South Coast Improvement Company promotes Sean J. Whalen to senior vice president

June 12, 2017 //  by admin

Sean Whalen

MARION, MA…

South Coast Improvement Company (SCI), a design-build general contractor serving New England and the Mid-Atlantic states, recently promoted Sean J. Whalen to senior vice president.

In his new role at South Coast Improvement, Whalen will take on additional responsibilities in building relationships and strategic alliances, channel development, expanding the company’s sales markets and overseeing the sales team.

“The client experience defines our business and has been the leading factor to the growth and repeat business we’ve enjoyed over the last several years. Sean has been an integral part of that,” said Tom Quinlan, president of South Coast Improvement, Inc. “In fact, we could list the many things Sean does for our firm but when you get right down to it, his primary responsibility is ensuring the client experience on a senior level. He’s very good at it and worthy of this promotion.”

Whalen began with South Coast Improvement in 2012. Prior to that, he worked for more than two decades in business development for large public and private corporations as well as start-ups.

A graduate of Boston College, Whalen and his wife Sandra reside in Marblehead, Massachusetts with their five sons Robert, Jack, Sam, Gordie and Jesse. When Jesse was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, Whalen became actively involved with JDRF (formerly the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). He and Sandra have strived to raise awareness and funds for a cure through the Promise to Remember Me campaign and the annual Walk to Cure Diabetes Boston.

“After the crash of 2008, there were a lot of GC firms in tough shape. South Coast, through it’s commitment to doing great work and the client experience, was one of the few companies that held its ground during that tough period. I’m just delighted that I’ve been part of this incredible growth the company has enjoyed these last few years,” said Whalen.

Based in Marion, Mass. and with an office in Reading, Pennsylvania, South Coast Improvement Co is a recognized leader in providing building and renovation services to a client base of senior living, healthcare, institutional and retail clients. Cheers. Moby Dick Brewing Co spouts new life into New Bedford, MA downtown with help from South Coast Improvement.

May 15, 2017 //  by admin

South Coast Improvement Company (SCI), a design-build general contractor serving New England and the Mid-Atlantic states, recently completed construction on the Moby Dick Brewing Company in New Bedford, MA.

NEW BEDFORD and MARION, MA…

The first thing you might notice is the large windows and inviting outdoor seating.  You might also start humming a sea chanty as you take in artifacts of New Bedford’s historic whaling and fishing history and authentic artwork and photography. It’s all part of the allure of the new Moby Dick Brewing, Co.

The 4,300-square-foot Moby Dick Brewing Co., built by South Coast Improvement of Marion, MA, recently opened diagonally across the intersection from the New Bedford Whaling Museum at the intersection of Union and Water streets in the city’s historic district.

The cozy bistro includes a small retail area for memorabilia, pub-style menu items and a 10-barrel brewery operation behind the bar area.  One hundred seats welcome patrons to enjoy hand-crafted brews and simple dishes with a local flair – including salt cod chowder, sweet potato and apple soup and pan-seared scallops. The beers boast grain-to-glass goodness and include different references to Herman Melville’s epic novel such as Ishm-ale Ale, Stove Boat Dry Irish Stout and Simple Sailor American Lager.

“We are delighted to bring this landmark pub and all its historic texture to the region,” noted Tom Quinlan, CEO of South Coast. “We enjoyed working closely with the investors to deliver a showcase and tribute the area’s salty charms.”

The investment team for the $1.3 million project included David Slutz; Maureen Sylvia Armstrong, CEO of the Sylvia Group in Dartmouth; Peter Kavanaugh, owner of Brownell Boat Stands in Mattapoisett and president of La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries in Dartmouth; Richard Lafrance, CEO of Lafrance Hospitality, which operates the New Bedford Fairfield Inn & Suites and White’s of Westport, among other hotel and restaurant holdings; and Bob Unger, principal of Unger LeBlanc Inc. Strategic Communications.

Kevin Caldwell, of Caldwell Architectural Associates in New Bedford, was the project’s architect.

