B-a-a-a-a. Goats get grounds ready for new green, pocket neighborhood in Norfolk, MA.

August 22, 2016 //  by admin

The goats are coming.   Eight to ten goats will be the first to make way for Boyde’s Crossing, a new environmentally-sensitive and pocket neighborhood community in Norfolk, MA.  The goats, from Galasso Landscaping based in Walpole, MA, will arrive with an appetite the last week of August and are expected to munch away for 10 days.

The goats will clear invasive species and invasive weeds like poison ivy and thistle that are impacting wetland on the property. Goats have a long tradition of clearing land. Companies such as Google and Yahoo used goats to clear invasive weeds from their office campuses. The Vanderbilt mansion, which is a national historic site, also used goats.

The use of goats is in keeping with the philosophy and development practices of Boyde’s Crossing.

Boyde’s Crossing is also a Pocket Neighborhood that encourages more intimate connections and getting to know your neighbors. The 40 single-family, cottage-style homes will feature front porches that overlook a common green and shared bike racks. The Pocket Neighborhood movement first emerged in Seattle, Washington 15 years ago.

Boyde’s Crossing will be built on the nine-acre parcel of land at 106-108 Main Street. The community is within walking distance of the train station and the downtown area.Goat smaller photo

Nicole Long, Assistant Executive Director at OCES and local artist Samantha Shields were on hand to watch the lobsters as they were “released” from their trailer on the Plymouth Waterfront on July 15th

Old Colony Elder Services (OCES), the non-profit agency serving older adults and individuals with disabilities throughout greater Plymouth County and surrounding communities, is a proud sponsor of one of the 29 lobsters that will be showcased in Plymouth’s Lobster Crawl, the major public arts event that will be on display throughout the waterfront, downtown and Plymouth community.

OCES’ lobster will greet visitors at Nelson Park on the Plymouth waterfront and will be custom designed and hand painted by local artist and Plymouth resident, Samantha Shields.

With a passion for art, Ms. Shields is a student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst where she studies architecture and painting. She is also a Veteran of the United States Air Force, having served for four years as an Arabic Linguist.

The Lobster Crawl was an enticing opportunity for Ms. Shields to get her work out in public for the first time. She has already completed the design on OCES’ five-foot tall fiberglass structure and will be painting it using acrylic paints. According to Ms. Shields, she hopes to one day have paintings in galleries and no matter where her architecture and design career takes her, will always make her artwork a priority.

“Samantha’s illustrations on our delightful and whimsical OCES lobster beautifully reflect our vision and mission,” said Diana DiGiorgi, Executive Director. “We are excited to be working with such a talented artist.”

Stay Tuned

OCES is currently holding a lobster-naming contest with their staff and will soon reveal the winning entry. More information about the celebration and unveiling of OCES’ lobster will be announced on their website at www.ocesma.org.

PLYMOUTH, MA…

Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac, located at 137 Samoset Street in Plymouth, will host a dog “Groom-a-thon” to benefit the Friends of Plymouth Dog Park on Saturday, September 17, from 9 am to 5 pm. Friends of Plymouth Dog Park is a local non-profit looking to raise funds to construct a Dog Park in West Plymouth.

Zoomin Groomin, a local pet groomer, will park it’s mobile grooming unit at the lot at Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac. Complimentary grooming sessions for dogs will be available on a first-come, first served basis. While there is no charge to have your dog groomed, the recommended donation is $50-$100. One hundred percent of that money will be donated to the Friends of Plymouth Dog Park.

“There is federal grant money available for dog parks up to $250,000. The requirement is that towns come up with 10 percent of the construction costs. That means we need to raise $25,000,” said Gina Delaney, president of Friends of Plymouth Dog Park. “We can’t thank Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac and Zoomin’ Groomin’ for helping out our very worthy cause with this fundraiser.”

Friends of Plymouth Dog Park will have an information booth inside the dealership where visitors can learn more about plans for the dog park and make donations. Friends of Plymouth Dog Park also have a Go Fund Me page that can be accessed on their website, www.plymouthdogs.com. To date, the group has raised $2,000.

“We are dog lovers, both at my house and at the dealership. One of our beloved staff members brings her two dogs to work every day and it’s unbelievable how many of our customer ask about the dogs. Sometimes I think they come to get their oil changed just to see the dogs,” said Jeff Tracy, president of Tracy Motors. “We support the effort to bring a dog park to Plymouth and we’re happy to host this event.”

