B-a-a-a-a. Goats get grounds ready for new green, pocket neighborhood in Norfolk, MA.

The goats are coming.   Eight to ten goats will be the first to make way for Boyde’s Crossing, a new environmentally-sensitive and pocket neighborhood community in Norfolk, MA.  The goats, from Galasso Landscaping based in Walpole, MA, will arrive with an appetite the last week of August and are expected to munch away for 10 days.Goat smaller photo

The goats will clear invasive species and invasive weeds like poison ivy and thistle that are impacting wetland on the property. Goats have a long tradition of clearing land. Companies such as Google and Yahoo used goats to clear invasive weeds from their office campuses. The Vanderbilt mansion, which is a national historic site, also used goats.

The use of goats is in keeping with the philosophy and development practices of Boyde’s Crossing.  Solar panels, recycled materials, rapidly renewable products, energy efficient technology and prudent land use are focal points of Boyde’s Crossing.

Boyde’s Crossing is also a Pocket Neighborhood that encourages more intimate connections and getting to know your neighbors. The 40 single-family, cottage-style homes will feature front porches that overlook a common green and shared bike racks. The Pocket Neighborhood movement first emerged in Seattle, Washington 15 years ago.

Boyde’s Crossing will be built on the nine-acre parcel of land at 106-108 Main Street. The community is within walking distance of the train station and the downtown area.

Between Rounds of Vernon to Hold Storytelling in the Round on September 18th

Storytelling in the Round, a monthly program featuring readings by Connecticut’s own published (and aspiring) authors, resumes at Between Rounds Bakery Sandwich Café in Vernon in September.

A reading with Brien Brown, author of The Fourth Son, a work of historical fiction, is scheduled on September 18, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. at Between Rounds located in Vernon Circle Shopping Center, 243 Hartford Turnpike. This is a FREE one-hour event.

Brien Brown holds a Bachelor of Science degree in History and a Master of Science degree in Geography from Central Connecticut State University and a Sixth Year in Educational Leadership from The University of Connecticut. After a long career teaching history and geography at the secondary and collegiate levels, he is writing his first novel. Set in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, The Fourth Son is a work of historical fiction following the young son of a French noble family from France into colonial America. Mr. Brown uses his extensive knowledge of history and geography to fill this work with rich and authentic details about early colonial America.

A question and answer session will follow the reading.

“Connecticut is home to so many wonderful authors. Storytelling in the Round gives both the author and the reader an opportunity to connect – right in their own backyard at our café,” noted Jerry Puiia, co-founder of Between Rounds.

One Sunday a month from September to May, Storytelling in the Round puts the spotlight on a different local author. All Storytelling in the Round author appearances are arranged by Ron Farina, an author, nationally recognized speaker and veteran.

Old Colony Elder Services Appoints Eileen Murphy to Lead Options Counseling Program Outreach

Old Colony Elder ServicesOCES Murphy Eileen (OCES), the non-profit agency proudly serving older adults and individuals with disabilities throughout greater Plymouth County and surrounding communities, has appointed Eileen Murphy to lead the marketing of their Options Counseling Program.

Ms. Murphy was promoted from Case Manager to Intake & Referral (I&R) Manager several months ago. Among Ms. Murphy’s many responsibilities, she will spearhead marketing of OCES’ Options Counseling Program, which provides assistance with planning for long-term care needs. The Options Counseling Program is a free service offered by OCES; Ms. Murphy and her staff work directly with hospitals, nursing facilities, and Councils on Aging in an effort to provide guidance to those looking to live independently in the community.

With 17 years of Aging Services Access Points (ASAPs) experience, Ms. Murphy oversees OCES’ I&R department staff including Options Counselors, Benefit Advisors, the Department Supervisor and I&R Specialists. She reports to Susan Willis, OCES’ ASAP Programs Director.

Ms. Murphy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Southeastern Massachusetts University (which is now University of Massachusetts Dartmouth). She is currently working towards becoming a Licensed Social Worker and is a lifelong resident of Fairhaven, MA.

The Options Counseling (OC) Program serves seniors age 60 and over, persons of any age with a disability, family members and caregivers. OCES’ Options Counselors can visit consumers at home, or in a hospital, nursing home or rehabilitation facility to present important information needed to make informed decisions, develop a long-term care plan, and connect to resources, services and supports that help them remain in the community. OC is a core function of the Aging and Disability Resource Consortium of Southeastern and Southern Massachusetts, of which OCES is a member.

Brockton and Plymouth Organizations “March to End Elder Abuse”

OCES logoIn an effort to raise awareness of elder abuse, more than 160 older adults, civic leaders, health workers and supporters participated in “March to End Elder Abuse” walks held in Brockton and Plymouth.

Old Colony Elder Services (OCES), the non-profit agency proudly serving older adults and individuals with disabilities throughout greater Plymouth County and surrounding communities, joined with organizations in Brockton and Plymouth to observe World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) in June.

For the fourth consecutive year, OCES joined with Brockton Council on Aging (COA) and HarborOne in a March to End Elder Abuse. On June 15th, more than 100 participated in the walk, many wearing purple “End Elder Abuse” t-shirts and carrying handmade signs.

