Cohasset Philanthropist offers to match donations up to $1 Million to Plymouth, MA-based Hart Speech Foundation.

Eileen and John Grayken of London, England have pledged to match donations up to $1 Million to the Plymouth, MA-based Hart Speech Foundation. John Patrick Grayken is a Cohasset native and an internationally known financier and founder and chairman of the private equity firm, Lone Star Funds

“We are humbled and delighted that Mr. and Mrs. Grayken have pledged to match funds and support our efforts,” noted Donald P. Hart, the Founder of the 501(c)(3) charitable organization.  He added, “This will fuel dramatic growth and will expand our ability to improve the lives of individuals who stutter through advocacy, scholarships and early intervention.”

The mission of the Hart Speech Foundation is to identify clients of all ages to ensure that no one is denied the opportunity to achieve more fluent speech. The board is made up of professionals from the legal field, design field, speech therapy and healthcare field as well as individuals with speech dysfluency.  The Hart Speech Foundation was founded by the Hart Family in 2011. Moo-ve to the head of the class. World Dairy Expo Raises a Glass to Crescent Ridge Dairy for the Best Milk in North America.

The World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin is the largest dairy focused trade show in the world. Since 1967, their Champion Dairy Product Contest has given dairy farms the opportunity to label their products the best in North America. This Year Crescent Ridge Dairy of Sharon, Massachusetts, took home four first place designations in the World Dairy Expo Championship’s 2019 Dairy Product Contest.

Crescent Ridge Dairy’s success at the World Dairy Expo Championship is just the latest chapter in the brand’s praise for their quality products. The Crescent Ridge Story

Malby and Mildred Parrish started Crescent Ridge in 1932 when they purchased the 44-acre plot farmland on Sharon’s historic Bay Road and made it suitable to grow crops and raise cows for milk. Back then, Malby was able to make his rounds delivering fresh dairy to the community with just one dependable 1928 Chevrolet truck. In less than 10 years, the operation had achieved enough success to justify the installation of a modern pasteurization and bottling plant. By 1953 Crescent Ridge controlled a fleet of milk trucks that served not only families in Sharon, but the neighboring towns of Canton, Stoughton, Norwood, Walpole and Westwood, Massachusetts as well.

Crescent Ridge opened their first Dairy Bar on their original plot of land in 1968. Its popularity has only grown since then, with the ice cream it serves winning the reputation of the best in New England amongst locals and seasoned travelers alike. Years later, National Geographic would name it one of The 10 Best Ice Creams in the World. This expansion and the loyal following Crescent Ridge had developed helped the brand weather the troubled economic climate of the 1970 and prosper into the 1980’s. South Shore Turkey Trot Registration Now Open. Annual Thanksgiving Day Race Benefits the Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield

Online registration is now open for the 5th Annual South Shore Turkey Trot road race, which will be held on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2019.

Gather friends, family and neighbors together to race in the South Shore Turkey Trot, a four-mile, family-friendly road race event with younger age categories, costumed runners, and team running. The race benefits the Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield, a youth development organization providing programs and services to children and families throughout the greater South Shore community.

Race mascot, Elvis Turkey, encourages organizations and groups from the community to form teams, create themes, and dress in costumes to celebrate the holiday.

The South Shore Turkey Trot start and finish line is at South River School, 59 Hatch Street, Marshfield, MA, 02050. Check-in begins at 6:30 a.m. and the race starts at 7:30 a.m. The four-mile course is flat and quiet through scenic back roads of Marshfield.

Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield employees will host a “Kid Zone” with activities to keep children entertained while parents run the race.

Free Pie for Race Finishers

Top Finishers will receive awards, which will be mailed out after the event. Every finisher of the race will receive a free apple pie provided by Roche Bros.

Canned Food Drive for the Marshfield Food Pantry

Runners and spectators are encouraged to bring a canned good on the day of the race for donation to the Marshfield Food Pantry.

“The race is a wonderful community event and proceeds from it will provide resources for Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield’s programs and scholarships,” said Jim Bunnell, CEO of Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield. “Our afterschool program and summer camp serves hundreds of working families from all across the South Shore.”