Friends of Plymouth Dog Park is an all-volunteer organization based at 45 Minuteman Lane in Plymouth. It is currently in the application process for 501(c)(3) status and has been given permission by the State of Massachusetts to solicit funds.

If you would like more information about Friends of Plymouth Dog Park, please contact Gina Delaney at info@plymouthdogs.com.

More than 850 Participate in “Brockton Knocks Down Diabetes” Week

August 9, 2016 //  by admin

Diabetes Week 3 the team rotatedOld Colony Elder Services (OCES), the non-profit agency proudly serving older adults and individuals with disabilities throughout greater Plymouth County and surrounding communities, joined over forty other community agencies and businesses to support the 5th annual “Brockton Knocks Down Diabetes” (BKDD) week, June 11 to 18, 2016.

The weeklong program, which had 858 participants, was geared towards raising awareness of the prevalence of diabetes in the community. Travelling with an “event passport”, participants were able to attend any or all of 24 different events during the week, which included workshops focused on fitness, cooking demonstrations, screenings, and informational breakout sessions.

OCES kicked off BKDD week by sharing information about their Nutrition and Healthy Living programs with visitors at their information table at the Health and Wellness Expo held June 11th at the Shaw’s Center in Brockton. OCES’ BKDD team included Chris McLaren, Donna-Marie Forand, Chrisline Denis and Barbara Nalen-Cardosa, of OCES’ Healthy Living and Nutrition programs.

OCES, in partnership with Brockton Council on Aging, presented a free “Meal Planning for Diabetes” workshop on June 17th led by Donna-Marie Forand, Outreach and Education Specialist at OCES, and Dottie Slack, Health Education/Outreach Coordinator at Brockton COA.

On June 18th the closing event was the Family Fun Walk and Field Day at Campanelli Stadium. Walkers received free admission to the Brockton Rox baseball game at noon that day and also had the chance to participate in family games and enjoy multiple activities.

“Data shows that the greater Brockton area has higher incidence of diabetes than the rest of Massachusetts,” said Diana DiGiorgi, OCES’ Executive Director. “But armed with good information about nutrition, how to make healthy lifestyle choices, learning your level of risk and taking steps to prevent this disease, our consumers can live longer and healthier.”

A post-event survey revealed that the number one reason for participation in BKDD week was prevention and early detection, second was managing the disease, and third was to support a family member with diabetes. Eighty-seven percent of those surveyed feel more confident that they can prevent and/or control diabetes.

Emerson Bearing Boston offers Food Processors “Super” Bearings for Severe Service Environments

August 9, 2016 //  by admin

emerson bearingPremature bearing failure in equipment is a significant issue for seafood, meat and other food processors. Emerson Bearing Boston, a bearing company catering to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) markets around the world, has announced the availability of Stand-Off Series Mounted Bearing Units, “super” bearings that can handle severe service environments, particularly those applications that are a challenge to the survival of the bearing.

Severe service environments in the food processing industry are those that have conditions which contribute to the premature failure of the bearing, such as chemical, submerged or wash-down environments, vibrating or impact environments and those with high or low temperatures. For example, an environment processing food that goes into fryers. The bearing goes into the hot oil with the chicken nuggets or fish cakes.

Survival of the Fittest…Bearing

Emerson Bearing now offers corrosion resistant Stand-Off Series Mounted Bearing Units. With food processing requiring frequent wash downs of machinery often leading to premature bearing failure, these field-retrofittable integrated bearing stand-offs perform the task to a higher level, and allow users and inspectors full access to the space between the bearing and the frame. In this whole new approach, it eliminates any area between the bearing and housing where dirt and bacteria may accumulate, thereby enabling OEMs and users to better meet stringent sanitation standards for cleaning and inspection. Plastic caps for these bearings are also available through Emerson.

Food processing that involves fryers, another severe environment, requires bearings that can endure extremely high heat and withstand submersion in hot oil. Emerson Bearing also carries a special Fryer Bearing, which is a flange bearing unit that has a C4 fit which allows for thermal expansion.

“If wash down or chemicals cause premature bearing failure, or if food safety and contamination is an issue even though USDA and other programs are in place, these new sanitary bearings are ideal,” explained Steve Katz, president of Emerson Bearing. “Other factors, such as changing a bearing more than once a year or greasing a bearing at least once a week, are also indicative of the need for these ‘super’ bearings for severe service environments.”

For more information, contact Lee Holt, Marketing Specialist at Emerson Bearing at 800-225-4587.