After the march, which started at the Brockton COA and followed Main Street to the OCES office, participants enjoyed a lunch at the COA headquarters. To view a video of the event as covered by Brockton Community Access, visit:

On June 23rd, OCES joined forces with the Plymouth Center for Active Living (formerly known as Council on Aging/COA), the Plymouth Networking Group for Senior Services (PNG), and Plymouth C.A.R.E.S inthe first annual March to End Elder Abuse in Plymouth. More than 60 people marched along the waterfront, followed by lunch, guest speakers and an awards ceremony at the Plymouth Center for Active Living. Several individuals who have assisted seniors in protective services and in the town of Plymouth received recognition awards including Lisa Budge-Johnson, Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department Outreach Coordinator, Attorney Mary Kate Connelly, Ken Beuchs, Steve Lydon, and Plymouth Police Captain Bruce McNamee.

OCES would like to thank the Boys & Girls Club, who helped make the signs; staff from the Plymouth Center for Active Living; Plymouth Networking Group; transportation by Stafford Assisted Living, Brookdale Assisted Living and GATRA; guest speakers; State Representative Matt Muratore; Connie DiLego, Center for Active Living Director. A certificate of Congressional recognition to OCES was received from U.S. Representative Stephen F. Lynch’s office.

Raising Awareness

Elder abuse includes financial exploitation, emotional, physical, and sexual abuse or neglect. According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, family members (spouses, adult children, partners and others) comprise the majority of abusers. Additionally, research indicates that individuals with dementia are at even greater risk for elder abuse.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Community Living, an estimated five million, or one in 10 older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation every year. Experts believe that for every case of elder abuse or neglect reported, as many as 23 cases go unreported.

OCES helps elders who have been victims of neglect or harm from a caregiver. When there is a report made to OCES, a Protective Services Worker investigates the report, provides support, and if needed, information about resources such as medical, legal, psychological, financial and housing assistance.

Teresa Kourtz, OCES’ Protective Services Director, stressed that witnesses to elder abuse, or those who see symptoms of elder abuse, should report it to a protective services program or by calling the state’s Elder Abuse Hotline at 1-800-922-2275.

Local Artist and Veteran to Design Old Colony Elder Services’ Lobster for the Plymouth Lobster Crawl

Old Colony Elder Services (OCES), the non-profit agency serving older adults and individuals with disabilities throughout greater Plymouth County and surrounding communities, is a proud sponsor of one of the 29 lobsters that will be showcased in Plymouth’s Lobster Crawl, the major public arts event that will be on display throughout the waterfront, downtown and Plymouth community.

OCES’ lobster will greet visitors at Nelson Park on the Plymouth waterfront and will be custom designed and hand painted by local artist and Plymouth resident, Samantha Shields.

With a passion for art, Ms. Shields is a student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst where she studies architecture and painting. She is also a Veteran of the United States Air Force, having served for four years as an Arabic Linguist.

The Lobster Crawl was an enticing opportunity for Ms. Shields to get her work out in public for the first time. She has already completed the design on OCES’ five-foot tall fiberglass structure and will be painting it using acrylic paints. According to Ms. Shields, she hopes to one day have paintings in galleries and no matter where her architecture and design career takes her, will always make her artwork a priority.

“Samantha’s illustrations on our delightful and whimsical OCES lobster beautifully reflect our vision and mission,” said Diana DiGiorgi, Executive Director. “We are excited to be working with such a talented artist.”

Friends of Plymouth Dog Park is a local non-profit looking to raise funds to construct a Dog Park in West Plymouth.

PLYMOUTH, MA…

Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac, located at 137 Samoset Street in Plymouth, will host a dog “Groom-a-thon” to benefit the Friends of Plymouth Dog Park on Saturday, September 17, from 9 am to 5 pm. Friends of Plymouth Dog Park is a local non-profit looking to raise funds to construct a Dog Park in West Plymouth.

Zoomin Groomin, a local pet groomer, will park it’s mobile grooming unit at the lot at Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac. Complimentary grooming sessions for dogs will be available on a first-come, first served basis. While there is no charge to have your dog groomed, the recommended donation is $50-$100. One hundred percent of that money will be donated to the Friends of Plymouth Dog Park.

“There is federal grant money available for dog parks up to $250,000. The requirement is that towns come up with 10 percent of the construction costs. That means we need to raise $25,000,” said Gina Delaney, president of Friends of Plymouth Dog Park. “We can’t thank Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac and Zoomin’ Groomin’ for helping out our very worthy cause with this fundraiser.”

Friends of Plymouth Dog Park will have an information booth inside the dealership where visitors can learn more about plans for the dog park and make donations. Friends of Plymouth Dog Park also have a Go Fund Me page that can be accessed on their website, www.plymouthdogs.com. To date, the group has raised $2,000.

“We are dog lovers, both at my house and at the dealership. One of our beloved staff members brings her two dogs to work every day and it’s unbelievable how many of our customer ask about the dogs. Sometimes I think they come to get their oil changed just to see the dogs,” said Jeff Tracy, president of Tracy Motors. “We support the effort to bring a dog park to Plymouth and we’re happy to host this event.”

Friends of Plymouth Dog Park is an all-volunteer organization based at 45 Minuteman Lane in Plymouth. It is currently in the application process for 501(c)(3) status and has been given permission by the State of Massachusetts to solicit funds.
