Between Rounds Bakery Sandwich Café, the unique bakery café and bagel shop headquartered in South Windsor with locations in Manchester, Tolland and Vernon, CT, recently announced Melissa Smith has been appointed as full-time Baker for their Vernon Circle Shopping Center location.
Ms. Smith, who is a resident of Vernon, will be responsible for baking all the bagels, rolls, breads, pastries, and desserts.
Ms. Smith was the very first employee hired when the Between Rounds’ Vernon location opened in 1990. She joined the company as counter staff right after graduating from Rockville High School in Vernon and advanced to Manager at Between Rounds Manchester location until she left in 2012 for another company.
“When a full-time baking position was available at our Vernon location, Melissa applied and we quickly rehired her,” said Jerry Puiia, co-founder of Between Rounds. “Melissa is a talented baker and exemplary leader and we are so excited to have her back. It gives me great pride to say that our very first employee hired over 30 years ago still works for us.”
30-Year Anniversary
Last year, Between Rounds Vernon celebrated their 30th anniversary, and this year, the company celebrates 30 years in South Windsor. Between Rounds is the brainchild of brothers Jerry and Joseph Puiia, whose hallmark is manufacturing and selling their own bagels, which sets them apart from other cafés. The popularity of their bagels inspired the Puiias to strike up wholesale partnerships with grocery retailers and others, who then provide Between Rounds fresh baked bagels to their customers. Between Rounds is licensed to manufacture prepared foods, and wholesales their breakfast and lunch sandwiches to gas station convenience stores in Hartford County and beyond.
