A good deed that goes rewarded. Falmouth resident Jennifer Gregg receives “Tireless Neighbor” award from Haley’s Tire.

Haley's Tire's Tireless Neighbor

September 14, 2011 //  by admin

Haley's Tire's Tireless Neighbor
Falmouth resident Jennifer Gregg is this month’s winner of Haley’s Tire’s Tireless Neighbor award. Haley’s Tire Manager Matt Ahonen is on the right.

BIDDEFORD, BANGOR, AUGUSTA AND FALMOUTH, MAINE…

In recognition of her volunteering her time to numerous area non-profits, Haley’s Tire & Service Center recently awarded Falmouth resident Jennifer Gregg its “Tireless Neighbor” honors for the month of August.

You might say donating her time is a habit—or habitat—for Gregg. Since relocating to Falmouth after her retirement from the CIA in 2000, she’s been an active volunteer for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland, doing everything from pounding nails to raising funds for Habitat homes in Falmouth, Naples, Portland and Cumberland. Gregg has also been an active organizer of and participant in St. Mary’s Episcopal Church of Falmouth’s outreach projects that have included generating hands-on and financial support in recent years for organizations such as Safe Passage, Gary’s house, the Falmouth Food Pantry and St. Elizabeth’s Essential Needs Pantry.

More recently, she turned her focus to the management of  S. Mary’s “Souper Supper”,  a sit-down supper of soup, bread, salad and desserts  offered free of charge twice monthly to the greater Portland community.   For those efforts, Gregg received “Tireless Neighbor” honors.

“It’s a little dizzying listening to Jennifer’s list of charitable endeavors, not to mention her service to our country” said Tim Haley, owner of Haley’s Tire. “We are extremely lucky to have somebody like Jennifer who not only chose to live in this community but make it a better place with her work with Habitat and St. Mary’s in Falmouth. She’s an extremely worthy recipient of our Tireless Neighbor award.”

Each month, Haley’s Tire & Service Center recognizes somebody in the four communities they serve—Augusta, Bangor, Biddeford and Falmouth—for going above and beyond the call of duty for the communities in which they live. Candidates are nominated by fellow citizens, who submit a short description as to why a particular nominee should be that month’s Tireless Neighbor. The entry that makes the most compelling case, as determined by Haley’s Tire staff, receives the Tireless Neighbor honor, which includes a free oil change (a $29.95 value) at any Haley’s Tire location.

Gregg was nominated for the Tireless Neighbor award by her friend, Talie Harris, a fellow volunteer at St. Mary’s.

“I spent almost 30 years with the CIA working mostly overseas. When it was time to retire, I decided I was going to pick a place where I could experience an American community,” said Gregg. “By living in Falmouth and working with Habitat and St. Mary’s, I’ve been able to fulfill the dream of being part of a community and that’s a reward unto itself. Being recognized for that is just icing on the cake.”

Haley’s Tire honors a Tireless Neighbor once a month in the four communities it serves. People can nominate a Tireless Neighbor by sending an e-mail of 200 words or less to tirelessneighbor@haleystire.com . Please remember to include your name and telephone number as well as the name and telephone number or e-mail of the person they are nominating. Written nominations can be dropped off or mailed to any Haley’s Tire & Service Center. The locations and mailing address of the four Haley’s Tire & Service Center are below:

A good deed that goes rewarded. Cumberland resident Jean Lamson receives “Tireless Neighbor” award from Haley’s Tire.

August 11, 2011 //  by admin

Haley's Tire's "Tireless Neighbor" Jean Lamson with Haley's Tire Manager Matt Ahonen

BIDDEFORD, BANGOR, AUGUSTA AND FALMOUTH, MAINE…

Running a community food pantry, as Jean Lamson does for the Cumberland Congregational Church, is certainly not a thankless task. The ‘thank you’s’ are plentiful from the families in need that the pantry helps. Yet that’s the only compensation Lamson receives for working 20 hours or more a month at the pantry. That generosity and selflessness did, however, earn her the distinction of being selected for Haley’s Tire & Service Center’s “Tireless Neighbor” award.

“We’re delighted to honor Jean as the first recipient of our Tireless Neighbor award,” said Tim Haley, owner of Haley’s Tire. “This is a tough economy for many people and food pantries like the one Jean runs can literally be the difference between feeding your family or not. Jean’s selfless contribution of her time makes her an extremely worthy winner.”