About Emerson Bearing Boston

Founded in 1957, Emerson Bearing Boston specializes in bearings for OEM and MRO markets throughout the world. The company provides solutions to a variety of industries including: aggregate, concrete, mining, machine tools, electric motor repair, marine, material handling, metal processing, packaging, food processing, paper converting, printing, wind/power generation, recreation, heavy construction, robotics, automation, transportation, wood products, wastewater treatment, pump, compressor and oil field.

TGA Premier Youth Tennis announces Fall Programming

August 8, 2016 //  by admin

TGA web photo 2

TGA Premier Youth Tennis (TGA acronym stands for Teach, Grow, Achieve), the leading school and community based youth tennis introduction model, and a national partner with the United States Tennis Association (USTA), has come to the South Shore and is helping children develop the enthusiasm and skills to enjoy tennis for life.

As a way to introduce kids from all backgrounds to the fun, positive, character-building aspects of tennis – TGA of Plymouth County offers a fun and engaging six-week after school enrichment program for students in Kindergarten to Grade 8.

Peter Dunlap, a 21 year Hingham resident, and former Plymouth State University varsity tennis player owns and operates TGA of Plymouth County. Dunlap is a USPTA, PTR and TGA Certified Coach.

“Tennis has led me to lifelong friendships, a healthy lifestyle and a positive perspective on life,” noted Dunlap. He added, “The game doesn’t have to be complicated or foreboding, we try to introduce K-8 kids to a game that is fun and gives them a pathway to whatever level they’d like to bring it to. Studies have shown that many children lead sedentary lives. Oftentimes, they have yet to find a passion that moves them.”

TGA_Premier_Youth_Tennis_Logo copyTGA of Plymouth County recently announced a new Fall After School Enrichment Program and is registering elementary and middle schools now. All TGA of Plymouth County coaches are certified by TGA, trained by Dunlap and undergo CORI background check.

TGA of Plymouth County has led programs at the Hull Recreation Department and South Shore Sports Center of Hingham.

TGA provides all racquets, balls, training aids and portable nets for all ages, creating a safe and constructive tennis environment. The school only needs to supply the space. For example, half of a basketball court accommodates up to 15 students.

Dunlap and his team have an enthusiasm for tennis and enjoy working with children. The TGA curriculum makes tennis fun and relevant, often connecting it to classroom topics such as math, science and history and current events such as the U.S. Open. Individual and corporate scholarships (to cover all the children in a school’s program) are available.

TGA is one of the leading initiatives to grow the sport of tennis and is the only after-school youth tennis program in the country, which is making a significant impact on youth tennis and the future growth of the sport.

TGA, USTA and education experts developed a five level enrichment and instruction based curriculum for ages 5-10, and a play-based curriculum for students age 11-14. The program meets once a week and costs $99 per student. No special equipment or uniforms are needed. The only requirement is that children wear sneakers.

Whether this is the child’s first exposure to tennis or they are looking to take it to the next level, TGA programs helps children enjoy and grow with tennis. In partnership with the United States Tennis Association (USTA), TGA has developed a Youth Tennis Player Pathway to help guide families through the journey of learning and playing.

According to the Tennis Industry Association’s (TIA) State of the Industry report, there has been “a 4 percent increase in overall tennis participation, to 28 million players, and the highest participation level since 2009.”

Dunlap noted, “Tennis is an activity that provides physical exercise and mind/body coordination, while also teaching teamwork, goal setting, sportsmanship, and how to follow rules,” explained Dunlap. “TGA programs often incorporate academic lessons with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).”

School superintendents, principals, athletic directors, recreation directors and other school personnel interested in signing up for TGA’s Fall Program should contact Coach Peter Dunlap at 781-281-8565 or visit www.PlayTGA.com/PlymouthCounty.

Rodman CPAs Unveil New Website

August 8, 2016 //  by admin

Rodman-Logo-DigitalRodman CPAs, a full service tax and accounting firm serving small, mid–market, and multi-generational sized companies throughout the greater Boston area, has recently rebranded and launched a new generation of their website, www.rodmancpa.com.

Rodman CPAs, formerly known as Rodman & Rodman P.C., rebranded to better reflect the firm’s growth, expertise, and comprehensive accounting and tax solutions for clients in a range of industries, including alternative energy. The firm engaged Hailer Marketing Associates to lead the rebranding process and Paris Design to assist with the rebrand design.

The responsive site was developed using the latest web technique, a parallax design, and contains 90 percent new content and photography. The well-thought out modern design is user-friendly, enabling visitors to access content quickly.
