile Photo” contest now through November 31, 2020.

Three people will be selected for the “Ugly LinkedIn Profile Photo” and will receive a professional portrait taken at Thirty-Eighth Avenue Photography’s new studio at 27 Danforth Lane in Plymouth, MA 02360.

To enter the contest, simply email your LinkedIn URL to Debi Cramer, founder and principle photographer at Thirty-Eighth Avenue Photography,  38thavephotography@gmail.com. Winners will be notified by email.