A Cumberland resident, Lamson has worked at the food pantry since 2005. Congregational Church Senior Minister Diane Bennekamper nominated her for the Tireless Neighbor contest.

“I’m deeply moved by Diane’s gesture in nominating me for this award,” said Lamson, a retired United Airlines worker who settled in Cumberland with her husband Allan in 2000. “The pantry operates strictly by donations, so keeping it going is not always easy. But we are helping families in the area and I find that to be quite fulfilling.”

Avoid the summer bummer. Preventative tips to prepare your automobile for a driving family vacation.

July 28, 2011 //  by admin

BIDDEFORD, BANGOR, AUGUSTA AND FALMOUTH, MAINE…

Family car trips are as part of American lore as apple pie, fireworks on the 4th of July and presidential elections. Sure, DVD players, satellite radio and handheld video games have made family road trips more tolerable than years ago. Technology notwithstanding, a breakdown of any kind can still turn a family summer road trip into a summer bummer in a heartbeat. That’s why it’s critical to prepare your vehicle before the trip.

“When you see somebody broken down by the side of the road, nine times out of 10 it’s something that probably could have been avoided had they taken proper precautions,” said Tim Haley, owner of Haley’s Tire & Service Center. “If you’re planning a driving vacation with your family, the difference between smooth sailing and being that car along the side is really a matter of making an appointment with a certified mechanic before your trip. And if you’re handy with automobiles, most of these things you can do on your own.”

Haley recommends checking:

  • Fluids – Have all your fluids checked prior to your trip. That includes: engine oil; transmission fluid; antifreeze/coolant; radiator coolant; brake fluid; windshield washer fluid; power steering fluid. While many express oil change services will change your oil and do some type of check of fluids and belts, they may not top off things like power steering fluid. Be sure to ask. Also, whatever service you get on your car prior to departure, you want to make sure that filters—oil, air, and gas—have been changed if needed.
  • Hoses and belts – Make sure these are tightly secured and in good working order. If you’re not certain of how to do that, make an appointment with a local service technician.
  • Tires – The obvious is to make sure you have enough air pressure so you’re getting better gas mileage. Remember, the number on the tire’s side is the maximum pressure it can withstand, not the recommended amount. For summertime driving, your tires should be close but not at the maximum. Never inflate your tires too much as it could provoke a blowout. Before starting any trip, you want to make sure your tires have adequate tread. If your tires look worn and you’re not sure whether the tires need to be replaced or rotated, bring your vehicle to a tire dealer. Tires should be rotated every 6,000 miles. And whatever you do, do not embark on any kind of trip without a spare tire that is also appropriately filled and with sufficient treads.
  • Air Conditioning – Nothing turns a driving trip into a summer bummer more than air conditioning not working. If you notice any inconsistencies prior to the trip, be sure to have it checked out.
  • Brakes – Brakes are not ordinarily part of an oil change inspection. Many service centers offer a summer maintenance packages that include brake inspections and other precautionary checks, like air conditioning.
  • Emergency kit – You can mitigate or even prevent a number of potential road trip difficulties just by packing an adequate emergency kit. This should contain jumper cables, a knife, a flashlight, a multipurpose tool, tire sealant and duct tape.

“Vacation time with your family, even if much of it is in transit, is special time and you want to spend that time having fun, not stuck along an interstate or in a service center waiting room,” said Haley. “By taking these simple precautionary steps, you greatly improve your odds againstunning into a problem on the road, which means more time for fun.”

Haley’s Tire’s awards Biddeford resident Nicole Cartier its annual scholarship.

July 13, 2011 //  by admin

BIDDEFORD, BANGOR, AUGUSTA AND FALMOUTH, MAINE…

Earlier this month, Haley’s Tire selected Biddeford resident and current Babson College student Nicole Cartier as the recipient of its annual scholarship.

As part of the scholarship, Cartier will receive $1,000 from Haley’s Tire to go towards her studies. In addition, she will also receive $1,000 from the New England Tire and Service Association (NETSA), of which Haley’s Tire is a member, as part of the Association’s matching program.

“We set up our scholarship specifically to help Maine residents further their education,” said Tim Haley, owner of Haley’s Tire and Service Center. “It’s doubly satisfying that this year’s scholarship goes to a deserving student like Nicole who is from one of the towns where we have a store and that NETSA chose to match the award. Nicole has a very bright future ahead of her and we hope this helps her get there.”