The number of participants in the South Shore Turkey Trot increases each year and last year there were more than 500 runners registered. The race, which is hosted by the Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield, draws runners from other states as well as from over 60 towns throughout Massachusetts. In 2018, more than $23K was raised to support Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield’s programming and scholarships.

Renegade Run Welcomes New England Team Mascots and Patriots Cheerleaders. Family-Friendly Race Supports Type 1 Diabetes Research and Cure

Renegade Run, the race that supports type 1 diabetes research and cure, welcomes special guest mascots of several New England sports teams as well as New England Patriots Cheerleaders.

Type One’s 8th Annual Renegade Run Obstacle Course Race will be held Sunday, October 20, 2019 at Bare Cove Park in Hingham. Fans of all ages will enjoy appearances by special guests: Blades the Bruin, the official mascot of the Boston Bruins; Wally, the official mascot of the Boston Red Sox; Baldwin the Eagle, mascot of Boston College; Sam the Minuteman, mascot of University of Massachusetts Amherst; and Pat Patriot, the official mascot of the New England Patriots, along with New England Patriots Cheerleaders.

The fun family-friendly race begins at 9:00 AM, is open to the public and features a course through four miles of paved trails and wooded terrain. The course offers more than 25 obstacles, including monkey bars to cross, walls and cargo nets to climb, and tunnels to crawl through. Event activities include a Mini Renegade Run for kids, cash prizes, live concert, food trucks, vendors, beer tent and entertaining surprises.

Funds raised will support Type One’s mission to raise funds and awareness for type 1 diabetes research at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). To date, Type One’s Annual Renegade Run has generated tens of thousands of dollars to support the Faustman Lab at MGH which is focused on discovering and developing new treatments for type 1 diabetes, a vaccine for the reversal of long-term type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune diseases.
 

In addition to supporting the Faustman Lab at MGH, Type One donation and fundraising platforms help provide scholarships to local children with type 1 diabetes to attend type 1 diabetes camp, as well as providing qualifying recipients with assistance for diabetes management and treatment.

Type One, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, recognizes a world free of type 1 diabetes (T1D) and is dedicated to that future by raising public awareness and funds toward a cure through research. Type One was founded in 2012 by a group of South Shore residents to support their friend Tyson Sunnerberg, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, when he was 21 years old. Behavioral Concepts Promotes Courtney Sherlock to Assistant Director of Specialty Early Intervention Services for the South Coast Region

Behavioral Concepts (BCI), a company of behavioral clinicians specializing in the care of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Massachusetts, has recently promoted Courtney Sherlock, M.S., BCBA, LABA to Assistant Director of Specialty Early Intervention Services for the South Coast Region. 

BCI is meeting the need for Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) providers in the South Coast area by providing specialty Early Intervention ABA services for children ages three and under in the greater Fall River and New Bedford area.

Courtney Sherlock, M.S., BCBA, LABA

In her new role, Sherlock will conduct Early Intervention intakes and assessments for client families with an autism diagnosis. She will also oversee case assignment of the region’s Behavior Analysts.

Sherlock, a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and a Licensed Applied Behavior Analyst (LABA) in the state of Massachusetts, provided specialty Early Intervention ABA services to children and families at BCI for five years before her promotion to Assistant Director. Her experience prior to BCI includes serving as a Lead Behavior Technician at Marlborough Public Schools in Marlborough, MA and as Direct Care Staff at the May Institute in Brockton, MA.

Sherlock holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Bridgewater State University and a Master’s degree in Applied Behavior Analysis from Northeastern University in Boston.

Each year, she volunteers for the 5K Run and Walk for Autism Acceptance at HMEA’s Autism Resource Central.

Sherlock is a resident of North Providence, RI.

Early Intervention Services

BCI’s Early Intervention services are designed to assist infants and toddlers (birth to age three) in making significant strides in their development, and are evidence-based, tailored to their needs, and usually provided in the home or day care center. BCI is a partner agency that receives Early Intervention referrals from the Department of Public Health for children under age three with a diagnosis Autism Spectrum Disorder. Old Colony Elder Services Teamed Up with Brockton Summer WAVE Program

Old Colony Elder Services, the non-profit agency proudly serving older adults and individuals with disabilities throughout greater Plymouth County, collaborated with volunteers from the Brockton Summer WAVE (Work, Achieve, Volunteer, Experience) Program on several outreach projects.

