September 4, 2024 //  by admin

BROCKTON AND PLYMOUTH, MA… Old Colony Elder Services (OCES), the largest provider of in-home and community-based services for older adults and people living with disabilities in Southeastern Massachusetts, has been awarded a three-year grant from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs to support the expansion of their behavioral health program and service area.

Formerly known as Elder Mental Health Outreach Team (EMHOT) and Elder Mobile Outreach Team (EMOT), Massachusetts’ behavioral health program for older adults is now known as Behavioral Health Outreach for Aging Populations.

Behavioral Health Outreach for Aging Populations
Through this program, behavioral health clinicians provide in-depth assessments and develop care plans that may include individualized counseling, referrals, and care coordination with community resources. Services are provided directly to the consumer. Clinicians can meet them at their home or at a site that is convenient for the consumer, such as a nearby park.

OCES’ service area for this program has expanded beyond the Greater Brockton communities and now includes Bridgewater, Lakeville, Middleboro and Wareham. The program provides one-on-one counseling with appropriate services and support to improve overall physical, behavioral and emotional health, and to reduce isolation. The program also provides care coordination, education, information, referrals and connections to community services. There is also information and referrals available for families of people with behavioral health needs.

“This critical funding enables our agency to expand support for older adults and individuals with disabilities who may be isolated or encounter barriers that limit access to behavioral health services,” said Nicole Long, CEO.

Long continued, “OCES provides essential services and is an important resource for older adults, people with disabilities, families, caregivers, and the larger community. We are dedicated to, and passionate about, helping others and improving lives.”

About the PVSA
In 2003, the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation founded the President’s Volunteer Service Award to recognize the important role of volunteers in America’s strength and national identity. This award honors individuals whose service positively impacts communities in every corner of the nation and inspires those around them to take action too. Led by AmeriCorps and managed in partnership with Points of Light, this program allows Certifying Organizations to recognize their most exceptional volunteers. As an AmeriCorps Seniors grantee, OCES receives funds through the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) for volunteers age 55+. RSVP-PC volunteers assist OCES and other local agencies that are OCES Community Service Partners.

Volunteering for OCES
With the help of more than 550 Nutrition Program volunteers, OCES serves 2,600 meals every weekday as part of its Meals on Wheels Program. Money Management Program (MMP) volunteers assist older adults and individuals with disabilities with bill paying, reconciling bank statements, balancing checkbooks, and in special cases, negotiating debt with creditors. Volunteers also serve on the OCES Board of Directors, MMP and RSVP-PC Community Advisory councils, and contribute with many other important efforts. OCES’ Volunteer Program supports Community Service Partners including South Shore Habitat for Humanity, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, local food banks, and Veterans Service agencies.

Earlier this year, OCES reopened their Volunteer Center at 204 South Meadow Road in Plymouth to serve as a central resource for volunteers and service partners offering volunteer opportunities in Plymouth County. Prospective volunteers can talk one-on-one with Volunteer Program staff who assist them in their search for volunteering opportunities that fit their skills and interests. The Volunteer Center is equipped with computers for researching volunteer opportunities as well as brochures and other literature from organizations seeking volunteers.

“Every year an estimated 1 in 10 older adults experience elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation according to the National Council on Aging,” said Teresa Kourtz, LSW, MSG, OCES’ Protective Services Director. “Elder abuse is known as a ‘silent problem’ which is why raising awareness of elder abuse and its signs are so important. We encourage the community to join us at these events to increase awareness and help to end elder abuse.”

Recognizing Elder Abuse
Elder abuse includes physical, emotional, neglect, self-neglect, financial exploitation, and sexual abuse. According to the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs, 40,127 elder abuse reports were received during Fiscal Year 2023. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Community Living stated that an estimated five million older adults are victims of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation every year. One in 10 adults aged 60 and older have experienced some form of elder abuse. Common risk factors for elder abuse are social isolation, poor physical health, and dementia. Nationally, at least $36.5 billion annually is lost by victims of financial abuse according to the National Council on Aging.

OCES’ Protective Services Program staff works with older adults, or their designees, to prevent, eliminate, or remedy situations involving elder abuse. When a report is made to the Centralized Intake Unit (Elder Abuse Hotline) and the elder resides in our catchment area, OCES will receive the report and determine if further investigation by a Protective Services Worker is necessary.

