The Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield needs volunteers at the event to act as characters such as elves and chefs. They also need all-around volunteers to commit to meetings and help with set up and clean up of the event. Volunteer elves must be 15+ years old and all other volunteers must be 18+ years old and submit to a CORI background check. Community service hours will be awarded to volunteers. Marshfield High School Girls Varsity Basketball and the Key Club are already on board to help out with the event.

The Boys and Girls Club has already sold 1,000 tickets and Train Ride 3 is close to being sold out. This event is sponsored by Tiny & Sons Glass, Rockland Trust and Vertex. All proceeds from the Polar Express event benefit the privately funded, non-profit the Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield.

“This should be a spectacular event, but we really need volunteers to successfully pull it off,” said the club’s Executive Director Greg Jackson. “We’re excited to have MHS Girl’s Basketball and the Key Club involved and certainly welcome other groups as well.”

The Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield will hold their second annual “Marshfield Polar Express” magical train ride event on Saturday, December 12, 2009! Tickets are $20 each and may be purchased online at http://www.marshfieldpolarexpress.com or at the Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield located at LibraryPlaza.

The Marshfield Polar Express magical train ride event will come to life on the Kingston commuter rail on December 12th. The train is scheduled for four one-hour train rides during the course of the day at 11:45 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7:10 p.m.

Kids are encouraged to wear their pajamas for the ride. All the children will give their Wish List to Santa and enjoy a story, hot chocolate & cookies. There will be much merriment and singing of Christmas Carols and every child will receive a special gift from Santa.

All proceeds from the Marshfield Polar Express event benefit the privately funded, non-profit the Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield. Last year, each train ride was nearly filled to capacity. More than $30,000 was raised to support the club’s programs and scholarships.

The Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield won a BusRadio.com contest (sponsored by Adidas) and received the prize of $300, which was used to purchase backpacks for their members, along with a free in-house performance by Bryant James.

More than 60 teen and tween club members enjoyed the Bryant James show last week.

“We were surprised and thrilled to win the contest and Bryant’s performance was amazing. He is a real inspiration to many kids,” explained Greg Jackson, Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club in Marshfield.

The Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield has been awarded a Carol M. White Physical Education Program grant of $374,000 from the U.S. Department of Education. The award, which will be distributed over the next three years, will fund a new physical education program and instruction on healthy eating and good nutrition. The U.S. Department of Education gave out $26.5 million in awards to more than 73 public schools and community-based organizations in 25 states to initiate, expand and improve physical education programs for students in grades K-12.

The Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield intends to use a portion of the grant in the purchase of interactive multi-media equipment that will be used to engage club members in specially designed activities that will advance their physical well being and teach them better nutritional habits.

The club will also look to collaborate with local schools in the development of various physical fitness programs.

“This grant provides us with a great opportunity to collaborate with the Marshfield Public School system and advance our mission. The Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield has been doing some amazing things over the past five years for members and being awarded this highly competitive grant is a terrific achievement,” explained Greg Jackson, Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club in Marshfield.

He continued, “While we take pause in celebrating the grant, we must remain focused on the Capital Campaign and other fundraising efforts to ensure a brighter future for the children of Marshfield.”

Camp Chuckles is a one-week workshop led by Chrissy Kelleher, a teacher and comedian who has opened shows for Kevin Nealon and Loretta LaRoche and also appeared on Nickelodeon’s America’s Funniest Mom. She is joined by fellow comedian and Milton High School Social Studies teacher and Drama Coach, Jimmy Bowes.

Kelleher and Bowes taught 15-year-old Max Clary at last year’s Camp Chuckles and he is now a regular performer at the Comedy Studio in Cambridge.

Camp Chuckles is geared towards middle and high school students and is a comedy writing and performing experience that uses improvisation and writing exercises to help kids turn their funny ideas into stories and jokes.

After the week-long session, attendees perform in front of family and friends in a Camp Chuckles graduation show.

Camp Chuckles will be held from July 20-24 and the cost is $120. The workshop for students entering grades 6-8 will be held from 5:30-7:00 p.m. and the workshop for students entering grades 9-12 will be held from 7:15-8:45 p.m. There is a maximum number of 12 students to each workshop.