OCES teamed up with MassHire Greater Brockton YouthWorks (MassHireGBYW) Summer WAVE Program, which is managed by the MassHire Greater Brockton Workforce Board (MassHireGBWB). The Summer WAVE Volunteer Program provides an opportunity for youth who are 14 and 15 years old to volunteer and gain minor work experience on which to build. 

Honoring Troops – National Day of Service and Remembrance

In August, OCES hosted 26 WAVE volunteers at their Brockton office to continue the tradition of writing letters to the troops for National Day of Service and Remembrance. OCES partnered with the Operation Gratitude and WAVE volunteers to pen letters and draw or color pages that were sent out in care packages to Veterans and Active Duty Service Members.

“We express our gratitude and ongoing support for our troops through our letter-writing collaboration with WAVE student volunteers,” said Nicole Long, OCES’ CEO. “National Day of Service and Remembrance is an opportunity to honor and thank our troops who serve and protect us.”

Beautification Projects

OCES’ Volunteer Coordinator Courtney Krajeski, Martine Taylor, Director & Margaret Lynch, Volunteer Coordinator of South Shore Habitat for Humanity and Karen Rudd, Director of Bridgewater Housing Authority, led 30 WAVE volunteers in landscaping and grounds beautification projects at a South Shore Habitat for Humanity project in Weymouth, MA and at Bridgewater Housing Authority.

“We are delighted to work with YouthWorks Summer WAVE Program in providing volunteer opportunities for our community’s youth,” said Long.

The recently retired Jeffrey R. Robinson, Ph.D., the founder, former president and CEO of Behavioral Concepts (BCI), a company of behavioral clinicians specializing in the care of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) throughout Massachusetts, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award as well as a Longevity Award. Dr. Robinson is a resident of Mansfield, MA.

BCI, now part of the LEARN Behavioral family of companies – a national organization dedicated to helping all children succeed in school and life – recognized Dr. Robinson with two awards at their annual meeting: A Lifetime Achievement Award and a Longevity Award.

With 39 years of experience in the field of Autism Spectrum Disorder and a passion for special education services, Dr. Robinson is a visionary leader dedicated to best-practice Applied Behavior Analysis services.

BCI is a Massachusetts Department of Public Health approved provider of specialty ABA services for early intervention (infants and children up to three years of age), and also provides center, home-based, and afterschool services through private and public health insurance.

For more than 25 years, Dr. Robinson consulted with school districts throughout Central and Southeastern Massachusetts, most notably holding a contract with Worcester Public Schools from 1999 until 2014. He was the senior ABA consultant helping Worcester Public Schools to formally develop an autism program.

In his dedication to meeting the fast-growing demand for assessment, behavioral, consultative and educational services for children with ASD and their families throughout Massachusetts, Dr. Robinson addressed an industry-wide workforce shortage in board-certified clinicians. In 2014, Dr. Robinson struck a partnership between BCI and Bay Path University to create an onsite graduate program in Applied Behavior Analysis. BCI has had 25 graduates from this program partnership over the past two years. Last year, BCI struck a partnership with Assumption College in Worcester to provide an on-campus graduate program for staff looking for a more traditional graduate program experience. BCI employs, on average, more than 30 Assumption College alumni each year. As an additional incentive, BCI pays 60 percent of the tuition cost for employees. 
 

Dr. Robinson’s accomplishments and advancements in the special education sector reach beyond BCI. In 2014, Dr. Robinson co-founded the Center for Applied Behavioral Instruction (CABI) with Dr. Brian Doyle. CABI is a private, special education day school for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Behavioral Challenges. Students are referred to CABI from local school districts when they need more intensive educational and behavioral interventions. CABI serves students from more than 30 school districts and recently renovated their school space in anticipation of increased enrollment.

Over the years, Dr. Robinson’s work has been published in peer-reviewed journals and he has presented at conferences across the country. He earned his Ph.D. in special education from Boston College.

Most recently, Dr. Robinson was honored as the 2019 Large Business Leader of the Year by the Worcester Business Journal.

Dr. Robinson leaves quite a legacy in ensuring that specialized consultative and direct services for children diagnosed with autism are provided to hundreds of families in Massachusetts through BCI.