New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell noted, “The brewery is another significant addition to the downtown.  That is a very prominent corner and this new business will really stand out.”

South Coast Improvement, Co. begins work on L-A-Z-Boy Furniture in North Dartmouth

May 9, 2016 //  by admin

L-A-Z Boy
L-A-Z Boy Furniture in North Dartmouth

South Coast Improvement Company, a design-build general contractor serving New England and the Mid-Atlantic states, recently began a renovation project for L-A-Z-Boy Furniture at 110 Faunce Corner Road in North Darmouth. The two-stage project involves conversion of the store from its current colonial look to the more modern, contemporary décor at newer L-A-Z-Boy locations.

Stage one of the renovation began in March on the left side of the store. A temporary wall was constructed to separate work zone from the other side of the building, where L-A-Z-Boy has remained opened.

The scope of the renovations features new walls, floors, carpeting, lighting, ceiling work and new paint. The previous colors were white to fit the colonial theme. The new more contemporary look features orange, greens and browns.

The first stage of the renovation concluded last month. The second stage will be finished later in May. The entire cost of the renovation is approximately $275,000.

“As a general contractor, we always want a great final result. But what has earned our firm repeat business has been minimizing interruption to everyday operations,” said Tom Quinlan, president of South Coast Improvement Company. “For this first project, we’re looking to show the good people at L-A-Z-Boy why 85 percent of our project are from repeat customers.”

BOSTON, MA, and MARION, MA…

South Coast Improvement Company (SCI), a design-build general contractor serving New England and the Mid-Atlantic states, recently began a renovation project at Bay Cove, a housing complex located at 374 Dorchester Street in South Boston. The complex is owned and operated by Bay Cove Human Services, A leading human service agency in Boston serving individuals facing the challenges of developmental disabilities, mental illness, drug and alcohol addiction and aging.

The project, which began earlier this month, features the complete renovation of the kitchen and bathrooms in the eight units at 374 Dorchester Street. The bedrooms in each of those units will receive new dry wall, new ceiling plaster, new light fixtures and other amenities.

The common areas of the building, which includes a reception area, kitchen and bath, will also be completely renovated. In addition, the brick exterior of the building will be washed and a new roof and gutters will be installed.

South Coast Improvement Company began these renovations in March and anticipates all work to be completely finished by late spring/early summer. The total renovation project will cost approximately $1.3 million.

“This is a delicate kind of renovation as the majority of work is being done in people’s homes. So, we have to be sensitive to the interruption to people’s routines and communicate very clearly and often the status of work and any changes,” said Tom Quinlan, president of South Coast Improvement Company. “Fortunately, through our work at assisted living and other residences, we can take on a renovation project like this and minimize the impact on residents.”

MARION, MA…

South Coast Improvement Company (SCI), a design-build general contractor serving New England and the Mid-Atlantic states, recently hired Sean Cahill as a construction site supervisor. Cahill comes to the Marion, Mass.-based contractor after serving as a sales manager at Cape Cod Lumber.

In his role as supervisor, will manage construction crews on SCI new construction and renovations projects. Since being hired in July, Cahill has worked on SCI projects for New Hope Village in Walpole, MA and Brookdale River Bay Club in Quincy.

“With his background in building materials, sales and management, Sean brings an invaluable set of skills to the table and he’s a fine example of the talent we have on staff at South Coast Improvement,” said Tom Quinlan, president of South Coast Improvement, Inc.

Cahill began in the building materials sales in 1993. In addition to Cape Cod Lumber, he worked at Harvey Industries and Norandex.

“Making a bit of career change like this is a little unnerving but it’s gone very well so far. Everyone at SCI is very easy to work with,” said Cahill. “Our business may be construction, but we really are in the service industry and that’s where my background in sales management really comes in handy. At the end of the day, it’s really about managing personalities and working with people.”

Cahill earned an associate’s degree from Massasoit Community College. He resides in Hanson, Massachusetts with his wife Carol and their two young children.