The Boys and Girls Club’s exciting Annual Golf Tournament has drawn past participants such as the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals Sean Morey (who is a Marshfield native). Morey is both a recent Super Bowl champ and Pro Bowler. This year’s tournament is sponsored by Marshfield’s “Citizens of the Year” Jack and Beth Griffin of Buythecase.net (Pembroke) who will be playing in the tournament. Other “local celebs” playing include Selectman Michael Maresco, Police Chief Bill Sullivan, Fire Chief Kevin Robinson and Pat Roche, founder of Roche Bros. along with his sons.

Tickets are $150 per person or $600 for a foursome and are on sale now at the Boys and Girls Club in Library Plaza and online at www.marshfieldboysandgirlsclub.com. Registration may be done online or at the Boys and Girls Club. Every foursome receives free use of a golf cart, goody bags and a commemorative framed photo of themselves at the tournament.

All players will receive a box lunch. Golfers will be entertained by the “Village People” who will be selling raffle tickets to players. An awards dinner will be held at Crosswinds after the event and prizes will be given for “Closest to the Pin” and “Longest Drive”. There is also the possibility of winning a new car from Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac of Plymouth with a Hole-in-One. Restaurant gift certificates, golf items and sports memorabilia will be offered through a Silent Auction and raffles will held.

Molly, 18, who is a senior at Marshfield High School has been volunteering at the club three times a week for the past two years. In countless ways, she has made a difference in the lives of members and at the Boys and Girls Club. Molly has helped run the “Go Girl Go” program which helps girls build self-esteem. She has also been a part of the Keystone Club, a dynamic teen program that charters leadership and service to the club. She led club members in Triple Play, a wellness program of physical activity. After volunteering so much of her time, Molly recently became a Staff Member.

Although her commitment to the Boys and Girls Club has kept her busy, Molly was very involved in school activities. She was the captain of the Girls High School Varsity Soccer Team and previously, a guard on the Girls High School Varsity Basketball team. She was also involved in the Key Club at school. Her future plans include attending Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston and studying Interior Design.

Molly was honored with the Roche Family Outstanding Young Adult of the Year award in a ceremony at the recent Boys and Girls Club “An Evening of Stars” Gala and Auction where there were 350 in attendance and $60,000 was raised in support of the club’s programming.

“The Boys and Girls Club youth have truly benefited from Molly’s influence. She has amazing character and real leadership ability. We’re delighted that Molly has received the Roche Family Outstanding Young Adult of the Year award – it’s well deserved. $60,000 was raised in support of programming for more than 4,000 youths in Marshfield and surrounding towns at the recent Boys and Girls Club “An Evening of Stars” Gala and Auction held last week at the Indian Pond Country Club in Kingston.

350 people attended the event which was held at a new venue this year. Despite the economy, guests contributed heavily realizing the Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield is a great short and long term investment.

“We took a risk and broke tradition by replacing the venue and changing the date by six months and it was a great success! Our attendance was up by 25 percent; we raised more money than in previous years and our attendees were uniformly happy,” explained Dan Burke, President of the Boys and Girls Club Board of Directors.

He continued, “Everyone did an amazing job. The Boys and Girls Club gala and auction is all about great people supporting a great cause and doing it with all their heart and soul.”

A number of folks were honored during the evening for their dedication to and support of the Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield including: State Representative Frank Hynes and his wife Heather; Ed Perry, owner of WATD-FM radio station in Marshfield and Molly Newcomb of Marshfield (who was the recipient of the Roche Family Outstanding Young Adult of the Year Award).

Marshfield native Jonathan Hall, the Emmy award winning journalist and investigative reporter for WHDH Channel 7 News Boston was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening and caricatures were provided by Building 19’s Mat Brown and talented graphic designer Sue Petersen.

Event attendees enjoyed their five minutes of fame as they were “interviewed” by “Joan Rivers” and the “Blues Brothers” entertained the crowd after a live auction led by Paul Vercollone. Bruins tickets and a Mexican vacation were two “big ticket” items auctioned off at a total of $10,000.

The Friends of the Marshfield Airport, ACT Smart Inc., Sovereign Bank, Roche Bros., William Last & William Chase Builders, BuytheCase.net, Rockland Federal Credit Union, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts and Tufts Health Plan sponsored the event.

According to Greg Jackson, Executive Director of the club, “Nearly $60,000 was raised, which, in this current economy, and for a club our size is a tremendous accomplishment. We made lots of new friends who are interested in our mission and our future and seeing our club not only survive but also grow.”

The money raised will enable us to continue to offer great programs to our members.