If you have concerns, please contact your local Protective Services Agency. If you want to file a report on elder abuse, please contact the Centralized Intake Unit (Elder Abuse Hotline) at 1-800-922-2275.

About March for Meals
The month of March is when The Meals on Wheels network joins forces to celebrate “March for Meals”. This recognizes the historic day in March 1972 when President Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act (OAA) of 1965 to include a national nutrition program for seniors 60 years and older. For more than 50 years OAA has been the foundational source of federal funding for senior nutrition programs across the country that collectively deliver more than 247 million meals to 2.8 million seniors annually.

OCES Milestones
Founded in 1974, OCES continues to grow and evolve. There have been many milestones over the years including creation of the Greater Brockton Area Hoarding Task Force; establishment of the first Supportive Housing Program in Brockton; and formalization of an Internship Program with Bridgewater State University – all of which continue today. In 2013, the first annual Elder Abuse Awareness event was held in Brockton. In the years that followed, Healthy Living Workshops, Buried in Treasures Workshops, Caregiver Support, and other programs have been established. OCES opened a second office at 204 South Meadow Road in Plymouth featuring a dedicated Volunteer Center for volunteer recruitment for OCES as well as for other nonprofits, schools, and agencies in Southeastern MA. In 2023, OCES expanded their Behavioral Health services with an Elder Mental Health Outreach Team (EMHOT).

According to CEO Nicole Long, “OCES is at the forefront – providing essential services, creating awareness of critical issues, and serving as an important resource for older adults, people with disabilities, families, caregivers, and the larger community. We are dedicated to, and passionate about, helping others and improving lives.”

BROCKTON AND PLYMOUTH, MA…More than 80 were in attendance for Old Colony Elder Services (OCES) Volunteer Center Grand Re-Opening event held Wednesday, March 20, 2024.

OCES’ Volunteer Center, located at 204 South Meadow Road in Plymouth, serves as a central resource for Plymouth County volunteers as well as for local agencies offering volunteer opportunities.

The Plymouth Area Chamber of Commerce supported OCES with a formal ribbon cutting ceremony, which was followed by an Open House with tours and refreshments. Attendees included: Senator Susan Moran and Representative Mathew Muratore along with Plymouth Area Chamber of Commerce’s Board Directors and Ambassadors, Representatives from AmeriCorps and many current volunteers.

“We’re thrilled to have such a wonderful turnout at our event and delighted to officially welcome the community back to our Volunteer Center in Plymouth,” said Nicole Long, CEO of OCES. “Thank you to all our dedicated volunteers, Senator Moran, Representative Muratore, The Plymouth Chamber, AmeriCorps Representative Rob Glazier and the business community for your support. Working together, we can continue to make a difference in the lives of so many.”

Expansive Volunteer Network
OCES has a significant volunteer base. With offices in Brockton and Plymouth, OCES is the largest provider of in-home and community-based services for older adults and people living with disabilities in Plymouth County and surrounding areas in Massachusetts.

Volunteers are integral to OCES’ Meals on Wheels Program, Money Management Program and Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Plymouth County, which is part of the Americorps Senior network of programs for individuals aged 55+.

“Our volunteer network supports many important programs that meet the needs of thousands of individuals in our community. We’d like to thank AmeriCorps and all our volunteers who generously give their time and effort to help others,” said Armindo Rocha, Volunteer Programs Manager at OCES. Rocha coordinated the Grand Re-opening event with Cidalia America, OCES’ Volunteer Coordinator along with the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce.

In addition, OCES recruits volunteers and connects them with community service partners. OCES finds volunteers to meet their specific needs of community service partners such as South Shore Habitat for Humanity, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, local food banks, Veterans service agencies and others.

At OCES’ Volunteer Center, prospective volunteers can talk one-on-one with Volunteer Program staff, who can assist them in their search for volunteering opportunities that fit their skills and interests. The Volunteer Center is equipped with computers for researching volunteer opportunities as well as brochures and other literature from organizations seeking volunteers. The Volunteer Center also serves as a designated space for volunteers to work together on specific projects, such as “Letter Writing to Troops” for National Days of Service and Remembrance.

There are many different outreach opportunities for volunteers of all ages, from high school and college students to retirees. Volunteers can choose an opportunity that best fits their schedule.  OCES has the ability to “match” volunteers with organizations one-on-one.

The Volunteer Center is open Tuesday through Thursday, from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M. Appointments are not required.