Cartier is a 2010 graduate of Biddeford High School. She’s enrolled in Babson College’s accounting program and is slated to graduate in 2014. While in school, Cartier works for Babson’s Undergraduate Center for Career Development. She is also employed by the Southern Maine Medical Center.

In addition to its scholarship, Haley’s Tire takes part in a number of charitable endeavors in the four communities it serves: Biddeford, Falmouth, Augusta and Bangor. That includes:

  • LearningWorks
  • Maine Audubon Society
  • Maine Public Broadcasting Network
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Cancer Community Center
  • Boys & Girls Club
  • Friends of Casco Bay-Casco Baykeepers
  • Young Life Casco Bay
  • National MS Society- New England Chapter
  • YMCA  of Casco Bay
  • Falmouth Lion’s Club
  • Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital

In addition, Tim Haley is also a member of the local Salvation Army’s Board of Directors and a leading fundraiser/participant for the Pan Mass Challenge bike ride.

“We sell nationally known brands like Goodyear, Dunlop and Kelly Tires, but when you get right down to it, we are a Maine company owned and operated by a Maine family,” said Haley. “Helping out our own is a Maine tradition and we get quite a bit of satisfaction in the causes we help in the communities we serve.”

Frederick Haley, Jr. and Frederick Haley founded Haley’s Tire in 1970 with its Biddeford store located at 124 Elm Street. An authorized Goodyear, Dunlop and Kelly Tires dealer, Haley Tire’s also offers repair services, including oil changes, alignments, brakes service (including free brake inspections), transmission maintenance, computerized engine analysis and much more at all four locations.

Haley’s Tire’s “Maine Men”… Guy Norcross joins Haley’s Tire 20 years of service club.

May 26, 2011 //  by admin

Guy Norcross (far left) recently celebrated 20 years with Haley’s Tire & Service Center in Augusta. Pictured with Norcross are fellow 20+ year employees and Augusta residents Store Manager Dale Cushman and Auto Technician William Baker.

BIDDEFORD, BANGOR, AUGUSTA AND FALMOUTH, MAINE…

Earlier this month, Augusta resident Guy Norcross celebrated his 20th anniversary as an employee of Haley’s Tire, located at 300 State Street in Augusta. With his anniversary, Norcross, an auto technician, joined an elite club of Haley’s Tire employees who have served more than 20 years with the company, which opened its first store in Biddeford, Maine, in 1970.

The other members of this elite group include Auto Technician William Baker and Store Manager Dale Cushman, also of the Augusta Haley’s Tire store and service center. In addition to working at the same store and being Augusta residents, Baker and Cushman both started at Haley Tire’s on the same day, May 27, 1987. Bangor Store Manager Harry McDonald, a Hermon resident who celebrated his 20th anniversary last year, rounds out this elite group of employees with two decades or more of service.

“When my father and grandfather began the business, they wanted it to be a place where customers and staff would feel like part of our extended family,” said Tim Haley, general manager of all four Haley’s Tire locations. “That we’ve had four individuals like Guy, Bill, Dale and Harry stay with us for so long, not to mention another seven of our employees who have been with us 10 years or more, means we’ve succeeded in that regard.”

Frederick Haley, Jr. and Frederick Haley founded Haley’s Tire in 1970 with its Biddeford store located at 124 Elm Street. An authorized Goodyear, Dunlop and Kelly Tires dealer, Haley Tire’s also offers repair services, including oil changes, alignments, brakes service (including free brake inspections), transmission maintenance, computerized engine analysis and much more at all four locations (August, Biddeford, Bangor and Falmouth).

Beyond great products and service at a fair price, Haley’s Tire has engendered loyalty from customers and staff, in part, due to the active role store leadership plays in the community. Tim Haley is on the board of directors for the local chapter of The Salvation Army. Haley’s Tire is also a regular participant in the American Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life”.

“We sell national tire products like Goodyear, Kelly Tires and others, but when you get right down to it, we’re selling our company and what we stand for,” said Haley. “Providing a great product and service, being a company people want to work for and stay with and giving back to the community are things we take great pride in. It may seem like we’re doing something special here, but it’s really just following the vision my dad and grandfather had for the company when we started.”
